Joe, your list was great. Glad to see you acknowledge albums that were important in their day and representative of the year, and not just going record store nerd. Hats off to you for that. I can't wait to see what you guys have for 1990-94, that was my era having been 17-21 at the time. I know everyone feels that the music that came out when they were that age is noteworthy, but I'd say 1990-1994 is the best 5 year run since 1969-1973. Don't let me down, guys!!

I turned 21 in the summer of 1989, and I saw two epic, day-long concerts at Giants Stadium: - The Cure/Love and Rockets/Pixies, and - New Order/Public Image Ltd/Sugarcubes. It was a great summer
The year of my birth just happens to have five of my all time favorite records. 5. The Blue Nile - Hats 4. Fugazi - 13 Songs 3. Galaxie 500 - On Fire 2. Pixies - Doolittle 1. The Cure - Disintegration
An interesting year where not many great albums were released. On the plus side, every great album was a classic - my five are Tom Petty - Full Moon Fever - a joy to listen to from start to finish Van Morrison - Avalon Sunset - some of the most beautiful music he ever recorded, from Orangefield, to Coney Island and I’m Tired Joey Boy Pixies - Doolittle - the future of rock music in this awesome blast - Monkey Gone To Heaven, Debaser, Here Comes Your Man, Gouge Away The Stone Roses - The Stone Roses - the beginning of Madchester, She Bangs The Drum, i wanna Be Adored, Waterfall Neil Young - Freedom - Rockin’ In The Free World, Eldorado, Don’t Cry, Crime In The City Just missing out is Aerosmith Pump, I preferred their previous album Permanent Vacation but they were a fantastic rock band during this period, Kate Bush - The Sensual World - the title song is one of her very best releases, both asa song and the sound of it. Lou Reed - New York - a great return to form, Lou has a lot to say and says it brilliantly. Bob Dylan - Oh Mercy - a wonderful record, great songs, superb sound on this record
I still can't believe Bob Dylan decided not to put "Series of Dreams" on Oh Mercy. It's still one of his most underrated albums, but that song would have taken it to a whole other level.

@@dancurtin9362 I've never been able to get in to Tin Machine even though I'm a big David Bowie fan. I just don't find the songs memorable. Might be a "too many cooks in the kitchen" type situation.
My third favorite Bowie album is Scary Monsters (after Diamond Dogs and Hunky Dory); it was the first one i owned, when it came out, and the first one i heard all the way through, many times, on the walkman knock-off my dad got me, and Tin Machine reminds me of that. Never really heard the second album, or the live one... (btw #4 Aladdin Sane and #5 Ziggy Stardust...i would rate Heroes and Low higher if it weren't for their second sides, which are okay...Station to Station in their somewhere with those two...and Heathen would be in my top ten...
i'll have to give it another go...it's not on amazon prime, but probably youtube...initially i liked Earthling, wasn't sure, but i didn't listen to it much again...and somehow it had escaped me until recently that Gabrels was the guitarist in Tin Machine...!

Elvis Presley envied his voice, Bob Dylan admired his songwriting) EDIT: Not a deep year for 5-star classics but there's a lot of good "second-teir" albums.
Agree with the majority of your picks, but strongly disagree with the last part. Easily a top 3 year of the 80’s for me. Close call between 84, 87, and 89 for the best. -Jason
@@TastesLikeMusic I'm not sayin there weren't good albums, it just wasn't a very deep year for truly great albums, in my view. Basically, everything on my list after Pretty Hate Machine would have no chance of making my top 10 in any other year of the '80s (except maybe '81.)
@@AbbeyRoadkill1, I would agree. For my musical tastes, 1989 was well behind many of the other years that decade. I know there’s a lot of love for Bleach, but that’s an album that wouldn’t scratch a top 100 for me most years of the 80s......

