How to Run Node.js in VS Code From Scratch

  • As you're learning to program in JavaScript, you've probably used an editor in the browser that will run the code for you. However, the next step in your learning process is to learn how to run Node.js JavaScript locally on your machine. What better way to run your code than inside the most popular editor in Web Development, VS Code (code.visualstudio.com/).
    In this video, we'll explore two different ways to run Node.js in VS Code. We'll run the node command in the terminal manually. Then, we'll look at the Quokka extension in VS Code to make the process even simpler.

      Nothing is a waste. Spend 5 hours to do 5 minutes of work, not a waste. You learned something that you wont have to go through again. Trust me. I have spent months doing things that take others a week.

    quokka thing is new to me. I would always create a new sample(some_number) file and run that and then switch between terminals...Nice to know about this.

    Starting with Javascript and I run into an issue in VS code where nested array data was not being displayed. I had already installed Node js but I was using the debugger tab instead of the terminal.
    This helped me a lot. Thanks.

    Hi James, sorry can you a tip on the theme you're using showing the arrow shaped blue background on the prompt ?
    I also saw on your fullstack-react-js course somewhere in the video where you vscode interface showed the date each line of the code was written as you scroll through the code, like a timestamp on each line of the code, sorry, how can do that.?

    I am coming from python and start learning JS. So for JS and VSCode, I think your tutorial is to setup Node/NPM globally, but for individual projects, should I create virtual environment similar to how I would with Python? If so, how can I do that?

      Do you have nodemon installed? You can run "npm install -g nodemon"

    When i write node app.js nothing happens it just creates a new line and when I tried it with nodemon app.js it says " File C:\Users\Termitten\AppData\Roaming

      It could be because of PowerShell script execution being disabled. Try "Set-ExecutionPolicy Unrestricted".

    Hi, can anyone help me with a "problem"? It seems to me that I can only properly run the command once I go to "file, save" on VScode. Is that true? It was the only solution for me to see the Hello World, after following those steps of node."filename".js at terminal. Otherwise, it would just not run at all...

      You’ll have to save your file for it to run with the most recent changes.
