Uber's Self-Driving Truck Makes Its First Delivery | WIRED
Staff Writer: Alex Davies
"almost always human error..."
You all do know that 70 percent of truck related accidents are caused by personal vehicles.....not truckers.
IngeniousFirefly human error belonging to the person in the smaller vehicle. www.truckaccidents.org/statistics/
True. I would hope there are devices available, or in development, to warn other drivers when they're in a no-zone or too close to it. Do front end mirrors mounted forward of the cabin help with that?
Bacons Strip A human driver is supposed to pull over and check the tires and load every so often. Might as well take the breaks at those points. Humans will be on board until those tasks are automated. Or truck stops will be converted to service the automated trucks that are programmed to pull over at those intervals. By the time trucks are fully automated, investors in transportation will be looking at gong back to rails again. It's the most efficient, with smaller drones working out of straight trucks to make local deliveries.
It won't happen within the next couple years. It will take a long time. People should be aware and watch for it so they know and can figure how to invest in their lives and not need the job being outmoded anymore. If you're a truck driver, stick with it as you otherwise would, just focus on building your savings until the industry doesn't need you anymore or no longer enough for comfortable pay. Then take your time to move into doing something else.
Everybody should prepair. When an industry transitions do to better tech, it often needs fewer people for the same amount of work. There is stil an upside, shipping demands are still rising. I don't know how well that will balance out for drivers in the long run. I suspect small operators who manage well will suffer least and either they or one of the largest will be the first to have full automated fleets.
I really hope these trucks don't use Uber Maps or else it would probably end up driving off a cliff.
this. i swear i ised uber maps and it took me to a closed road twice.
I hope that does happen so the dumb mfs who invented this can realize it wasn’t such a great idea
Worse through someone's house your right
🤣😂
The way that trucking works is that most cargo is delivered in "Lanes", meaning going between two specific cities. An autonomous truck does not have to have the ability to go anywhere at any time. It will just go back and forth between Atlanta and Houston, for instance. So it doesn't need a map of British Columbia
my computer does crash once in awhile. at least it doesn't kill anyone when it does.
Bruce Wilson creators of your computer assumed that crash of pc wouldn't kill anyone. They aren't meant to be super reliable 24/7.
Bruce Wilson do you honestly think there would be less deaths with human drivers than computer drivers? you've got to be kidding me. the roads would be a million times safer with computer driven vehicles.
Your PC tower is nowhere near as redundant or robust as a system like this. Its even powered by a gigantic inline six diesel generator of sorts :P
DBH Productions67 yeah until bad people figure out how to hack them and crash them.
Bruce Wilson. I hear your argument, but computer systems are already in place monitoring and controlling vital and dangerous systems (ie nuclear plants). Fortunately there's all sorts of back up systems and ways of safely bringing an automated vehicle to a stop without it suddenly crashing if there's a technical glitch.
What we do need to be concerned about is AVs being hacked. That's still a problem that the software developers need to figure out.
Drivers would remain on the road if trucking companys treated drivers in a dignified manner.
Truth most of these company threat drivers like garbage.
And if this truck were to be involved in an accident resulting in GBI or death, the developers of this technology should be held 100% liable.
They wanna tote how it's safer, fine, but then they should be held to that standard.
Like pfizer, moderna, and J&J??? 🤪
Yes. More specifically the company and its owners should be held accountable. "developers" could be confused with software developers or engineers who are much more honest about the limitations and risks but simply have no freedom to share that with potential customers or the general public due to their employment contracts. The people who know those limitations but choose to oversell what they make would be more guilty.
Who's here because of Andrew Yang?
I'd love to see this back into some of the obnoxious docks I've had to deal with.
Please change your youtube name...
It's always in good weather that you see these trucks!! Let me know how this does in the first major snow storm or black ice ...
Tuff one
NO ABOUT SAFETY! It's all about really punishing USALL!
Blacc ice,......slide, slide, slide and crash you giant robot!!! 😀
Probably kill everybody that is on the road.
