Yes, I always like to show mistakes so others don't make it. Good eye, I did not realize until I started mixing, then it was too late. I almost deleted the segment and thought I should show it as others would do it too if they don't know. The mistake though was still very cool looking.
I have used this method of spirit + starch + paint to make a tentacle monster for an action figure display. It's good and durable. Every one who sees the display bends the tentacles and plays with it. From little boys to grown men. I did have to replace it after the wire broke.

Shred the fresh cast through a grinder, it can probably be then used to bulk out the next cast. It works bulking out RTV silicon molds. Do a test if you can first, it might just work!

Hello tried this, I tried this with molds but the pieces are shrinking at least 30-50%, acetic 100% silicone with mineral spirits 10:1 cornstarch. Maybe I put too much mineral spirits?
Yes, the mineral spirits, or any additive that evaporates will, of course, lead to shrinkage as the volume of the additive evaporates. Although straight silicone does not shrink, if you add something that evaporates, your item will shrink that amount. You will have to calculate shrinkage to end at the size you want. To add to the challenge, it does not shrink linearly, as in thin sections will not shrink as much as thicker sections. The ramp I made did not shrink width or height, but it did lose a lot in length. I did a later video where I use silicone oil, and it did not shrink, if you wanted to try that. You can also, leave in mold (hold in place) until it dries a few weeks, and it will be the size you intended. I haven't covered shrinkage yet, but I get this question enough to make a video on it.
Good thought. I would try a small quantity at first. My thought is that as soon as the cornstarch contacts the silicone, the cure clock starts. When thinning, especially a lot, it takes a good long time to get it to homogenize.
@@GEOsustainable I was thinking that mixing the cornstarch into the spirits would prevent clumping, similar to when I make a bechamel sauce I whisk the flour into a small amount of water, rather than directly into the butter...
8:46 the container and zip-lock bag are made out of either polyethylene or polypropylene, 2 plastics that (just about) NOTHING sticks to AND the strongest chemicals can’t break down. Car battery cases are made of it (HDPE)

Nice Video! If the mould wasn't asymmetrical (or was built to be reversed), couldn't you have used the bottom of the mold as the finish surface? Would likely have worked for the lumpy pour as well, but the tip of thinning the solution before adding the accelerator is superior.

You used the dish soap over a clay mold in the video that you just suggested; so will the dish soap work on the rubber door mat with using silicone instead of clay? The doormat is standard rectangular size. Should I build a box around the mold when I go to pour the concrete...I think I want it to be 2-3 inches thick.anymore suggestions/recommendations are greatly appreciated! Feeeling a little intimidation , so I think ill need a supply list so i can take on this challenge.

Ok, now, i have never seen 100% pure silicone that is white.. its always clear at my store. Is there a specific brand that sells white 100% silicone? Or is that a different type your using? Thanks again for this. Going to use acetone first since thats what i have hah
Most hardware and home improvement have 100% white silicone made by DAP. Others make it, it is pretty common. I use the type that evolves Acetic Acid during cure.
I make silicone thinner with mineral spirits and I would like to know how much time it takes to get in rubber state. I don't know if I put to much mineral but it passes 24h and still liquid and stiky. Should I wait or it's a fail?

Well...my 1st experiment was a totally failure cause I mix to much mineral spirits.and then rebuilt the formula and had 45gr of corn starch and it still stayed liquid .so...I did a big messy cause I didn't use the bag. In conclusion and keep in mind for next time:use the bag;mix 100ml of spirits to 300ml of silicone.and had 25gr or a litle more of corn starch. Is this rigth? This is my future plan.i'll update you then.

Yes, it can. Folks have reported their projects do shrink. It seems it may shrink on the longest side. Although, I still use this and it does not look like it has shrunk on me.
The mineral spirits was all I needed, as the form is paper backed foam board. The mineral spirits soaked into the paper. If you use another material you can use vegetable oil, soy wax, or soap. I used soap in this video and show how to apply it. ruclips.net/video/452y9FQ7a0M/видео.html

I have used the plastic bag idea to mix up epoxy resin as well. It makes it so much easier to deal with, and I know it’s mixed well. Thanks.

At what point did you add the corn starch the 2nd time? I never saw you add it. Love your channel!
Right after I blended the silicone and mineral spirits. Make sure those are mixed well first.

Great question. They do not. I have been using this device daily since I made it and it is the same as the day I removed it from the mold.
