- Real Life - Commando. This one-hour documentary follows a troop of Royal Marines recruits through some of the toughest military training in the world. Shows a less PC picture than 2003's 'Green Beret' and 2007's 'On The Front Line'. One scene cut out (naked bar) due to youtube TOS.

“Your mind is a weapon. It can beat heat, overcome hunger, eradicate pain, turn soft flesh into hard muscle. Want to know what it takes to earn the green beret? Start with what’s under it.”
Good advice not just for Royal Marines, but life in general.
I'm not sure that is always true. People are all different and one size doesn't fit all. Square pegs in round holes spring to mind. I certainly wouldn't want to don khaki and anyway, am too short and suffer from asthma. Although I was twenty nine at the time of this doc, I turned 52 two months ago. I dislike being shouted at, too!
THIS IS THE ONLY ACCURATE ONE I HAVE EVER SEEN. THIS IS EXACTLY AS ACCURATE AS COULD POSSIBLY BE MADE.
Have to agree. I joined the navy in 1998, spent lots of time with boot necks. Great lads, unbelievably tough as that’s not an understatement. Difference between the generation then and now - back then you just got on with it. No questions asked, instructors humiliated you, you either got on with or leave. No one made a fuss. Absolute generation of wankers these days.
@andrewcraine7555 Never been a bootneck but thinks he can slag off today's Royals 😂 craphat.
Sgt Thompson is sharp as a knife....proper old school
Proper old school indeed. Sgt Thomson joined at 16.
The officer here is extremely wise, debating that punishments for mistakes in stressful situations aren't always the correct way to go and i agree with him.
Brings back memories. We had Sgt Thomson on our Training Team when we went to CTCRM a few years later than this in 2002 as RMR recruits. Having recognised him from watching this programme before we joined, we were shitting it! 😆 To be fair he had mellowed somewhat, but needless to say we were still beasted to hell!!
In this course, you will experience pain. If you really want to pass, don't give up, no matter how much it hurts. Your muscles say "for facks shake, pleashe shtop! I can't take this shit any longa!"
But you have to resist the urge to give up and say: "NO! Fuck off body instincts! This shit is for both of us!"
this was more like it i passed out with 760 troop in 1999 and yes we loved a beasting Royal always
Sgt Thompson is a fucking legend.
It's the TV cameras that make the NCOs go easy on the recruits. I can assure you that when there are no cameras there the reality is a whole lot different!
that sergeant isn't that bad really he's educating the young lads.
We used to get a punch in the face, so I'd happily take what he's offering
@@fyaworxHow long ago was this
The most realistic depiction of CTCRM
4:10 Freddie Mercury's a real hardass
The most accurate documentary of RM Recruit training.
Do you know where this series is available?
@Documentary Detective II I meant officially.
@Documentary Detective II I know its old, that's why I was asking.
3:54 "Unbelievable" 😂😆
Sgt Thomson and Lt Col Lindley are such excellent examples of the archetypal NCO vs CO.
Your defintely right in saying that. Having said that, they go hand in hand. Training may never give you the experience of real combat, but your not likely to make it through combat without that training.
He says physical retribution is not helpful. The flank worked for me and I'll never forget it, 16 years later.
Royal Marines top lads ,one of the few British Units that truely deserve the "ELITE" tag
One of the few???
Nice video!
lol 'Don't break your legs!'
that sgt. is a badass
this documentary seems recent until you remember it is 12 years old :O!!!
@ninjakid6
former us army soldier here just want to point out we are not all idiots some of us are capable of respecting our allies and their soldiers who work just as hard for their country as we do for ours.
correctional PT i love that phrase:P
When you die on training,although very sad,there is a certain tough aura that surrounds a unit and recruits seem to flock to these units.
the dude with the mustache looks like captain price from modern warfare
I wish my moustache looked that epic when I grew one.
What you're seeing here is the tip of the iceberg, this is what they're prepared to show the camera and what has been allowed to be released. But think what service the training team are providing here, they're physically and mentally changing people and the way they live their lives and will forever live their lives.
yes it is
Lindley reminds me of Michael Mcintyre for some reason.
I think they our both very professional soldiers, in my experience i know of top USMC guys failing RM courses and i'm sure vice versa. at the end of the day they both do the same job to the best of there ability.
@moorevayne quite alot of the troops get backtrooped, i know that on commando on the front line, 9 out of the 50 passed out as originals, where as 25 from the original troop eventually passed out, some were injured and some just needed more instruction at various tasks and were backtroopered
Both the Royal Marines Commando's and the 75th Ranger Btn are elite light infantry units with specialised and intense training. Both are used extensively in support of main special forces units in cordon and dedicated QRF roles. It would be more accurate to compare Rangers to UK Special Forces Support Group. RM's have a tradition of being employed in maritime operations whereas Rangers don't have that history or link as they are an Army unit not Naval. They are not an easy comparison, I agree.