Drivers should quit driving now so these companies wont be able to afford these.
I’d like to see how good it reacts to a steer tire blowing out hahaha
Right lol
LMAO....
ROBOTS SUX
I would like to see it go down a snowy grade. Or deal with a highway closer trying to park in a full parking lot with now parking spots available lol
Once this technology will become industry standard, I will imagine the conventional air tires will be a thing of the past..
That truck driver was very brave, getting out of the driver's seat and going to the sleeper while the truck was still moving.
If you think thats brave you must spend your whole life lying in bed...
Theres more to truck driving than just driving In a straight line on the highway.
there is more in the technology of robotics and automation than just driving a truck..
funny how they want to replace drivers but cant automate the loading/unloading of trailers
When I drove for 7 months, a company I delivered water to used robots, you just had to make sure the parking was almost perfect.
You have no idea
Because replacing the driver is more important
Take 5 hours to load water into my trailer
Proctor and Gamble is getting to that one, they've already removed the standing forklift portion considerably.
No this will just give truck companies an excuse to pay drivers less
Driving teams may lose a member.
Mr Butterz among other excuses
Mr Butterz right! companies will pay truckers less and then buy automated trucks with the money they save.
Mr Butterz Well pick another job.
Nope they won't pay less they will fire them
This seems very awesome but what about 3 million jobs? Gonna be a rough time if they start taking over jobs. Also wtf ice road truckers is gonna get boring af
They quit after a year, at least according to the statistics, truck driving is a very physically and mentally demanding job no wonder no one wants to continually work in this sector.
Jobs? AI(artificial intelligence) and robots will replace ANY job that's easy to learn and with lots of repetition. Drivers, teachers, sellers, lawyers, agriculture, anything similar to those jobs. The only human jobs left will be few people to maintain AI(AI programmers and technicians) and robots and the art world. Anything else can and will be replaced in the next 50 years. If you have young kids make sure they follow AI as in 20 years they might end up on the streets, as Mcdonalds workers will be easily replaced by AI too.
Demi God SOME quit after a year, but many do it for life.
WALZ97 What about accidents due to the trucks on roads; these self driving trucks will prevent accidents and this is much better!!
human race is evolving there are better jobs and people are getting smarter we cant be doing the same thing we did 1million years ago...farming transportation and simple jobs that only require force and simple decisions will be replaced by computers.
how come they are always on quite perfect roads lots of truck accidents are caused by bad car drivers anyway
A self driving truck needs a human to get it to the highway!😂😂😂
I feel like it will just gonna be like commercial planes, it is all auto pilot now but they still need a pilot to take the blame
@John Doe Why doesn't the video show the truck docking to get loaded and then docking to get unloaded? Its BS!
@John Doe lmfao. It can’t open its own doors, fuel itself, or make turns with a trailer without hitting whatever’s on the corner. Plus the geocaching of the roads has been a problem. Simulations still show the program hitting low bridges every time. They’ve been having a lot of programming problems with the trailer aspect.
@John Doe what crawling into the sleeper while it’s going down the road? The truck didn’t do anything more impressive than a Tesla. This isn’t going to end well for somebody. Not sure who. But someone’s going to be disappointed
@John Doe and? Planes can land themselves too but to keep the industry flush they still have pilots.
Wait till the radar goes through a bug swarm, gets clogged, then drives off a bridge.
As a truck driver it’s extremely hard to Imagine these taking over cause of all the stuff you have to do outside and inside the truck signs weather pre trip scaling load securement chain laws light checking air leaks there’s just sooo many variables
I really believe that they just want to hurt US!
Great point, a lot of things they said here that I question and suspect it to be political!
I just can't wait for the 1st self driven truck's RUclips channel to pop up.
Live 24/7
this would likely destroy the economy.
IngeniousFirefly jobs from where? the county is not producing enough now
IngeniousFirefly not even close
Your comment seems to have attracted the attention of several shaBOTS. This is how you know you're over the target. Boycott all companies that use this type of tech. I do not shop at any stores that use self checkouts for instance. This is all a pretext to usher in a communist surveillance state. Look up UBI (Universal Basic Income) this was one of the topics at the annual Bilderberg meeting. The most effective way to combat this is to boy cot izrael as they're behind all of this.
