  • The best way to learn about a country is to spend time with the locals & this weekend I learned A LOT about the German culture! In this video I (Tanner) take you along on a 3 day adventure with Germans! There's a lot of hiking, great food, a sauna experience, and also my first time trying German Beer! Did I survive or thrive on this weekend with 4 Germans?

    Hahaha love the video :D Like a Discovery Chanel documentary "Germans in their habitat" PS: Funny that you mention the thing with pictures or videos. I actually try to avoid being in pictures that get posted online by friends myself :D I dont even know why. Radler is a great isotonic drink after hiking especially if it is without alcohol. PS: The Therme in Bayreuth, Weißenstadt or in Obernsees are pretty close to where you live. They have saunas and a big spa area with massages you can get and whatever to relax. Especially in Winter it is amazing to relax and warm up. Also going into cold water outside then after the sauna is great for your health

    It's great that you're so willing to embrace the German culture and amusing to note the differences. Germans are reluctant to have their photos published but very relaxed to go naked into a mixed sauna, yet Americans are embarrassed eating with a knife and fork.

  • @JakobFischer60
    @JakobFischer60 2 года назад +15

    Ah, the food cutting thing. In Germany we only cut all the meat before eating for very small kids, like age 4 or 5. So if an American does it, it looks really funny to us.

    • @rolfgarske8174
      @rolfgarske8174 2 года назад

      Cutting all the meat into small pieces increases the surface area and allows the meat to cool down to room temperature much faster. I prefer to eat my meat while it is still warm, not burning hot but a nice temperature, ideally about the same temperature as the side dishes, except for salads, which I expect to be at room temperature or colder. And also the beer should be colder than room temperature, always drink it while it’s fresh and cold.

    • @annabelv.2400

    I really like your videos. The music is great. There are two things, most Germans dislike: getting filmed and getting caught making errors while talking English. I appreciate your friendliness and calm open mindedness. Your videos about Germany are true lessons about the typical American way of being nice. You seem to be interested in outdoor activities. There is a hiking trail from castle to castle along the Rhine river. The most beautiful German landscape in Germany probably is the “sächsische Schweiz” (Saxonian Switzerland, Germans have named all beautiful landscapes in their country the “so-and-so Switzerland”), a breathtaking “Death valley with trees” in a pocket. One last remark: Driving on the Autobahn is very popular among tourists, yet the ultimate challenge is driving a lap on the Nürburgring race track. There are two tracks, and the old (northern) track is open to the public (you need a ticket). I wonder why no American expat has discovered this. Check out the German / European videos. Best wishes to you and your beautiful wife and kid

    Great video, nice footage as usual. But I especially love the fact that the group decided to stick to German language for the most part and pull your out of your comfort zone that way. Being forced somehow to try your best to be involved at the end helps alot in learning and gaining new experiences. All these little things help to broaden your horizon. Like the expecience you got in the restaurant for dinner - which is usually a "culture shock" when experienced the first time - in Germany its a real event, not just about eating, but time to relax, taking the time, chat about everything in your mind. I hope next time Risa will have the chance to get some of those experiences too, while you're taking care of Willa. Maybe with a group of other local women or mixed party, who knows?

    You went a really long way for this hike (and it seems you got lucky with the weather) ! The Eifel used to be one of the poorest areas of Germany, and some of this history remains visible until today, for example in the large swathes of land that were deforested in the Middle Ages becuase the wood was used for heating and glass production. Sauerbraten made from deer is a really unusual variation.

