I just moved to Latvia a week ago. I'm from Finland but I've lived in Krakow for the past 5½ years so it's kind of continuation for my Eastern European Tour (queue all the Polish people getting triggered by being called "Eastern European"). It's nice to see some other foreigners enjoying their time in Latvia making me feel like I made good choice. My experience is that the loudest critics of Latvia are the Latvians themselves. While somehow still being really patriotic and proud of their country, it's kind of weird, really. Everyone kept asking me if I'm nervous of moving and I kept telling them that it's my Latvian girlfriend who seems to be more nervous about it. But at least my first week has been great, just reaaaaally shitty weather. Here's hoping for another nice summer like last year. :)
You're from Finland and complaining about cold or bad weather ?🤔, And yeah Latvia is former eastern European politically but geographically it's northern Europe.

So, regarding the reason Americans don't know about Latvia, here's my theory: After the second World War, the leaders of England, America, and Russia got together in Yalta, and divided up the planet. Russia had control over Greece, and America couldn't leave the origin of Democracy in Communist hands, so they traded the Baltics for Greece, as they didn't see any monetary value from our countries, even though we wanted to be free democracies. I believe this shame is why they never speak about us, or ridicule us in popular culture (Latka Gravas, in the tv show Taxi).
I'm russian living in latvia. I personally think that one of the biggest advantages of latvia is that latvian people know so many languages. I live in riga and I've been studying english since first grade. And we also have "additional language lessons" in school. Usually it's german or french. But still because of latvia being a part of soviet union in the past a lot of people know russian. So in total we can speak at least four languages. And I love it sooo much!
Nice video, try and learn Latvian, at least the basics anyway, forget Russian, English is slowly thankfully taking over Russian as the other main language , keep promoting that. Also if you visit Latvia be sure to explore other places, cities and towns other than Riga.
So about prices it is cheap unless you actually are from Latvia cuz payment is low.. And we are patriots of our country its perfect but we hate our government cuz its f...ing our lives making us want to leave asap..
I’ve heard there is a lot of mix feelings when it comes to politics since there seems to be politicians that seem to be in favor of Russia instead of the well being of Latvia. Politics get really tricky, but I believe I understand where you are coming from!
Every politician says good and friendly things like pay raise and lower taxes before election and then they get elected and forget all the bullshit they said..
Everita Ozoliņa it’s terrible. It really shouldn’t be allowed. I don’t know why they allow these politians to promise such false things and then break their word after the people that believed in them got them to where they need to be!
@@BrianVelez The only politics in favour of Russia are the Russians living in Latvia parties, there's no way in a million years you will get a true Latvian political party supporting the Kremlin, it's worth knowing the history. Regardless, politicians in general need to serve the people.
Alu has good food and the atmosphere is amazing, but when I went there they had a D.J. blasting pop music at insane volumes so I left after a short time. I couldn't have a conversation. I don't really like Riga compared to Tallinn or Prague or anywhere in Poland really. The food and beer are good, I will give you that. Tokyo City made me very sick and had me puking my guts out for 2 days. Buying sushi in Eastern Europe - not smart. Frankly, if not for my Latvian wife I'd probably never go to Latvia again. Glad you like it, but Tallinn is objectively better than Riga in basically every way. Poland is objectively better than Latvia in every way.

You are so pretty that you really don't need any make-up
I'm russian living in latvia. And I love it sooo much!
gr33ntea that’s actually pretty accurate! Most Latvians are trilingual which makes it very welcoming for foreigners!
I hope you know how to speak Latvian.
You can talk latvian?
Baiba Miķe I try and make a fool out of myself but I’ve noticed some people laugh or smile and it always warms up our conversations! 😆
I just know greetings right now and find that for now it's best communicating in English for the same reasoning as Brian.
@@BrianVelez At least you are trying 👍
Nice video. Like no manis
Paldies!
Bus cost like 5:00€
Nice video, try and learn Latvian, at least the basics anyway, forget Russian, English is slowly thankfully taking over Russian as the other main language , keep promoting that. Also if you visit Latvia be sure to explore other places, cities and towns other than Riga.
Yeah!
But the problem is China is going to be our english in some years later.
It won't be soon, but who knows.
Im from latvija
Čau

Latvija ir skaista valsts
I also enjoy Tallinn and Krakow!
Ok, do how is Tallinn and Poland ' better ' , explain in more detail.