I think that's 4 commenters now who have Full Moon Fever in the #1 position. As much love some of the other albums from this year I was compelled to pick the Tom Petty record. All killer, no filler. Every song is great.
Pretty good year. Not quite to 1987 level but still excellent. Apologies to The Cure, Madonna, and even Motley Crue (my sister's favorite band at the time was Motley Crue and this I think is by far their best album) 5. The Real Thing (Edge of the World) - Faith No More - Another one that is an influence from my sister. I was surprised to see this one on the list. 4. Full Moon Fever (Runnin' Down a Dream) - Tom Petty I don't love this album through and through, but what I do love. I really really love. Some of the best songs of Petty's entire career. 3. Doolittle (Wave of Mutilation) - Pixies - The Pixies masterpiece. Where as I only like a few songs from their other albums. This one is packed full of great songs. You could practically do a greatest hits and just re-release Doolittle. 2. Pretty Hate Machine (Down in It) - Nine Inch Nails - although my top three feel more like 90s albums than 80s. This one feels the most ahead of it's time. No weak tracks here, every song is good. 1. The Stone Roses (I am the Resurrection) - The Stone Roses - My second favorite album of the decade (amusingly to another Roses band GN'R) No album has blown me away on the first listen as much this album. Most great albums take a few listens, but not this one. The sound of the album was so unique and spellbinding on the first listen. Only song on here I don't care for is "Don't Stop" The American version of this album is better because it includes "Elephant Stone" and "Fools Gold" I also truly think Reni is one of the most underrated drummers. Too bad they were never ever this good again. We of course got a Todd Rundgren reference so everybody take a drink. :)

Green on Red in the #2 spot again! I listened to it a couple times last night, and again this morning, and I dont think I'm as fond of it as their album from last year. But I'll keep spinning it to see if it grows on me.
@@AbbeyRoadkill1 I consider Here Come the Snakes (very close to a five-star-album) much better than This Time Around as well. But with 1989 being a slightly weaker album year than 1988 it still makes my number 2. I still like it a lot though, it’s sort of the second great Stones album that year (only reason why Steel Wheels isn’t in my top ten is because I still don’t own it on CD or LP, so it doesn’t count yet).
1. The Stone Roses - The Stone Roses 2. Pixies - Doolittle 3. The Cure - Disintegration 4. New Order - Technique 5. The Replacements - Don't Tell a Soul
5. "Nick Of Time" by Bonnie Raitt 4. "Blaze Of Glory" by Joe Jackson 3. "Flowers In The Dirt" by Paul McCartney 2. "Oranges & Lemons" by XTC 1. "Full Moon Fever" by Tom Petty
My original #2 + #3 were albums that do not comply with the rules: Burning Spear - Live in Paris (aka Zenith 88) (a live record, a hypnotic shamanic celebration of the man in the hills) Wire - On Returning (a compilation of their first three albums condensed to one CD, it adds its own sense and progression to the material) Five Honourable Mentions - Tracy Chapman - Crossroads, Pixies - Doolittle, Fugazi - 13 Songs, Lou Reed - New York, Kirsty MacColl - Kite 5. Laurie Anderson - Strange Angels (Her hard core fans were shocked when the avantgarde artist - wife of Lou Reed, who also made a strong album this year - started to sing to what she might have intended as pop tunes. But it works perfectly and produces the Joni Mitchell album that Joni attempted in her later years but always failed to achieve. I admire her other albums as well but this accessible song album works astonishing well without losing any of the wit and lyrics she has been known for before and after.) 4. Dion (diMucci) - Yo Frankie (His great hits were golden oldies already when I first heard them on the radio in the mid 60s "Runaround Sue", "The Wanderer", "A Teenager in Love". He was a star way before the Beatles even started. Dion survived when he did not get on the fatal plane with Buddy Holly when they toured together. He never quit music and made folk and rock albums all the time, none were great sellers. In 1989 he was introduced to the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame by Lou Reed and he released this wonderful album. Dave Edmunds produced it, Paul Simon, Bruce Springsteen and Lou Reed sang backup vocals for the guy who influenced them all. Anyone who liked the Traveling Wilburys in 88 will love this little gem as well.) 3. Lounge Lizards - Voice of Chunk (Before discussion arises, the cover clearly states that some tunes were recorded in Jan 89 despite wiki erroneously saying this is an 1988 album. John Lurie's best thanks to Evan Lurie on piano and Marc Ribot on guitar, but also thanks to the rest of the tight band and thanks to his own focused compositions. Sadly it was their last release - the 1998 return was the Lurie brothers with all new musicians using the old name.) 2. Mekons - The Mekons Rock 'n' Roll (Their 8th album in a decade is as much Rock and Roll as Fear and Whiskey was folk or Honky Tonkin' was country, it is pure Mekons. The anarchic blend of Folk, Punk, Rock, Country that made them the true heirs of the Clash breeds one great song after the other. One of their best albums - that means something as they have a very strong discography which may have sold 10.000 albums worldwide by now...) 1. Neil Young - Freedom (Neil's 80s output was a series of experiments that worked in parts but more often did not work, interesting at times but rarely great. It was maybe a necessary part for his career but maybe not for every listener. Lucky Thirteen is a compilation that sums up the period nicely for all those who think they do not need the individual albums. But in 1989 he was back in form and made his statement and his announcement that he would be a force to be reckoned with in the decades still ahead.)
@@markgatica12 No live albums, no compilations - rules? well, a kind of agreement since the series started. The guys made an extra video for live albums in the 70s - I expect they do the same for the 80s...
@@paulsimister944 agree with that, she's in my list too. She's in many of my favorite songs, Fairytale of New York (Pogues), Nothing but Flowers (Talking Heads), Sexuality (Billy Bragg) Ask Me (The Smiths)...
I like avant-garde jazz a good bit so I'll be enjoying that Voice of Chunk. Wasn't aware of it before. Have you ever heard of a band called Critters Buggin? en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Critters_Buggin Eclectic band with a heavy jazz influence... from my hometown, Seattle. I don't think any of their albums are gonna make my top 5 but I've seen them live a couple times and was impressed.