The Great Depression part 2
The economy will be booming as almost everybody starves.
Robots don't pay taxes though
This one does, assuming they don't repeal the fuel duties. Truckers have per-diem deductions for living expenses on the road, so even though they make okay money their taxable incomes are so low most of them don't pay federal income tax anyway.
Alexander Roderick Interesting..Although I'm amazed at the technology I do feel for those that will see job losses or pay cuts...Have seen many factories and distribution centers cut jobs and introduce more automated technologies
@@AlRoderick that’s not true at all you’re going into a war and you people just keep pushing and wanting to be poor
Listen, and understand! That truck is out there! It can't be bargained with. It can't be reasoned with. It doesn't feel pity, or remorse, or fear. And it absolutely will not stop... ever, until it has delivered!
lol
Unemployed drivers can form gangs and hijack these very expensive self driving semi's (and cargo), which have no one to defend them on the road.
Good idea you got there, Dominic Toretto.
Good idea you got there, Dominic Toretto.
Or the company can protect their assets with cameras and guns for self defense. Auto detonate if person were to enter the cabin. Lol
@@Turnpost2552 hackers can just spoof the gps and have the truck deliver a trailer full of expensive TVs to the thieves. Easy Money!
@@JohnDoe-yh2sf so...the wild west again?
I want to see how it operates in precipitating weather. I hope the sensors don’t stop working.
2019 we didn't notice the robots taking over.
Lol This comment is so underrated.
Ppl are gonna be driving, realize it's a self driving truck, and FOR FUN, run it off the road, and that will create MORE SHORTAGES
Self-driving our jobs away, one-by-one...
5 years ago and we are still doing human trucking. Don't believe the hype.
When did they decide it is legal to drive without a driver behind the wheel who is always ready to intervene?
I have only seen the slow cute google car driving without someone watching over the breaks. Or is the guys in the back responsible when there is a crash. But how could he if he doesn't see what's going on around the truck.
In California, they are trying to manipulate the law, right now!
Programed by a human. So when this truck runs over a packed minivan, it will be the programmmers fault.
Wait till you have a software malfunction with a 40 ton vehicle going 60 mph.
I am sure truckers quit within one year because , it's not worth giving up their entire life for 600 - 800 a week ‼️
Mike Remvidas trucker make about $5000 a month
Broo quit men thats if u own one no just a driver
This is made by a handful of scientist and computer geeks who will try to sell there idea to become super rich...this thing will have to pass through so much government red tape ,and the depart of transportation ..and the years of trial and error..my job as truck driver dosent feel threatened
Yes. Hopefully. Hopefully the government requires it be proven safe before other drivers are put in harm's way. The FAA let Boeing do its own certification for the 737 Max which lead to a lot of deaths. Hopefully driverless self-driving will require better evidence of safety and the government plays a more active role in permitting or refusing the vehicles operate without a responsible driver.
Wait till they get hacked that will be beautiful.
Or if the truck's computer gets a virus.
funk off sooooooo true bro
just one off millions of reasons that this will NEVER happen
@@nicholasadamek8166 I think it will happen eventually. I don't really see why it won't. But who knows?
@@t3ddyb34r5 yah i dont knoiw about that
What happens when the road is closed? Does the truck set til someone comes to move it
What happens if there’s a sudden stop in traffic?
Will it stay on the interstate roads an not take u to tiny dinky roads while u read a book?
Can it tell overhang bridge height when comin in to one?
How will it handle a half mile long rough roads with pot holes?
The Uphill an Downhill empty or loaded?
And there are some roads out there with no lines or the lines are faded
So a kid hacks the program and then what an accident that will make. Lots of inventions end up in the dump.
