Hearing VIII: The Rinne test is a comparison of air conduction (TF held in front) to bone conduction (TF held on mastoid) hearing. The TF is held at the rear then the front and the patient is asked 'which is perceived louder back or front' for each ear. Generally AC should be better then BC. Best not to talk during the test, best to ask this afterwards. This gives an indication of whether there is a conductive or sensori-neural loss (at the frequency of the TF). It also helps identify a potential difference between the two ears. For Weber ask 'is it heard in the middle, right or left' middle shows symmetry. As a general pointer with TFs the sound either travels to the greatest conductive loss or the better cochlear. If you can remember this sentence it will help you work it out. Hope this helps. Best of luck
I am currently a second-year Medicine student studying for my Nervous system block exam. This video helped me revise for my Physiology lab exam. I hope it goes well.
Thank you so much, tomorrow I have my final exam for FNB (Fellow of National board) Critical Care Medicine , video helped me a lot. love n respect from INDIA
What handsome and intelligent medical students :D Very informative and thorough, thank you very much for this video. As a nursing student, it has helped me prepare for my exam, and I will be tested on how to perform a cranial nerve test and searching for abnormal findings. Have a great day!
Well done guys - thank you for this! I was a medical student back in 2004 and we didn't have You Tube or you guys then which would have been mighty handy. Studying for my GP exams at the moment and my medical school days have come flooding back. Do you have a video demonstrating how to perform a complete cerebellum test?
Is the patient the student's little brother?! I notice in this version you don't test acuity in each eye individually? How can you get this exam down to 5 minutes (we have 5 minute OSCEs)
for the tuning fork test, if you NEED 512 hz then you NEED to avoid hitting the fork so hard that you make the tines hit each other, which produces an overtone series above the desired frequency.
Why when the visual fields test is done, does the students cover his eye as well as the patient? - I've got no medical experience so it might be a really obvious answer to some.
Because the patient's vision is compared to the student's. We assume that the student's vision is normal. So, when the student can see his finger from his peripheral vision and the patient can't see it, we assume that the patient is having some problems with his vision.
Really helpful and explained so well and clearly. Just wanted to ask that where did you touch him with cotton wool and asked about sensation before testing on face?
In India especially in Kerala neither the doctor nor the patient introduce while making diagnosis. The doctor is only, nowadays, looking at the details in the system in front of him to know the history and he will start to check the status etc of the patient and arrive at a decision about his disease. The patient can receive the medicines from the pharmacy and go home. Here there is no relationship between the patient and the doctor. But surprisingly like a morning star Venus rare few doctors make a rapport with the patient and these patients are having speedy recovery, in my assumption.
+Mustafa Alwan Absolutely. In an OSCE setting you'd generally only be asked to do a subset of the cranial nerves, not every one. In addition these videos span a longer time frame as they are shot and edited to provide educational value, rather than a quick run through of an exam.
@9.21 if hearing is abnormal Rinne and Weber tests are needed to find out whether the deafness is neurological or conduction typeIf hearing is normal Rinne and Weber needed??
I'm not convinced this isn't the same person with just some good editing.
no me too
