Growing in Devotion - Day 01/03 - Talk in English by Swami Aparajitananda, Chinmaya mission Chicago.
"No God, no Peace. Know God, Know peace.
Swamiji in very simple terms define word Bhakti for us as “Bhakti is the emotion or feeling of love directed towards God, also known as divine love.”
Few of the question which Swamiji answers for the seekers are:
· How does divine love differ from worldly love?
· What benefits can be derived from divine love?
· What is the purpose of cultivating this divine love?
While answering the last two questions, Swamiji quotes from various Bhakti texts, the first being the most important Bhakti text-
1. Nārada Bhakti Sūtra. Wherein Nārada ji says
यल्लब्ध्वा पुमान् सिद्धो भवति ।
अमृतो भवति, तृप्तो भवति ॥
yallabdhvā pumān siddho bhavati,
amṛto bhavati, tṛpto bhavati.
Swamiji beautifully expounds this verse to makes us understand the benefits of cultivating divine love.
2. Swamiji then quotes a verse from another famous Bhakti text, Mukundamala, in which the Lord's devotee, Kulashekhara Alwar, says, 'Oh Lord, I am not praying to you for any worldly things, nor for my Prarabdha Karma to be wiped off. Whatever is there in my Prarabdha, let it come. The purpose of my prayer is that I request you to ensure that my heart is ever filled with devotion unto your lotus feet. Then even if I am in hell, my heart, which is filled with your devotion, will experience only bliss.”
3. All saints have asked the Lord only and exclusively for unwavering devotion at the feet of their beloved Lord. The reason is that when you ask for devotion, the Lord gives you everything else for free. Buy one get all free.
4. He also quotes verses from the Gītā, highlighting how the Lord himself has glorified devotion in every chapter.
Unwavering Devotion
This divine love has to be unwavering. Swamiji tells us what does unwavering devotion means and provides us with various test to determine whether our devotion is wavering or unwavering.
· If mind is disturbed there is lack of faith/surrender/devotion
· Japa needs to be done with surrender, faith and devotion. When Japa is done consciously the mind has to experience the peace.
· Surrender unto the Lord and disturbance cannot coexist.
· Unwavering devotion unto God and miseries/anxieties cannot coexist.
· He also narrates a beautiful story from the Ramayana wherein Lord Ram Himself tells Hanuman, "Hanuman, know for sure that a person who has surrendered unto Me by thought, word, and deed can never experience sorrow or misery. It is just not possible."
· When calamities strike, if your mind is disturbed, then your devotion is not strong, and you have a long way to go on the path of Devotion.
· When you are physically sick and your devotion is not helping you, understand that you have a long way to go on the path of devotion.
He also provides us the insight into functionality of our mechanical mind and conscious mind.
Swamiji then quotes a story from Śrīmad Bhāgavatam in which bhīṣma Pitamaha 's unwavering devotion towards Bhagavān is revealed. bhīṣma Pitamaha is a devotee of the Lord who gave advice to the suffering Yudhishthira from his deathbed of piercing arrows. He displayed such unwavering devotion that on that deathbed, he was able to praise the Lord by composing and chanting the famous Viṣṇusahasranāma.
What is the goal of human life and what is the greatest achievement of human life?
To answer this question Swamiji chants verse from Gītā and Śrīmad Bhāgavatam and also narrates stories from Śrīmad Bhāgavatam
Now the question is how to achieve this unwavering devotion to the Lord?
To answer this question Swamiji is asking us to learn lessons from infants. In summary the lessons that can be learned from the infants are
There is pain and suffering in life.
I can overcome this pain and suffering.
I, by myself, cannot overcome this pain and suffering.
Only with the help of someone can I overcome this pain and suffering.
Unless I seek help, I will not receive it. I may need to cry, scream, and attract attention to get the help I need