And these trucks will be roaming around without being connected to any network at all ??! What happens if a dear, other car or a truck cut in front of this monster? Will it use a Star Track technology and shoot a laser beam destroying it? This is a bull crap! Can I get a job like this? All my life i have to actually work to make money, this looks like you are spending other people's money and play a Myth-busters in a real life. Maybe even killing someone along a way.
Oh, so why must I shut off my phone in a airplane if it can't effect (hack) the computers and cause havoc to the flight.
+TheToolGuy Its been well established that Hackers can hack into Personal Vehicles via a wireless connection through onstar. Yes is can happen and is very simple for those in the know. You are the F++++++ stupid one here.
+ The Tool Guy, First of all, your language shows that your father or uncle touched you improperly when you were a kid, so go get some professional help. You are right in one thing, I don't know why the f**k i got myself caught in this discussion with the morons like you. I know it is impossible but I would really like to meet you and explain you my standpoint... Go get some help
clearly you don't understand how hacking works. If this were a serious issue planes would be crashing all the time from being hacks.
A much more powerful application of the self-driving application (vs. civilian convenience)...this is what this technology is "meant" for: long distance cargo transport where the route is almost completely on the highway, the potential for human error is so great and with such high consequences (all relative to application of one person being driven in a normal sedan to work with auto pilot).
Replacing the human element where necessary, because humans get fatigued.
stupid comment
maybe view it as the auto-pilot system that helps many commercial flight pilots.
Except that it cant land the plane (park the truck) for you.
+Dragon Butt Not YET, anyway.
autolipot can land a plane. Read about auto land function
An airplane full of people is MUCH MUCH MUCH more valuable than a truck full of Goods. That is why they are willing to put a pilot in an airplane even if the plane can handle itself, no one would want to take the chance. But for a truck it is a different story.
Still it doesn't take their jobs..
Yang Gang called it!
Great I'm out of work soon then.
Be prepared in the long term , but in the meantime a human will still be needed to supervise
Adolf Fist Ya This was meant to be a quick buck not a Career.
Simpsons guessed it again
No, they didn't guess. The people who write that show read the news, white papers, case studies. Try it.
Oh yeah sorry i totally forgot that Self Driving Cars and trucks where a everyday thing back in March 28, 1999
You probably didn't even know what episode i was talking about, its called Maximum Homerdrive and was first air'd back in 1999. Where Homer gets a job as a truck driver and then finds out that all the trucks are self driving.
And yeah to figure out that there are going to be Self Driving Cars/Trucks was a very possible future but it doesn't change the fact that they put it in the show a very long time ago meaning they predicted/guessed it.
Don't forget about family guy. they guessed the islamic terror attacks on boston.Archii™
They didn’t guess anything. The ruling class already knew about this years ago, they just like to mock us peasants through television and movies. It’s called mind control, and indoctrination to condition our minds to what’s ahead of us without resistance.
2:10, i believe that is denver, colorado, next to my neighborhood.
Is it possible to get the soundtrack for this video? I'd love to hear it in clarity.
As a Truck driver of over 4 years...this will never take off (maybe 150 years from now) At the most it will become an aide to loung haul truck driving..These things will NEVER take over the trucking industry ...There will always be a need for human involvement: I cant picture these things driving through a city knowing when and exactly how to turn sharp corners, and deal with traffic lights... Precise backing situations, Getting to a shipper knowing when and what dock to pull into, waiting on other truckers to pull out at receivers, swapping trailers.., what about when the truck breaks down and it has to pull itself over at the side of the road? or a tire blow out? What about in bad weather and those sensors are covered with snow dirt and ice and cant "see"? Will it still go through weigh stations? So many more examples of why there will always be a need for human involvement I
Not a truck driver myself, but i agree with you. This is just way too dangerous.