Hi Fran. Great list as always. Got about 5-6 same picks. Doolittle was almost #1 but edged out by J&MC this year. Not familiar w The Wonder Stuff. I thought it was a fairly strong year. Some heavy industrial sounds.
More than half of that list were also among my candidates - even if there are also odd choices (for my taste), like Spike...as much as I value Costello, it is not for that album. Also, Full Moon Fever is not the Petty I like, really almost a pop album. As always, just choosing 5 is REALLY hard.
@@roxannewalsh hey Roxanne, good to hear. Yes, neither Spike nor Full Moon Fever are among my favorite records by Elvis and Tom, but they have a bunch of great songs, and Costello 's an amazing production. Maybe more a pop guy than you are. Squeeze it to 5 is just impossible for me, I would be always leaving aside albums I love. They just don't deserve it, they gave me so much joy...Take care, looking forward to your next posts, always very interesting.

1. I *love* so many Rush albums so completely, yet I could never get that into PRESTO.. i don't know why, it kinda freaks me out cause i love 80s Rush 2. THE STONE ROSES was a game-changer, just a remarkably unique and enjoyable sound and collection of creativity. but there were two other even bigger "game-changers" in 89 for me.. 3. I agree 100% with Jason's assessment of Pixies DOOLITTLE, one of my all-time favorite albums. Just genius stuff, a weird and wonderful reinvention of the pop/rock concept imo... when it came out, i couldn't get enough of it.. it felt like if it was The Last Rock Album Ever Made, that that would be just beautifully perfect and appropriate.. 4. And another insane game-changer was Beastie Boys PAUL'S BOUTIQUE, the deservedly acclaimed, astonishing 2nd BB record... That they followed L2iLL with this is STILL mind-blowing over 20 years later. Paul's Boutique ftw. 🎶🔥👍
1. Pretty Hate Machine - Nine Inch Nails 2. Doolittle - The Pixies 3. Paul's Boutique - Beastie Boys 4. Rhythm Nation 1814 - Janet Jackson 5. New York - Lou Reed
My top 10 (not a big standout year to me, but still some heavy hitters): 1. Savatage- Gutter ballet 2. Voivod- Nothingface 3. Marillion- Seasons end 4. Anderson Bruford Wakeman Howe- Self titled 5. Joe Satriani- Flying in a blue dream 6. Testament- Practice what you preach 7. The stone roses- Self titled 8. Queen- The miracle 9. Overkill- The years of decay 10. Morbid angel- Altars of madness
Another fine Scottish band Del Amitri's "Waking Hours" was a classic collection imo. I originally bought it on vinyl back in the day. Full of well crafted songs like Kiss This Thing Goodbye, Stone Cold Sober, Move Away Jimmy Blue and the biggest hit off the album Nothing Ever Happens.
1. Wrong - NoMeansNo 2. Bucketfulls of Sickness and Horror In an Otherwise Meaningless Life - Alice Donut 3. Rock n Roll - Mekons 4. The Real Thing - Faith No More 5. Floating Into the Night - Julee Cruise 6. Paul's Boutique - Beastie Boys 7. Beneath The Remains - Sepultura 8. Bleach - Nirvana 9. Doolittle - Pixies 10. Stone Roses - Stone Roses Close calls for Bad Religion, Neil Young, De La Soul, Morbid Angel, Operation Ivy, Godflesh, Coroner, Kreator, Terrorizer, Lou Reed, Bitch Magnet, Tom Petty. Really great year for me.
@@paulh6673 I had them at #4 in 1985 behind 3. Ronald Shannon Jackson & the Decoding Society - Decode Yourself 2. Jeffrey Lee Pierce - Wildweed 1. Pogues - Rum Sodomy & the Lash But that is just me... Mekons definitely will appear in my lists in years to come yet, but no spoiler today. They have a quite large discography as they became a long running band and the number of really great albums they made is astonishing. And even their lesser ones contain a number of memorable songs.
This is a time when I started having to search for music I really liked. As noted by my top two choices that have been completely forgotten. MTV and the radio stopped matching my tastes more and more. 1) Last of the Runaways - Giant 2) I Am I - Nuclear Valdez 3) Full Moon Fever - Tom Petty 4) The Seeds Of Love - Tears For Fears 5) Oranges And Lemons - XTC 6) Journeyman - Eric Clapton 7) Extreme - Extreme 8) Save Yourself - McAuley Schenker Group 9) Dr. Feelgood - Motley Crüe 10) Hear & Now - Billy Squier
