    everyone is equal.so she should get the chief position by her efforts, not her skin color.(if she was not a black,she cant get that position only by her technology.she is the first chief that cant do fouettes smoothly. ) This is the true inequity .
    yes,her story is a dream which push us to achieve our goals. but this dream will be more inspiring if she can do as well as other chief

    As a former, professional ballet dancer (who also had the same "issues" as Ms. Copeland), to those who say she looks "bulky," I say it just isn't so. She is a shorter lady and when you are "our height," be it male or female, people always jump to that conclusion if you are not waif thin. It's not that taller ballerinas dont have the muscle tone, it's simply spread out over a longer body. I say bravo to her for not feeding into the idea that because I'm short, I have to be super thin. Having danced this pas de deux hundreds of times, I can tell you that IT IS the guy that makes her look less graceful. As the male in the partnership, it's our job to not only connect with our partner artistically, but also make sure she is seen in the best light technically. This guy just dialed this performance in.

    I feel like I need to pre-empt this by saying I am a POC because that's apparently an important caveat nowadays.
    Nobody is saying she's performing poorly because of her race though. People are saying she's not a great dancer technique wise, which compared to the Russians (or even the British, imo) are severely lacking. I would hope people understood that before jumping into conclusions.
    I think her story's inspiring, but nothing more. I've tried searching for more of her performances but haven't seen enough to pass a judgement. Maybe this wasn't her best performance. Or maybe she's better in person. But this is clearly not a good performance, race or not.

      Maybe you can answer the questions which apparently, Stock Starter could not: WHO IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE CHOREOGRAPHY? IS THERE OR IS THERE NOT SOMEONE WHO CAN SAY IN REHEARSAL THAT THIS OR THAT PASSAGE IS NOT DONE WELL? AND WHY, EXACTLY, WAS HE REFERRING TO THIS AS THE CHOCOLATE NUTCRACKER? I would be ever so grateful to get an answer to these questions from someone who DOES appear to understand the world of ballet.

She doesn't fit the mold of what most whites think a black person should be. They feel she's living out of her station and yet they won't say it because they don't want to admit the obvious! Let's face it, ballet has been dominated by men and women of non pigmented skin, and here comes the second African-American woman to become a principal dancer and it's a problem. just saying...

      Jeremy Jones well I think if a black dancer IS very talented he/she shouldn’t be turned away. And individuals vary much more than between races. Misty COULD have been a very good dancer, she really could. She’s very pretty and generally speaking shorter, more petite dancers are perceived as light on their feet and graceful, and also supposedly they have some benefits with being quick with jumps faster with spins etc, for example think Danil Simkin, Mihail barashnykov etc. So she really could’ve been great. Too bad she’s not.
      However I do agree with the sentiment of why black people would care so much about ballet. There are so many different types of dances and sports that black people would excel at and be more interested in doing anyways. It’s just such a non consequential thing to dwell on. And I’ve also so far seeing no evidence that they are really being turned away because they are black etc. just seems to me the more plausible explanation is black people by n large just don’t give a shit about ballet. I’ve lived in a predominantly black neighborhood with a prestigious ballet company and I’ve never seen heard or known a black person who cares about ballet. And they love to dance, but pop dance, break dance, R&B dance etc. Most of them think ballet is silly and stupid and uncool. So why not leave them be? I think once again it’s all a status thing. I’m not hearing activists like Misty caring about black dancers in less prestigious ballet companies than ABT. Just seems to me that because ABT is considered the top three in the world, that’s why she made a big deal of it. SJWs are always this way, not actually caring about the actual discipline and where it’s going in terms of talents but prestigiousness.

    The promotion of Misty Copeland to principal was straight up racist. It was saying to the the many, many, young black ballerinas who DO have the technical abilities to perform classical choreography "we're going to lower the bar for you. So that you can be included." It’s an insult. It's also an insult of colorism- no one serms to point out that Misty is so light-skinned that she can almost "pass" for white on stage, while far more competent ballerinas, like michaela Deprince, who have been paased over in America, have darker skin and more typically "African" features. This is why America can't produce great artists anymore.

    I don't think the ppl saying she doesn't have the physique are upset because she is a woman of color. it's true most ballerinas are rail thin. she is curvy. however I prefer her body over the rail thin ballerinas. she looks fit, not sick. it's a shame ballerinas are expected to have no curves or fat. They usually look anorexic. I like her though, she looks nice and healthy. I think she dances beautiful.

    • @alecsia96
      @alecsia96 8 лет назад +15

      When people (who have at least a minimum knowledge of ballet) say she doesn't have the right physique, they are refering to her total lack of en dehors, to her flat feet, to her short limbs, not to her boobs, butt, thighs or whatever you might be refering to when calling her "curvy". Just because she doesn't have these characteristics naturally doesn't mean she couldn't develop them though. Ballet world is full of examples of ballerinas who don't have the "right physique" but were/are able to create an illusion out of their real proportions. Evgenia Obraztsova for instance, is extremely short, yet she looks so long and ethereal on stage because she really worked hard on it. Personally i find it kinda offensive when people totally dismiss what "physique" means in terms of ballet technique. This lady here has a sculptural body yes, i wish i had her boobs, thighs and butt yes, but it doesn't make her a ballerina.

