This is very smart and resourceful from a manufacturing perspective. It’s hard to make a new mold for a new piece so reusing old pieces in different ways is a lot easier, cheaper and smarter. This also gives Lego pieces a wider range to be used in many different ways.
Lego also has very specific methods for disposing of unused molds. Iirc, the dismantle them, salvaging anything that can be reused, and then the rest is placed in a hole and buried in concrete. However I know for a fact they used to just bury them whole in concrete, rather than salvaging parts.

I wish the prices weren't 1 full work day per 2 hours of lego building but I guess if we measured everything we purchased in work hours we'd probably ruin our lives with stress.
OMG. I had the Indiana Jones set growing up. I didn't ever think the revolver was used as a handle for a gas can... I thought it was a super gun with extra ammo. Even as an adult too haha.
Alight, let’s talk about Lego botanical series, my sister loves them and I’ve been blown away by how creative they are, some of my favorite parts usage that is strange and genius. First, on the orchid set, some of the flowers are reprinted heads of the demegorgon from stranger things. The succulents are full of fun design choices such as eggs for leaves, and blasters to hold the petals of a large maroon flower in place. Then there’s potted plants which use both newsboy caps as leaves, as well as clam shells. Finally and one of my favorites, is the bonsai tree using over 30 little frogs as pink and white leaves
Based on some of the things mentioned in this video, I was able to look at my Viking Village set and notice how some items were used! -A simple black pistol is used as the spigot for a mead barrel. -Golden hot dogs are used for horn-like ornamentation on the top of the mead hall. -As well, a minifigure set of epaulets are used for more ornamentation. I thought these were really clever uses!
I think a lot of the sets from the botanical collection are worth mentioning. For example, the wildflower bouquet uses unique colored pirate hats as flower petals and green sausages for stems!
The fiat 500 blue lego set (77942), in step 76, says to put on two 1×1 round studs. However, it only says where to put one of them (on a technic pin on a stick). (The other stud in the next step -77- appears in its place behind the sticks between the seats. This stud only appears in this step then disappears for the next few steps until it's covered up.) In the next step the stud thats supposed to go on the technic pin doesn't appear there, and the mistake is only fixed by step 158. (The stud does appear by steps 78 and 141, which are both the last steps of the bags (1&2). It appears and disappears multiple times). In the yellow fiat 500 (10271) you can see what is supposed to happen, the mistake is only by the blue fiat 500. Two mistakes in the same step. The interesting part is that lego just used the same things for the set and just changed the color. But they added a mistake too... The set number for the blue fiat is 77942, the set number for the yellow fiat is 10271. I tried sending this to your email, it didn't work
its actually pretty wacky to me that the set at 0:55 has a machinegun. a lot of things ride the line of "we wont depict modern military weapons" but this is definitely cutting it a little close
you may have covered this already, but in the friends botanical garden set, the plants in the back use an amazing assortment of minifig accessories, like saxophones and shoulder guards!
The 76989 Horizon Forbidden West tallneck has a lot of interesting features for the build such as skateboard pieces for the four tails, the snow-mobile leg pieces as antenna on the back of the head, and large green rib pieces as tall grass on the base.
The lego Jazz Quartet uses a video game controller piece as the Bassist's bow tie, A golden gate door piece as the inside structure of the grand piano, and lego heart shaped studs as the hair ornament the pianist wears. Those were just the one's I found interesting, but the set also uses some season 5 Ninjago Ninja star pieces as the bottom of the stands that hold the drums.
In the lego set "Joker's trike chase" (76159), Batman's car uses a few 1x2 hinge brick top plates on the side of the car as a little detailing. I hope this was helpful!
The droideka set uses three backwards red lipstick pieces for the eyes, the lion knights castle uses a brown frog below the loo and its village expansion set has a bird's nest that's actually a beard piece, the Deku tree set uses brown pirate hats as the eyes. Those are some of the genius piece uses I can think of.
i'm slowly working my way through all of this channel's videos and what's really 500 IQ is the writing and editing for each video. it's just so well done.
Continuing the sausage love, the anchor for the massive LEGO titanic uses black sausages, and I love that. It also has a plate slotted between two studs, which feels illegal >.
They reused the printed minifigure head for a globe in the Galileo gift with purchase, but it's inaccurate, because Australia wasn't on any European maps or globes of the time! 😊
Have you considered looking at interesting part usage in MOCs too? I once used a 1x6 barrier plate as a train windscreen and have seen many a sausage used as a brake pipe.
In the Lego tiny plants set, there are multiple genius techniques 1 the false shamrock has purple butterflies 2 the jade plant has dark green hats 3 the red sundew has red hairbrushes 4 the yellow pitcher plant has green mop tops and red battle droid or skeleton arms 5 the pincushion cactus has flowers of top of it
I knew that Ferrari set used the stud shooters for exhausts, but I was quite surprised, upon building it, to discover that they included triggers in them.
Fun Fact!: Lego set 10321 (the 1961 Chevrolet Corvette) uses Banana pieces and light saber handles for the bumpers! And uses Gray Hot Dog pieces (or Glizzys) for the sides of the grill!
I’ll be honest, I preferred the original design of the A-Frame cabin. From what I recall the guy who designed the original concept is in the Manic Miners discord. One of the main differences was the trees.
Another mention you could do for the sausage pieces is how they are used in The Beatles Yellow Submarine set where they are used as railing near the periscopes at the top of the build
On the back of the 2010 AT AT there was revolvers to add detail and also a hammer on the side of the head to hold stuff together. Please Spitbtix, put this in your next one.
2:25 funny thing is, the set that introduced the part they'd use for future bird nests, had a birds nest in the set, but didn't use that piece, if you look at the top of the bridge, surprised they didn't use it then
in The Insect Collection, there are several neat uses of parts, Under the hercules beetle's wood, there are two white croissant peices used as grubs, and the use of bucket handles as feet is neat too. The Praying mantis's feet are sand green revolvers and the antennae are golden crowbars but my favorite part use in the set is the mantis' forelegs as the serrated sword in solid lime green, which up till then only came in transparent marbled colors to represent fire or ghosts

5:36 - That trumpet piece is cool because it's made with mostly common pieces. Love it when Lego does that over smelting a new 'trumpet piece'.
