Don't worry about the missing plug, it's to fill the gearbox oil, you have oil filler access on the outer gearbox cover. It only becomes a problem if you have a later engine fitted with an early (non plug) outer cover. I have a 1967 which has an access plug on the crankcase, I think this was omitted from 1968.
As said by @InTheShedUK, your fill plug is in the outer cover. In other words, that is how they came in 1968. Also, an inexpensive tool for timing your 68' can be purchased for around 30 bucks. Triumph part number 60-1825. Remove the timing cover, install the tool with the 3 screws and you have a pointer for timing by strobe. Time the bike, remove the tool and put the cover back on and away you go. An engine stand makes bench work a whole bunch easier too! Triumph sure did some odd things through the years...