    • @paulinecrawfordvilleneuve2077

      +alecsia96 Misty Copeland does not lack "en dehors" (turnout), have flat feet, or short limbs. And if she did, it would not be anything she, or anyone else, could change. What she does have is a wonderful physique for classical ballet, artistry, a capacity for hard work, and the ability to tune out racists while she is dancing.

    • @alecsia96
      @alecsia96 8 лет назад +13

      "Wonderful physique for classical ballet". Cough cough. Sweetheart, i have absolutely nothing against people who like Copeland as a classical dancer, i don't care whether they have the slightest clue about ballet or not, even those who dare to even compare her to Osipova. I guess you aren't too familiar with non-American classical ballet. Or perhaps you're confunding ballet with, i dunno, hip hop or street dance? Sadly, Copeland lacks the essential grace of a ballerina, her moves are heavy, and her arms are what disturbs me the most. Yes, she lacks en dehors, she has flat feet, and her limbs are short. You see, nor you, nor me could change that, even if you keep on repeating to yourself the exact opposite. I do not question her capacity for hard work nor am i a "racist", if that's what you're trying to imply. For instance, Precious Adams is a much prettier classical ballerina, she is beautifully graceful and has a soft, delicate acting quality. Poor Misty didn't decide the body she wanted to possess before she came to this world, hence my original comment.

    It's just so sad when the body can't go along with the will of the heart/soul. When i was young and still in ballet I had a classmate who was BLIND. Copeland happens to be gross, ungraceful, heavy in her movements, lacks en dehors, has weak feet, ugly lines. Not bad for someone who started at 13, but not worthy of the position she owns. What intrigues me is how could she possibly become a principal in the same company that holds Polina Semionova in the exact same rank. It seems that in America nowadays all you need in order to rise in your career is to belong to a minority. Media, sponsors and the little precious help of Money (maybe? Who knows?) do the other half part of the job. However, unfair promotions are becoming a tradition not only in American companies but also in the Mariinsky, Paris Opera and Bolshoi, to name only a few. Sad, but true.

If you want to familiarize yourself with ballet technique and never did any dancing, just watch some videos of Katherine Morgan, a former soloist of nyc ballet. And please can someone explain what happened to the choreography? And the weird mime going on. Anyway, too much posing and unfortunately not good ballet.

Rudolf Nureyev considered Bruhn to be the finest male dancer in the world in the late 50s-mid-60s. Yet Rud often commented in Class that his hero often performed steps in a non-Russian manner.

      It’s not so simple. There are ballet techniques and conformities that Russian schools tend to lean towards, but there are also other techniques and conformities that STILL, the best dancers of them tend to be Russian. Because ballet is simply a Russian tradition. It’s like for the longest time gymnastics was a Romanian tradition, ping pong is still a Chinese tradition, street R&B dancing is an African American tradition etc etc. so many more dancing talents go into ballet in Russia. Natalia Osipova for example does not dance in a Russian tradition way. She talked about how she was quite rebellious and wanted to do things her way and didn’t like ballet as a result of her being such a tomboy growing up. But her talent was just too apparent so they still kept working with her and eventually developed what SHE was good at. And she became famous overnight. Russians are not so closed minded as you think. It’s about the frequency of talents much more so than just ethnicity.

I thought this was school theater presentation or something. I guess if you sell a sob story you can go places. The Russians, I believe can't quite do that even when *hundreds of white Russian girl's dreams are chattered every year when they are told they don't have the proper body for ballet...* With the exception of gaining popularity before graduation because of a documentary and then the Mariinsky milks your anorexia story to make money (if you know who I am talking about).

I'm here because some idiot said she was better than Osipova.) As for diversity... the only thing people can do about this is introduce ballet to minorities everywhere and train them under the best schools to create quality ballerinas. You can't just have anyone in a top company because black or Asian or whatever. It is not honest and real. It is a lie to please PC stupidity.

    I feel that if she had worn a dress instead of a tutu it would have flattered the style cherography better. For example, during the drags and the cradles, that would have looked more romantic and it would as a whole make more since to have her in a dress. I think the style of cherography doesn't necessarily look the best with the classical tutu. Although, it is a very beautiful costume!

      Oh I know that piece is typically performed in a classical tutu. I performed Sugar Plum for my Ballet School's Nutcracker the last 2 years. All I am saying, is that the cherography by itself in my opinion would be more complimented with a romantic dress style of costume. I think if you decided to go with such untraditional cherography for this iconic part then why not go ahead and choose an untraditional costume for her that would compliment the dance.

    I would love to see her have the opportunity to dance with Sergei Poulin or Carlos Acosta,these are giants and i am willing to bet, it would be glorious, i hope they both see this, they seem like the gentlemen who would be happy to dance with her, that is all she would need.

      dream on. She's not a great ballerina I don't care what color she is and if I were her I'd take this video off and dump it. What an embarrassment.

      They wouldn’t dance with the likes of her. I feel sorry for any male dancer who gets stuck with Misty.

    Извините, но по мне это просто корова. Кто восхищается Мисти, тот вообще никогда не видел балет. Где воздушность, где легкость,где линии,где графичность?? Ребята, это не балет. Наверное в современном танце она хороша, но в классическом...извините.