The Royal Marines have an outstanding reputation, and it is not a bad thing that their training is harsh, physically and mentally demanding. When the chips are down in small unit tactics with relatively light weapons, the only thing that you have to rely upon is your training and your comrades.
@TheAngelofvengance nice one mate ;)
Semper Fi !
@crouchtrac thanks for agreeing.
Sometimes it scares me that they are just giving a personality to a bunch of kids that don't have them. Molding them into overly militaristic and harsh human beings.Yet I think I still think such heavy training is necessary. Its truly an achievement to become a Royal Marine.
@TheNobby1991 i do too but this training did even get my blood simmering. And to top that they had such little recruits to start with because it was so "tough." I wouldnt mess with ANY Marine whether they be US, Royal, Korean, ect. And they must be doing something right. They help us in the battlefield.
Army beasting........ unpleasant, hard etc, I've had it.
Royal Marines beasting........ savage, just the way it should be.
@Dogmeat1950
Kingfisher Battle near Con Thien - In 1967, "Operation Kingfisher" was launched to destroy NVA forces just south of the DMZ. On Sept. 21st, the 2nd battalion, 4th Marines began a "search and destroy" mission and quickly encountered the entrenched 90th NVA regiment. After a day-long battle, the Marines had suffered at least 16 dead and 118 wounded while trying to break out of the enemy's kill zone. The battalion withdrew at dusk, 15 dead Marines were left behind.
I'm joining the royal marines next year :) cant fucking wait !!! Wish me luck nd good luck to anyone else who is looking forward to a future career in the military :)
Did you join up ?
Well ?
What are you doing now?
@UnitedProviences by the way if "beastings" mean beatings, ya, you get those too in bootcamp, the DI's aren't suppose to hit you, but they do on a regular basis anyway
there all marines and great fighters
Love that post we can't do it all by our self we need our Allies !!!
Damn. I can't imagine how many "beastings" I'd go through if I were in this training.
im in the middle of training for the PRMC and i put myself through lots of pain in my runs by doin a sprint for about 200m after a 4 and a half mile run, aswell as pain in upper body strenght but although i do that its nothing when i get to the stage these guys are at, its always gunna hurt
how did it go mate?
@UnitedProviences exactly, your racing the clock
Its funny when they fall over :) "Get up you lunatic... Don't break your legs"
considering i am joining the army i will learn these lessons at there expense
@UnitedProviences by the way the whole point of USMC bootcamp is one big "beasting", and its hopefully the point of any military's training
8:50 Problem? Problem? Problem? Haha, class.
I thought that too haha
@guy42294 yeah but you have to be in the UK for around 5-7 years Good Luck!
hey so... can I just say we are friends we work together and both organisations' exemplary combat record is second to none. I love my pals in the RMC we trained at 29 palms cali. and I wish them all the best when they return to Plymouth England. But it is comparing Shock troop assault Marines (USMC) to Surgical strike commando the only real similarities are we are usually both delivered from the sea. We owe each other pints so it really doesn't matter friends to the end
It's kind of weird to think some of these guys could be in the SAS or SBS now
@TheGunner1324 They fought until they ran out of ammo, they didn't surrender by choice but were forced into it.
I don't know if this has aready been said but Royal marines training is adleast as hard as SEAL training. and the sergent really looks the part.
First Norway trip I did in 1993, four people tragically died.
We were on the same Norway, were you 45 too?
WO2 AF died in 'my' BV (I was on Recce Troop) and he'd booted the Signaller out a hour or so before and then jumped in.
We were up on the hill at the Tyin Hotel too when the other lads bought it. I tip my hat to them each time I go to the NMA.
@ECCappo At 1:47 it says "every fortnight..." so every two weeks.
Nothing like a good old fucking beasting
Royal Marines=Quality over quantity. These blokes are commandos with the toughest non-SF training in the world. If they were American they would be called SF
It is a training and SELECTION process. If you are not tough enough, it is not where you need to be! Part of that team took me through training… it was hard, very hard, but fair and done for a reason. Do the country a favour and leave things as they are regarding the Royal Marines.
@tcrock89 im just saying! longer training does not always mean better soldier/troop. if thats what your hinting at...
boy in the back: "SWEET JESUS, GET ME OUT OF HERE!!!!"
@UnitedProviences there two different races, ya the crucible is kinda a race i guess, but their two different races that you cant compare. Its like comparing push-ups and sit-ups, their just two different things with two completely different objectives. but then ok, we'll drop this point.