My Top 5: 1. THE CURE - Disintegration 2. FAITH NO MORE - The Real Thing 3. THE CULT - Sonic Temple 4. ROY ORBISON - Mystery Girl 5. CHRIS REA - The Road To Hell Greetings from Canary Islands
Tough year, good lists... Nice to see McCartney's FITD get a nod... Disintegration would top my list...but it would barely edge out Bob Moulds magnificent Workbook...
1. Soundgarden - Louder Than Love 2. Lenny Kravitz - Let Love Rule 3. The Stone Roses - The Stone Roses 4. Nirvana - Bleach 5. Simple Minds - Street Fighting Years
5. Badlands 4. Wake me When It's Over - Faster Pussycat 3. Louder Than Love - Soundgarden 2. Conspiracy - King Diamond 1. The Real Thing - Faith No More
Obviously no hate from me Joe, based on my list compared to yours. Although I must admit, when I flash back I was still mostly still listening to Appetite for Destruction in 1989... 5) Pump- Aerosmith 4) Nick of Time- Bonnie Raitt 3) Heart Shaped World- Chris Isaak 2) Blue Earth- The Jayhawks 1) Full Moon Fever- Tom Petty Honorable Mention: The End Of The Innocence- Don Henley; West Textures- Robert Earl Keen; The Great Radio Controversy- Tesla; Freedom- Neil Young
Deacon Blue's 2nd offering "When The World Knows Your Name" had some great tracks like Queen of The New Year, Real Gone Kid and Fergus Sings The Blues.
1989 is a GREAT year. The top 4 are landmark albums. Each is unique and groundbreaking in their own way. 1. Doolittle-Pixies (#3 on my list of My 25 Favorite Albums of the 80’s) 2. I think the biggest part of it is that their musical tastes are quite different from each other. If they all liked the same thing it wouldn't be nearly as interesting.
Here’s my Top 5: 1 - Pixies - Doolittle 2 - The Cure - Disintegration 3 - The Stone Roses - The Stone Roses 4 - De La Soul - 3 Feet High and Rising 5 - Spacemen 3 - Playing with Fire
@@TastesLikeMusic I’m feeling great thanks! I was born in 1982, so I remember all of the nineties. This decade was the soundtrack to my youth, so I’m going to enjoy going down Memory Lane 👍🏻👍🏻
Ah the year I started as a paper boy so 89 includes a favourite sentimental choice as my 10 year old me loved this on my Walkman at the time (my no.5) 5 a new flame Simply Red 4 Desintigration The Cure 3 Dolittle Pixies 2 Bleach Nirvana (still my joint favourite album though I like the Outcesticide LP aa much) 1 Beneath The Remains (has become m favourite by Sepultura.....so great) Special mentions.. . Mystery Girl Orbison and Raw Like Sushi Nenah Cherry and lastly the album that introduced me and helped me learn off by heart the lyrics of lots of 50s 60s and 70s classics...Jive Bunny by Jive Bunny and the Mastermixers....😶
You're the first person to have Bleach in the top 5. It's in my top 10 because I love the first half of that album. But I think the second half is kinda "meh," which is what kept it out of my top 5.
Ah well that's because I loved it so much back in the day and this record influenced me more than Nirvana's other records and for me it's their best still....the one I can listen to all way through....so easy pick for me
1. Disintegration - The Cure 2. Doolittle - Pixies 3. Freedom - Neil Young 4. Love and Rockets - Love and Rockets 5. Deep - Peter Murphy 6. Tin Machine - Tin Machine 7. Oranges & Lemons - XTC 8. Paul's Boutique - Beastie Boys 9. No Control - Bad Religion 10. The Sensual World - Kate Bush
and i guess now i have to insert Cloudland by Pere Ubu at #6, and Warren Zevon's Transverse City at #7, so Tin Machine #8, Oranges & Lemons #9 and then No Control #10
Cure - Disintegration Tom Petty - Full Moon Fever The Beautiful South - Welcome To The Beautiful South Del Amitrti - Waking Hours Ian McCulloch - Candleland Erasure - Wild Chris Isaak - Heart Shaped World
Pixies - Doolittle Lou Reed - New York XTC - Oranges & Lemons De La Soul - 3 Feet High and Rising Beastie Boys - Paul's Boutique Mudhoney - Mudhoney Nirvana - Bleach Bonus: Fine Young Cannibals - The Raw & the Cooked
