This is my favorite piece by Misty so I'm a little surprised to see how many people don't like this. You need to understand that 1) this is not a classical ballet piece so stop looking for classical ballet elements like dainty gracefulness and a fairytale story 2) the story here is Misty being at the mercy of the violinist, which is why she shows so much "exhaustion" in her moves and gives these looks of desperation at the violinist hoping that he stops only to play the music even more intricately each time. And every time the music starts again she's equally as powerful and alert, like the music is forcing her to dance against her will despite her exhaustion. Reminds me of Ella Enchanted, if she were a dancer 😀

To all of you who are saying this is "boring" or "gibberish" you obviously have no appreciation for art, and this is a modern ballet, not your typical ballet. It's not supposed to conform to the same standards as classical ballet, though you can obviously see ballet technique with modern elements. Go educate yourself about the different types of dance there is, and maybe you'll learn to appreciate abstract art. Not all dance needs a "story" Sometimes exploration of music and movement is enough to create art. So go do yourself a favor and educate yourself instead of assuming it's gibberish, or better yet, if you don't appreciate it stick to your classical ballet. This was beautiful and Misty is a FANTASTIC performer who, you can see connects with the music and the audience.

Almost 40 years your senior, I was dissuaded as a young person of color. I always cried as I watched any ballet. Now I don't have to cry any anymore. You made it happen for all of us Black girls who were told no, and made it easier for those talents who come after you. I am happy for you Misty. I am glad I got to see you as a principal ballerina for ABT before my days end on this earth. You are a brilliant talent!

For those saying that it is gibberish, you are demanding too much. Stories shouldn't be searched for, they should be listened to. If you paid attention you'd see the obvious interaction between the soloist and the violinist and between the soloist and the music itself - the angular shape of the moves and motif of Misty losing her balances is so obviously a response to the dissonant sound of brief modulation to a foreign key in the music. This is only the tip of the ice-berg. Just because she's not dancing a fairytale doesn't mean that the dance can't be narrative.

I've been a fan of Misty for some time, because of what she stands for. I love ballet and have grown up in the art community with all it's diversity. And I understand what the choreographers doing in this piece, but I don't think this is a strong performance by Misty. Because the piece is about interacting with music and the musician, it's painful to watch how poorly she does it.

Actually, I see this piece as being all about the technical skills ... there are so many little things that are done exceptionally well throughout this piece. It seamlessly melds classical ballet with modern movement while providing moments of comic relief, again, all while demonstrating her strength, extension, precision and speed. She can ask her body to do anything ... and it responds like no other! Also keep in mind, Misty is the dancer, not the choreographer.

Yeah you definitely can. Thing with pointe is, people tend to believe getting on pointe is the HARD part, just hoping into them one does from the end of the very first year of training (of the 8 or 9 years a professional dance career takes), the hardest thing for a classical dancer to learn is proper placement, alignment, at the beginning grades, and then on the higher grades the dancing parts and the "tricks". But definitely, as one friend told me once "dance is a personal journey, so as dance gives to YOU very specific things, YOU also give to dance things that no-one else is able to give". So go dance girl.

I equate this piece to a relationship between a man and a woman.
You have to visually lose sight of the physical presence of Misty & the violinist but pay attention to the relationship between the music & the dance itself.
If you notice when the violinist softens the music how Misty's dance becomes more desperate for the attention and love from the music (the violinist) & when the music heightens how joyous her dance is.
Remember just because you can't interpret the piece doesn't mean it's a bad piece.