Could you elaborate the PT requirements? are you talking about initial PT testing? during training?
well when you run your core temperature getts realy high...if you push it too far you get a stroke
If you noticed Commando is a very Commonwealth term. The Americans don't use it. What they do is they call everyone non-conventional unit Special Forces but little known to most people is that there is a division, Tier 1 and Tier 2. Tier 1 SF is the real deal like Delta Force and Navy SEALs. Tier 2 is Green Berets, Rangers, etc., all the light infantry like the Paras, Royal Marines and former British Dominion Commandos.
Problem?
@EllisFitz1995 Good luck mate! yeah after my A-levels im applying, ive neen training for this since as long as i can remember, best wishes to you!
How did it go?
start training 6th of june, going to be mega
@thegreenishcrab ofc it doesn't but look how the units handle in reality, the USMC make a lot of unproffesional mistakes (all make mistakes ofc) because of their sheer numbers in comparison. tcrock89 is quite right, in his statement
No pain No Gain
Train Hard Fight Easy
"Attention to Detail Counts"
Its too Easy to Give up ....Take one more step Walk more Mile Run Ten Miles Yomp 30 Miles ...Easy
If what you are Taught is Easy, What you are Taught Saves your Life , Simle and Never Give Up
You can do anything if you Want To TO get the Green Beret one Day at Time and give 110%
@sevenoneight7
This film was made in 1999 so perhaps it has changed since then...
It hasn't from my experience. This is how it is still
The swedish coast ranger training is 14 months with this kind of training.
besides the SAS, these guys make the best ground forces
I said 'up to a point'. The US Army Rangers (along with Belgian, French and Dutch special forces) were heavily influenced the British Commandos of WW2, who in turn became the SAS, SBS, Parachute Regiment and Royal Marine Commandos of today (40, 42 and 45 Commando are the surviving units).
Problem...? Problem...? Problem...? Haha
when the instructer or teacher recieves his new batch they keep them tight for 1 or 2 days
"Problem?" lmao
in all honesty this isnt that bad not the training cuz i bet its hard as fuck but the instructor yelling. It honestly wasnt bad he wasnt belittling them he wasnt screaming at the top of his lungs he is just trying to instill some pride in taking care of your shit. he gets props from this US soldier
Tough or not the USMC is still is a force that strikes fear into people.
30 weeks wow
Im going to become an RCM in a year and a half.
aye true
Correct Dave
I cracked up at this post,and found it hard to believe.
What 's next hang on lads the RSM is on his way to tuck you in.
I guess this was pre PRMC and in my day it was 39 weeks ah so long ago
@Hardmetal1993 and your saying the RMC doesnt?
@Bravospaz thats not all that happens and you know it.
@Sturmmann No the reason why you get all the hot areas in afganistan is because you have 90,000 + troops there while we have 9500 so it makes more sense for you to take over the hot areas due to you having more troops deployed there, also look up royal marine torture training and the so called pain barrier, Im joining the royal marines this year as a officer and i know for a fact the american marines are no match for royal marines i have friends in the UMSC and they agree.
Nice posters on the walls...
@crouchtrac good, that was my goal the whole time.
@delta0one no but im gonna top myself if you two carry on!
only a handful of these 50 odd recruits made it...but does that mean the rest FAILED or just got backtracked and eventually passed?
@fslzzz no 1999-2000 actually
@ShadowCrashed81 thats good.
I was talking about USMC not RMC. it was a reply to another comment about how USMC are better than RMC
i have nothing but the utmost respect for RMC and i have a friend whos joining after he goes through uni to be an officer.
it was youtube not putting my previous comment where it was supposed to go.
a tad of missunderstanding lol
@superhornet69
A march in the RMC is a yomp Oppo. but I get your point
Tab is Para slang
Happy Crimbo
I was a sniper in the U.S.M.C., though i never had the honor of training with any Royal Marines, i did run into a fire team of the crazy fuckers at a bar in jacksonville florida. Being a Marine myself, just sharing the name is an honor, but drinking with the these dudes was a fucking blast. No different from American Marines, and just as fuckin hard. Two other Marines and I sat with these guys, shared stories, laughed our asses off and drank ourselfs stupid. Much respect to my brothers in arms.
whats the music at the start all about haha
@UnitedProviences it does work, look. 8 hours as opposed to 72 hours are two COMPLETELY DIFFERENT time frames. you have to admit. your comparing two completely different things as far training goes. 30 miles in 8 hours is a race to beat the clock, the crucible isn't a race to beat the clock. they have things like that in USMC bootcamp, but those two things aren't even comparable because they have two totally different objectives
@EllisFitz1995 Me too, just got to finish exams :D
@RAZGRIZ3391 you mean the people with nappies on?
i wanna Be like A Marine Commmando but i cant Coz M a Nepalese Boy. Anyways A Great Saalut To U allz Royal Marines Commando.