Despite this being an exceptional year for music, coming up with a top five wasn't very hard. The fact that four of the albums are true giants was a big help, meaning the list pretty much wrote itself, and the only difficulty was coming up with a number five. First I'd like to mention Heart of Uncle by 3 Mustaphas! 3 and Workbook by Bob Mould as notable releases. Vying for number five were Doolittle by the Pixies (possibly their best album), Magnum Cum Louder by Hoodoo Gurus (definitely their best album) and Cosmic Thing by the B 52s. I'm going with the latter, mainly because of how impressed I am by the band's ability to reinvent themselves as commercial songwriters while still maintaining their trademark quirkiness. Plus, Roam has to be one of the greatest hit singles of all time; I still have fond memories of eagerly hitting the dance floor anytime it was played. Now, here we go into the land of the "giants." Number four, Freedom by Neil Young, his comeback album (which, unfortunately, proved to be pretty short-lived). It has everything you could ask for in a Neil Young record, lovely folk (Hangin' On a Limb), hard rock (Rockin' in the Free World), edgier numbers like Don't Cry and Crime in the City, as well as the more eccentric Someday and On Broadway. Number three, Blaze of Glory by Joe Jackson. Jackson's albums are usually pretty uniform in terms of style, but my two favorites by him, this one and Big World, are also his most diverse. This one is a concept album where the tracks all run into each other to avoid singling out specific songs or skipping ahead. Pretentious, sure, but I'm a complete album guy anyway so it doesn't bother me. Number two, Megatop Phoenix by Big Audio Dynamite, , their finest hour wherein they mix up the usual funky topicality (Union Jacks, James Brown) with some new twists, romanticism (Baby, Don't Apologize, Around the Girl in 80 Ways) and even wistfulness (London Bridge, Stalag 123). But number one was an easy choice, one of my top ten albums of all time, New York by Lou Reed. Like Blaze of Glory, this is a song cycle that's meant to be listened to in one sitting "as though it's a book or a movie" (Um, Lou, who reads a book in one sitting, unless it's Dr. Seuss?). It's a state of the city, state of the nation tirade basically, yet in spite of its namedropping (Trump, Giuliani, etc.) it's still timely today...pretty depressing, that. Not just the album of the year, this is a strong contender for album of the decade. In fact, why don't I just call it the winner? Here's my top five albums of the 1980s (if anyone is even still reading at this point). 1. New York, 2. Trust by Elvis Costello, 3. Remain in Light by Talking Heads, 2. Under the Big Black Sun by X, and 5. The River by Bruce Springsteen.
I have the feeling that I need to listen to Blaze of Glory again. Joe Jackson "lost" me after Body and Soul which was the last of his records I fully enjoyed. His later releases had occasional tunes that stuck out but most of them I did not listen to again since many years. His first three albums were his best, then Body and Soul and the rest seems to gather dust on my shelf.
@@roxannewalsh Body and Soul is great, along with the first two (and don't forget about Night and Day), but Big World and Blaze of Glory are my favorites. In addition to those, I would recommend a couple he did in the 2000s. First, Volume 4, where he reunites with his original band. This is actually my favorite of his records with the Joe Jackson Band, though I'm sure that isn't a popular opinion. I also really like the followup, Rain, which is recorded with just bass, drums and piano. Some lovely songwriting there, and even some real rockers, guitarless, if you can believe that.
@@chrisboerger465 I just listened to Blaze of Glory again and it was in fact better than I had memorized. Still not top 10 of 1989 for me but worth another listen. And yes, you can rock out like this if Graham Maby is in your band...I just listened to Freedy Johnson's 1992 album yesterday which was produced by Maby and he also played bass there (spoiler for my 92 choices).
1. Pretty Hate Machine - Nine Inch Nails 2. No Control - Bad Religion 3. Disintegration - The Cure 4. Technique - New Order 5. Louder Than Love - Soundgarden

