My dad was a "classic" Republican (fiscal responsibility, ethics, strong military) and gave regularly to the party. His breaking point was a request for money to build a statue of the late President Reagan, because modern folks didn't fully appreciate how great he was. As if a statue would somehow improve people's opinions of a former president.
