This is wicked! Just a word of caution with that soldering rework station as I own the same one, apparently the guard base around the metal piping is prone to melting at higher temperature so just be careful! Love your videos as always!! :)
That's really good to know, I have basically the same one too (different brand name from the one in the vid but otherwise identical, I assume just a case of same Chinese factory )
Theoretically it should be possible to design your own CPU that supports old Gameboy instructions but has more performance! Kinda like a true Super Gameboy which is 16-Bits (not the thing from the SNES but instead an upgrade from the original one like the Gameboy Advanced, that‘s 32-Bits)
Hey Elliot! I've been watching your channel since around 2017, and loved every minute of it. I'm a huge fan. This video was really cool, and in particular, one of my favorites of yours. To see you just doing a rought-cut, passion project like you often do in the style of your older videos brought me right back to the feeling I got when I originally started watching your videos. Thank you so much for five great years, and a I can't wait to see where you go from here.
I've always wanted to see someone turn a DMG into a handheld SGB. Get those special game-specific color pallettes and other goodies. Not sure if the borders can be turned off but install a supersized IPS screen and you're good to go.
If you do want those SGB boarders and stuff you can use Goomba Color to make Gameboy/Gameboy Color ROMS GBA Format with the SGB boarders and stuff. Then use the game in an Emulator or a Flash Cartridge.
I loved this video. Love the traditional TRF “do it because I can, not because it’s useful” type Mod here. With the amazing added artsy quality, one of your top videos for me for sure.
Actually it's useful, a couple days ago I just "burned" the button control of my Original DMG CPU... (The B Button and the DPad Left stopped to work properly), so the only way to correct that, its swapping the defective CPU with a good one... This method of taking the SGB CPU it's a cheaper solution for this kind of problem ;)
Dude this is sick. Now to do from GBAs and Pockets and the rest of whichever is compatible with each other. The edit is sick. The production value just ramped up. Plus holy crap that speed! Another awesome video!
Whoa. The editing makes it look like a short adventure film instead of a random modding video on youtube, even without a voice. Amazing work and editing, even with the music and text at the end! :)
Well congrats on getting a hot air station, I imagine some of your mods are going to get more adventurous now like having stereo speakers in your game boy
That's a misconception, as it's not the CPU that handles its own clock, but the clock generator on the board. On the Super Game Boy, the clock is generated by the SNES, and since there's no clean multiplier (or in this case, divider) between the SGB and the SNES, it uses 5 and it's "close enough, but not identical".
As the CPU’s run at the same speed and have the same pinout, you could theoretically just dump the NAND contents of the sgb cpu and write them to the original dmg cpu. This would eliminate the need of a donor and would still bypass the boot screen.
The two previous commenters are correct. The boot ROM is not stored in flash but in what's called mask ROM. Meaning, the ones and zeros are built into the chip design as physical wires to ground or +5V. You can even read out the boot ROM one bit a time if you decap the chip and look at it with a powerful microscope.
Thanks for the info guys! Should have done my research haha. No practical way to modify mask rom (other than using an FIB workstation but at that point the task becomes unrealistic). It would be cool to see an FPGA or 1:1 clone consoles that use the super Gameboy Rom instead of the Gameboy.
Yes! In fact, you'd get it twice, as you'd still have the Super Game Boy boot logo, and _then_ the Nintendo logo after. Actually, the Super Game Boy boot logo is the reason why the SGB CPU with the removed Nintendo logo exists.
@@doq No you wouldn't. I explained this in more detail under another comment that asked the same thing. But the short version is that the Gameboy CPU never sends commands to tell the SGB to wake up, so you get a black screen forever. The CPU still runs in the background, but can't output anything on the screen.
I like how with the High Quality screen even with limited framerate of the video you can notice it for frame shows the nintendo logo. The check is still being done for sake of authenticating the game, just shortened to frame or so.
I sometimes experienced very subtle frame drops when playing Super Mario Land 2 on my Game Boy. Especially when jumping when there's a lot of movable objects on the screen. It'll be so cool to see if this mod actually would fix this problem.
Damn, now everybody knows about it haha. I actually had an idea a few months ago to do "new" redesigned PCBs for the DMG with modern/smaller components and implementing the Super Famicom Super Gameboy CPU and SRAM ICs, since those SF SG are so cheap, and easy to harvest. I'll post them in the RFC group and Gameboy Modz group when completed. Sales for full drop-in replacement depends on sourcing of SF SG carts.
No idea how this came up on my topsite, but is awesome watching this stoned. Crazy mix between some music I can´t describe but it is cool and weird at the same time and the work you did in the video. This was a new expierince for me, very pleasant.
Thats actually amazing and the video production departure from the normal head talking vids was nice; elliot could be in a B&H commercial now lol "Is that a microscope?'
Love the track playing as you were taking the boards out of the dingy DMG. It had a Frankenstein feel, which was super appropriate and very compelling. A+ production value!
I loved the format of the video, very contrasting to what was actually happening. Very entertaining but I think you missed a big opportunity of putting a "it only takes you about a second to subscribe" at the end
It's all about the importance of that time. An afternoon that would have been wasted anyways vs. the most precious 2 seconds saved every single time you need to game.
ahahah. i love your humorous take on saving time with this video. I couldnt justify making a long-form video on this mod but you pulled it off quite well! Btw: i love your commentary uncovering fake repair videos. They make me lol every time. merry christmas -russ

Spends 3 hours to save a lifetime total of 20mins waiting for Nintendo logo
Hahahahahahaha
Hahahahahahaha
That is 20mins every tine he turns on the console vs 3hours of a single time. Suoer worth it if you ask me.
@@Ruiso7 Wot?
3 hours or 1895 game boots. If you actually play on that game boy, that will break even within a few years :D
So, what happens when you put the original Gameboy CPU in the Super Gameboy?
That's the one million dollars question
Supposedly, I think I’ve heard it would just crash but at the same time, I’m not sure I’ve seen anyone who’s actually done the swap that way
The real questions, asked.
Double Bootscreen! First the Super Game Boy Logo, Then Nintendo Logo like a normal GB
It won’t load because the SGB doesn’t know how to read it
what the hell was this
yo Elliott, make a 4DS with 4 screens (it's very unnecessary)
Damn, the change in the video production is dope. Nicely done. I hope you've reached at least half of the on/off cycles to start saving time :D

@@DoubbleDdragon oh yeah that would make it easier to mimic the instructions of an original gameboy
@@DoubbleDdragon I was going to say that.
I think somebody did that (kind of) for the NES.
Wouldn’t that make the games literally run faster, because of the higher clock?

It was. Dyalla did a really nice job.
Nice work on the editing 👍

I highly doubt a chip from that time is storing its boot in flash memory, it’s probably a rom, but I may be wrong.
it is definitely not NAND, if it was we would've seen mods regarding it a long time ago. It is 100% all in ROM
The two previous commenters are correct. The boot ROM is not stored in flash but in what's called mask ROM.