Many of these things can be solved by having an operator (not a driver) in the cab to preform certain tasks. A fully automated system is decades if not generation away from being developed. However, sooner or later it will happen. Those jobs lost would then transition to mechanical maintenance as well as observational "towers" where a remote operator could theoretically control multiple trucks at once.
mrsexxc1 thats what innovation is for. Not in 150 years, the way tech is developing at a phenomenal rate. I give it 30 years max
Some of the things you have listed as problems have already been solved by Tesla and Uber. Anything requiring detection on a clear day is already better than human response time. Humans can't see omni-directional 1000ft from your car. The laser systems on the cars can. We can't respond within milliseconds to changing situations. It's not humanly possible. This isn't 150 years off by any means; it's more like a decade from not needing drivers (and factory workers, fast food employees, surgeons...). Hell, Uber already has driver-less cars available for residential pick up in Pittsburgh with no human involvement. It's already here while you wonder how long it will take.
mrsexxc1 so said the horse n buggy makers
the age of man has ended!
It's the AGE of Evolved Technology! Which I'm 50/50 in agreement and denial!
Because we are smart enough not drive anymore? I think age of man just begun and animals ended... We are really killing it, badum tis..
the age of women and machines have began(?)
Bio-Sexual Interface men women, what's the fucking difference..
No, the dawn of the horse has begun again!
All this has done is added autonomous ability to a semi truck. AKA its turned it into a trolley horse :D
How is it gonna handle in snow covered roads or blizzard?
when your calculator stops giving you error codes that's the day you can trust one of these trucks.
Andrew yang
Why didn't they just use a tanker truck to transport the water?
because it's not water.
BlazeChronicGreen420
Budweiser is water.
Beer jokes
You'd have to be a tanker driver to understand this question. I wonder how R2 will respond to the liquid sloshing around curves and hills.
Scott Wooldridge yep. I'm sure they will write a program but it will just encourage way way slower driving. and people thing trucks are in their way now? ha.
2:59 "Over the next couple of wheels"?
Can it get from Atlanta to Texarkana and back in 28 hours?
THEY TUK OURE JOOOBSS!!!
they tuk kerduuurrrrrr
Robots will never be able to replace humans when it comes to things like driving.
The biggest challenge to self-driving truck is hijacking. Criminals could intercept and take the entire truck load.
So, ultimately, a self-driving truck would still need an armed escort.
or keep the driver onboard for mechanical faults that can be fixed in the event that something goes wrong with the truck while it's doing its trip. saving jobs, saving families.
wait a minute!!!!!! didn't they do an episode of the simpsons with something very similar to this years ago!!!!!!!!!
*decades
are you here YangGang ?
2020
Try it in the Rocky mountains in the winter
Does it do pre and post trip inspections
Yang 2020
And the Simpsons... showed this when Homer become truck driver! hahahaha
The boys are thirsty in Atlanta, and there's beer in Texarkana, we'll bring it back no matter what it takes.
i personally think this should only be used to improve the driver not remove them. plus i think it should only be used when there isnt a driver present
I can't wait to see one of these trucks laying in a ditch stupid ass technology
I need a beer now.
One Sentence describes this: An Accident Waiting to Happen.
man hear it goes my fellow truckers we are going to be without work in the next 8 years or so
Hello Wired , can i get a reply pls thank you .
Hello!
+WIRED heyo
are you a robot? If your not a robot say, " I am not a robot"? ( Smokey and the bandit )
websuspect It's not. Look at the black background on Wireds name
Killer trucks are now coming
The human error is not the Truck driver...its other car-drivers who can't see, drive stupid, or are impaired.
Anyone who's seen Logan knows how much of a pain auto-trucks will be.
Let’s vote for Andrew yang
Alireza Mohammadi there are loop holes with his ideas, but he definitely is leaning towards the right direction.
Haven't seen this truck in heavy traffic yet? It appears it can only negotiate highway and not city streets.
that foreign guy he was in ghost busters lol
That is truly terrifying
There go's another job. Machine's Replace Bank Tellers. NOW THIS!!!!!!!!!! This is bad very bad!!!!!! Hey Wired, do you condone this crap??
IngeniousFirefly I made my point ,after all your small pea understood it.
riclagriclag i hope the world ends first
#Yang2020
Why does it have cb antennas
It might reduce casualties but it still won't be a nice sight to see a large truck without a driver crush you into a million pieces when they do malfunction.