An interesting year where not many great albums were released. On the plus side, every great album was a classic - my five are

glad someone else had Tin Machine...even though i had it #6 out of an extraneous ten...
@@dancurtin9362 I like the second Tin Machine more than the first one. The songs are more melodic and well constructed
i'll have to give it another go...it's not on amazon prime, but probably youtube...initially i liked Earthling, wasn't sure, but i didn't listen to it much again...and somehow it had escaped me until recently that Gabrels was the guitarist in Tin Machine...!
🏆 Full Moon Fever -Tom Petty (his crowning achievement... plays like a greatest hits compilation)
RUNNER-UPS:
▪︎Disintegration -The Cure (hypnotic masterpiece... their 2nd and final appearance in my top 5)
▪︎Doolittle -Pixies (their finest album... Pixies' 2nd and final appearance in my top 5)

▪︎Pretty Hate Machine -Nine Inch Nails (I wasn't into this album at the time, but nowadays I realize how groundbreaking it was)
JUST MISSED THE CUT:
▪︎In Step -Stevie Ray Vaughan (after SRV kicked his coke habit his guitar playing relaxed and elevated to a whole new level... so sad that we lost him shortly hereafter... pains me to leave this out of the top 5)

▪︎Nick of Time -Bonnie Raitt
▪︎Journeyman -Eric Clapton
▪︎Yellow Moon -The Neville Brothers
▪︎President Yo La Tengo ‐Yo La Tengo
LIVE ALBUM OF THE YEAR:
▪︎A Black and White Night -Roy Orbison ("The Big O" might be the most underrated artist in rock 'n roll history... Elvis Presley envied his voice, Bob Dylan admired his songwriting)
EDIT: Not a deep year for 5-star classics but there's a lot of good "second-teir" albums.

@@AbbeyRoadkill1 I think its equal to Couldn't Stand the Weather and a bit behind Texas Flood, but yeah, its underrated. Other weeks it might be #1 for me on this list but John Lee gets the nod here.

AOTY: Tom Petty - Full Moon Fever
🏆
I think that's 4 commenters now who have Full Moon Fever in the #1 position. As much love some of the other albums from this year I was compelled to pick the Tom Petty record. All killer, no filler. Every song is great.
@@AbbeyRoadkill1 It's the best album of Petty's catalog, had to be number 1.
Thumbs up for Queen's The Miracle. Really underrated album.
5. Neil Young - Freedom
4. Pixies - Dolittle
3. Lou Reed - New York
2. The Cure - Disintegration
1. Bob Dylan - Oh Mercy
good choices
Pretty good year. Not quite to 1987 level but still excellent. Apologies to The Cure, Madonna, and even Motley Crue (my sister's favorite band at the time was Motley Crue and this I think is by far their best album)
Nice. Got all those on my top 10.