    Aaaawww, you saying goodbye to Marissa and Willa made me a bit sad.
    But the rest of the video: awesome insights, as well as just sights. Thanks for showing me parts of my own country I've never hiked through.
    The "hier ruhen Soldaten" phrase is similar to "here rest the soldiers" you might hear on American veteran graveyards. Both are very similar in phrasing, more in the idea of allowing the soldiers to rest from their pain and suffering and tribulations, instead of saying something more mundane like "here lie" or "burried here are...". Good that you picked up on that distinction yourself.
    In the Eifel region, when you see a lake with small areas where bubbles rise through the water, please, please, please, DON'T bend down to look closer, and don't stay in that area for long. That is either a sulfuric gas spout (easily detectable by its foul smell), dangerous in and of itsself, but not close to as dangerous as the other gas.
    The other gas is a very high concentration of CO2 or even CO. Both are without any taste or smell, both are heavier than standard air. Thus they collect on the top of the water and in the dip of the brush around the water. If you bend down you are suddenly immersed in a CO2 bubble that can very very quickly incapacitate you (within a few seconds, if you take one or two breaths there). You will drop unconscious nearly instantly, without any warning. But as you are so close to water, you will usually drop into the water and drown.
    So, please, be really careful at such spots. Those are not something to triffle (Eifel) with.
    The German sauna experience is derived from the Finnish sauna. Most Scandinavian countries are at least as relaxed when it comes to nudity as most Germans are. So many Germans regularly go to a sauna to improve their health and vitality. It strengthens your immune system by forcing it out of its comfort zone and make it work to keep your blood pressure as well temperature well in your body tolerance. The quick return to standard or even below normal temperatures make your skin much more responsive to outside stimuli. That people are nude in the sauna is just so normal that nobody cares about it at all.
    Also, the body positivity is great. Because when do you get the chance to see and watch other nude bodies without being branded a pervert or ashamed of yourself other than at a sauna or a nude beach? Here you can see all the different body types. You suddenly notice that not even the supposedly perfect bodies of the beautiful are actually perfect. Everybody (every body?!?) has something that doesn't fit the beauty standards. You see tall, short, fat, thin, wrinkly, smooth, saggy, taught, young, old, male, female, and every possible combination of these. What it does is liberate you from your media induced standards of beauty; it opens your eyes to a much broader sense of what is not only acceptable, but what beauty really is. Acceptance of that relieves you of so much pent up stress about your own body. This is far more important than even the actual physical health aspects of the sauna.

They start very early in age (2) and are accompanied by a parent! You pay a fee for the entire family and you can attend any and several sports! It is so much fun for everybody! That would be a great option for you all! Or the Volkshochschule (VHS) what is offering courses!
      Sometimes churches have groups for little kids and a parent before they attend Kindergarten with 3 or 4 years of age!
      Everybody speaks a bit of English and slowly but surely your German will improve, too! Your daughter will catch it even earlier! We went through all of those things by moving constantly with our kids and lived for a while in Bavaria!
      Good luck!

      Great suggestings, Elke. Strongly suggest churches for making new friends, especially as a believer. You'll have a German family in no time.

    Living in German culture when you're 60 😂. We also have cities and clubs and fun. You just go for the traditional things. It would be like if I would go the US only to Texas and most time only to rural areas. And not every German goes to the sauna, I have never been to a sauna at the age of 35. Go to Köln, Düsseldorf, Bonn. Its not far from where you are. I would even show you arround.

    Just for information: If you see Sauerbraten on the menu of a restaurant, it´s made with beef and not horsemeat nowadays! You would actively have to search for a place, that would still make it with horsemeat. I doubt, that you would find many those in Germany.

    14:20....but are you making a note these words and phrases in your vocab book??? Excellent ratio 4:1 for this given scenario. If you have an opportunity to meet with this group again, then take it. From a language learning aspect, this group could push you forward. It could do some quick fire questions, talk to you about the past, present and future all with the context of your hike. You could learn such a m a s s i v e amount of phrases and general vocabulary in such a short space of time. This, I believe, would be a catalyst for further and wider progress with the language. I really hope you are afforded the opportunity to meet again and experience this super intensive language emersion course!! You'd benefit so much, you really would!!!

      I've added a lot of words and phrases, but I didn't catch all of them. I tried to enjoy being with them in the moment rather than make it all about me learning German. It was an incredible time and I even noticed I was thinking in German (with what little words and phrases I had learned) once I returned home from the trip.
      As far as future trips, we will see! I hope I'll be invited, but either way, it was a great trip!

    if you are interested in history you should take a look at the topic "Hürtgenwald"...
    one of the heaviest battles of World War II that took place in this region
    Nice video btw

      Hürtgenwald is also called meat grinder. But there was room for humanity as a medic negotiated a nightly break in fighting to recover the wounded people from the forest. That impressed me very much..