Anybody that thinks this is a good idea...ask yourself, would you fly in an airplane that doesn't have a human pilot and is strictly flown by computers?
Have you flown recently? That's already a thing. Do you think pilots fly airplanes the entire time? Think again..
That's not the same thing..there's still at least 2 pilots on the plane dumbass, i'm saying actually no human involvement at all
mrsexxc1 pilots use autopilot when they ascend, cruise and approach. the Time when they fly the plane manually is when they are taxiing, taking off or landing or in emergency situations. the plane has a traffic collision avoidance system (TCAS) that alerts two planes that they are coming close to each other. It tells one plane to climb and another to descend.
I, for one, welcome our new robot overlords.
then be ready to not have a job and money.
BlazeChronicGreen420
I'm ready.
Tesla did too. Their cars, not so much :D
Jerk,What do you do for work ?jerk
riclagriclag
My work is creating the machines that will take over your job.
The one person that is going to benefit from this, is the the owner operator with the single truck operation.
I want to drive up next to a semi and see no one in the driver seat but it still keeping lanes and whatnot.
VOTE Andrew yang 2020 he talks about this
My uncle is a professional truck driver... he loves his job and the least thing I want to happen is having something he loves to do be taken over by a soulless radars...:(
Sir Avon nah. Technology must progress. Tell him to go back to college and learn a new trade. My parents went back to college in their 40s. Ur uncle should do the same.
You should have said, the least thinq i want to happen is having him in my house all day 😂😂😂😂😂😂
I used to think "Terminator" was an unlikely concept... *USED TO* is the key phrase!
How is it going to dock? How is it going to know the difference between shipping bays and receiving bays? How is it going to know the difference between the bays of two companies sharing the same building?
Yang 2020, this proves everything he has been saying.
The driver was in the sleeper for 2 hours while the truck was driving itself. That is plain stupid and extremely dangerous. There is many things the sensors cant pickup and without it having a 100 percent communication with cars and trucks on the road its only the stupidest deadliest thing moving at 65mph on the interstate. They should be sued and stop calling self autonomous it still requires a drivers. He said it required a driver to get it on the interstate and it took over from there driving in a straight line. Wow what a fu@@#cking miracle where else have I seen that. Wait for it. Yes Tesla. A small electric car company that was the laughing stock for big car manufacture's but now all the sudden the driver assist is a self autonomous vehicle. Can anyone please call this crap for what it is. It is stupid!!!!!
Nancy Gordon.Truckers will become couch patatoo.
Nah. This is a great idea. Most crashes, if not, all, are due to human error in judgement. Nice try tho...
OK now you know that load all goes to the second floor.. no elevator.
The self driving on the freeway could be viable, but city driving through tight turns is a pipe dream. Just so many what ifs that could happen.
This is just so wrong.
What if a tire blows out and youre sleeping in the back
So what if the red air line brakes,i could understand that this would be a nice assist for a driver sort of autopilot on long streches of highway..
Andrew Yang 2020
Came here after listening to Andrew Yang!
Same, pretty crazy they have this - and this video was posted freaking 3 years ago!
That’s funny so did I after listening to Yang
Change my mind I’m voting for Yang in 2020
will not ever replace drivers computer's crashes will always need drivers
One thing they didn't seem to acknowledge here is that usually the truck driver is not at fault when there is an accident
so if there is an accident who do we blame???? good luck on this..does it know when to change lanes to avoid accidents..mmmm
Blame the guy with the rifle that wanted free paper towels, so he shot a steer tire out. He no longer had a job to buy them...Think I'll take out a reefer trailer, all that beef and pork for the taking. I bet a load of cigarettes would be a worthy haul...LOL, I've got a new job...
what the fuck you talking about? its obvious you can't write complete sentences and it doesn't make any sense. i think maybe your responding to the wrong comment or wrong video...
if you want people to take you seriously than you have to talk like you have some brains..work on it!!!!