1. "Full Moon Fever" by Tom Petty
We have the same #1. Full Moon Fever is a songwriting tour de force.
Winner - Pixies - Doolittle
Runner ups:
The stones roses - the stone roses
Faith no more - the real thing
Nirvana - Bleach
NIN - pretty hate machine
My original #2 + #3 were albums that do not comply with the rules:
Burning Spear - Live in Paris (aka Zenith 88) (a live record, a hypnotic shamanic celebration of the man in the hills)
Wire - On Returning (a compilation of their first three albums condensed to one CD, it adds its own sense and progression to the material)
Five Honourable Mentions - Tracy Chapman - Crossroads, Pixies - Doolittle, Fugazi - 13 Songs, Lou Reed - New York, Kirsty MacColl - Kite
5. I admire her other albums as well but this accessible song album works astonishing well without losing any of the wit and lyrics she has been known for before and after.)
4. Anyone who liked the Traveling Wilburys in 88 will love this little gem as well.)
3. Sadly it was their last release - the 1998 return was the Lurie brothers with all new musicians using the old name.)
2. One of their best albums - that means something as they have a very strong discography which may have sold 10.000 albums worldwide by now...)
Rules? What rules?
@@markgatica12 No live albums, no compilations - rules? well, a kind of agreement since the series started. The guys made an extra video for live albums in the 70s - I expect they do the same for the 80s...
Always interesting choices. Glad you mentioned Kite. Not enough people know how good Kirsty MacColl was.

Eclectic band with a heavy jazz influence... from my hometown, Seattle.

5 - New York - Lou Reed
All excellent albums, but the Stone Roses rule.
i am 33 now my birth year was 1989 aww man i was so glad to see 90's as a kid
1. I *love* so many Rush albums so completely, yet I could never get that into PRESTO.. i don't know why, it kinda freaks me out cause i love 80s Rush
1. Pretty Hate Machine - Nine Inch Nails
2. Doolittle - The Pixies
3. Paul's Boutique - Beastie Boys
4. Rhythm Nation 1814 - Janet Jackson
5. New York - Lou Reed
Candleland! What a great choice! Glad to see Mac in there.
Lou Reed "New York" for me.
My top 10 (not a big standout year to me, but still some heavy hitters):
1. Savatage- Gutter ballet
2. Voivod- Nothingface
3. Marillion- Seasons end
4. Anderson Bruford Wakeman Howe- Self titled
5. Joe Satriani- Flying in a blue dream
6. Testament- Practice what you preach
7. The stone roses- Self titled
8. Queen- The miracle
9. Overkill- The years of decay
1. Wrong - NoMeansNo
2. Bucketfulls of Sickness and Horror In an Otherwise Meaningless Life - Alice Donut
3. Rock n Roll - Mekons
4. The Real Thing - Faith No More
5. Floating Into the Night - Julee Cruise
6. Paul's Boutique - Beastie Boys

10. Stone Roses - Stone Roses
Close calls for Bad Religion, Neil Young, De La Soul, Morbid Angel, Operation Ivy, Godflesh, Coroner, Kreator, Terrorizer, Lou Reed, Bitch Magnet, Tom Petty. Really great year for me.
A relief to see that I am not the only one to appreciate the Mekons...

Ah well that's because I loved it so much back in the day and this record influenced me more than Nirvana's other records and for me it's their best still....the one I can listen to all way through....so easy pick for me

Great top 5, love ALL those albums!
Marillion's "Season's End". Wasn't sure how they'd continue after Fish's departure but i was pleasantly surprised.
1. Pretty Hate Machine - Nine Inch Nails
2. No Control - Bad Religion
3. Disintegration - The Cure
4. Technique - New Order
5. Louder Than Love - Soundgarden
Doolittle and Stone Roses for me. You guys have listened to more stuff than me though. I'll add Lou's New York
1. The Blue Nile - Hats
2. Kate Bush - The Sensual World
3. Faith No More - The Real Thing
4. The Stone Roses - The Stone Roses
5. Pixies - Doolittle
No "3 Feet High And Rising" or "Paul's Boutique"? Those aren't just great hip-hop albums, they are great works of art. Great channel - Speaking of 1989, when you doing a Tragically Hip ranking? (or a group ranking of Todd Rundgren?). Great channel fellas.
Not a lot of rap on our lists… at least until 00s. But thanks. We’ll get to those two eventually. - Joe
