it's touching to see people talk so lovingly about this little land of mine. about the latvian patriotism thing - we are usually 'quiet patriots', comparing to americans, who i think are loud patriots. on Lāčplēša day we light torches and walk through towns with them (its organised, not random) and from day to day we silently and sincerely love our country. although we get loud when someone is belittling us.
this video made my quiet patriot very content and happy.

It was so cool being able to hang out and see another American that has been so exposed to the Latvian culture and hear about your experience! Thank you very much for being so kind and giving me such amazing advice! Hope we get to work on future projects together 🙌🏼

I just moved to Latvia a week ago. I'm from Finland but I've lived in Krakow for the past 5½ years so it's kind of continuation for my Eastern European Tour (queue all the Polish people getting triggered by being called "Eastern European"). It's nice to see some other foreigners enjoying their time in Latvia making me feel like I made good choice. My experience is that the loudest critics of Latvia are the Latvians themselves. While somehow still being really patriotic and proud of their country, it's kind of weird, really. Everyone kept asking me if I'm nervous of moving and I kept telling them that it's my Latvian girlfriend who seems to be more nervous about it. But at least my first week has been great, just reaaaaally shitty weather. Here's hoping for another nice summer like last year. :)

Love Valmiera so very pretty, and there is a bistro called Bastions we ate at frequently. We are going again this year. If we take the car like we did last year we will stock up again at SuperAlko in Ainaži.

@@hoosier-veganguy6038 Stereotypes are there for a reason and it doesn't mean that they're not true or are bad. We are shown that side of Americans yet we do understand that if we'd visit American, we could see that if it's probably not true. Same as people who come to Baltics used to have a stereotype that they're coming to a dangerous, unfriendly place where no one smiles and hates foreigners. Somehow they've proved that it's not true and is a false stereotype. America and Latvia has two different cultures and basically stereotypes come naturally.

Saule Cloud No problem. The stereotype used to be that we were all fat and stupid so I guess fake smile and happy is actually a step up, lol. Although they have got their own languages, but it's easier for them to communicate in russian. It's been like that since soviet times (1945-1991). Well we learn english from first grade so that's why mostly everyone speaks english and in fifth grade we have to choose another language russian or german (atleast in my school, in other schools there can be french, lithuanian and other languages) some students even learn forth language I'm trying to learn korean later i will be learning chinese but my friends spanish and swedish so we have pretty good language knowledge, some pepole might think we are a bit old fashioned but mostly that's not true we always know the latest trends I'm speaking about people under 30, after 30 people dosen't care about it too much but even my 10 year old sister knows the fashion, music and food trends (probably because of me) So i live in Riga and i have seen almost all of your videos you always film the old town and central Riga i would recommend you to explore Ķengarags you don't have too much to do there but the younger generation lives there because there is a lot of schools, on the streets you could probably see a lot of students listening to billboard top 40 or talking about some American/British/Korean celebrities of course there's a lot of old people too but you get it :)) Well however keep going, your videos are great!!!♡

Well also Latvia is currently nationalistic to some degree because of it's history, it got screwed over by so many foreign powers in the past, how can you blame them ?

Also when it gets warmer, you should visit Latvian Ethnographic Open-Air Museum and have you been to the zoo?

So, regarding the reason Americans don't know about Latvia, here's my theory: After the second World War, the leaders of England, America, and Russia got together in Yalta, and divided up the planet. Russia had control over Greece, and America couldn't leave the origin of Democracy in Communist hands, so they traded the Baltics for Greece, as they didn't see any monetary value from our countries, even though we wanted to be free democracies. I believe this shame is why they never speak about us, or ridicule us in popular culture (Latka Gravas, in the tv show Taxi).

I'm russian living in latvia. I personally think that one of the biggest advantages of latvia is that latvian people know so many languages. I live in riga and I've been studying english since first grade. And we also have "additional language lessons" in school. Usually it's german or french. But still because of latvia being a part of soviet union in the past a lot of people know russian. So in total we can speak at least four languages. And I love it sooo much!

@@BrianVelez The only politics in favour of Russia are the Russians living in Latvia parties, there's no way in a million years you will get a true Latvian political party supporting the Kremlin, it's worth knowing the history. Regardless, politicians in general need to serve the people.

Alu has good food and the atmosphere is amazing, but when I went there they had a D.J. blasting pop music at insane volumes so I left after a short time. I couldn't have a conversation. I don't really like Riga compared to Tallinn or Prague or anywhere in Poland really. The food and beer are good, I will give you that. Tokyo City made me very sick and had me puking my guts out for 2 days. Buying sushi in Eastern Europe - not smart. Frankly, if not for my Latvian wife I'd probably never go to Latvia again.
Glad you like it, but Tallinn is objectively better than Riga in basically every way. Poland is objectively better than Latvia in every way.
