You are not to old and your not nuts I'm over 70y and I'm still out there as much as I can if we don't record these areas along with the history it will just go away, keep up the good work
The fossils were neat! Climbing around like that is good and remember you're only as old as you feel...I'm 65 and some days feel like 80 other days like 45...I have low back and hip issues from Hashimoto's...I got vertigo looking in that fan shaft OMG! Thanks for the hike!
That air shaft? Kinda REALLY freaky! ☺ Oh, the bottom showed up well enough to make me think about moving farther back in my chair! 😄 And, BTW, you CAN'T be too old to do this! I rely on all of you young ones on RUclips to do the "on the edge" exploring, cause it's really cool but I'm too old to be out doing it! Another good one Cliff. Glad it was suggested. I usually "binge" your content for an hour or more on some weekends (can't watch just one!), but had never seen this one.
This particular one in the video ? Would have loved seein it still intact, looking at the bent up hardware in the slabs where the motor and bearing pedestal would have sat, im gonna guess either scrappers got to it or it was moved to another mine.
Agreed. There used to be an open shaft in West Scranton back in some former coal mining areas across from the intermediate school. I almost ended up in it the one day when by myself. I was walking on what I now realize was wood and I went to take another step and there was nothing to step onto. I got out of that area quicker than I've ever moved in my lifetime. Once I was clear I took a rock and tossed it in there. I heard nothing for a good 5-10 seconds followed by a loud splash.
Looks like they replaced the huge old inefficient fan with a smaller more efficient fan,too cool, love this spot! I can smell the black damp from here :)
Thanks WW! That is a spooky hole. Those places where the shafts go down down down are spooky at best. Years ago I threw a rock down an old shaft kind of like this one and it took a long long time to hit bottom. I often wonder about animals falling down such places. Another great WW Vid and Kind Thanks once again. DaveyJO
I would have loved seeing that fanhouse while the fan was still there and intact, both the original steam powered guibal fan as well as the (electric?) one that replaced it, as im sure the original one was atleast for a time kept as a backup.
Cliff I was concerned for a bit ,when you zoomed in on the 1st mine, before you said a tree blocked the view, looked like there was a person in there,@4:44 please be safe
Nice video..i think you can enter the 2nd fan shaft from where you statred. Gotta send a camera down these things. We should colabarate sometime(you were the one that inspired me to start my RUclips channel) i have lots of resources about places like this arround the area.
There's one up in Springbrook Township way back on some dirt/mud roads off of Bowen's Road. It's absolutely MASSIVE. I remember swimming in the lagoon at the top of it as a teenager in the summertime.
@@thewanderingwoodsman7227 I just tried seeing if Google Maps would at least let me get some GPS coordinates to get you close to the one I mentioned. Apparently the side road up in Springbrook Township that I lived on as a kid was not deemed worthy enough to get mapped. Though I could definitely link the general area and you'd unfortunately have to figure out the rest. It's not too far off the main dirt road it branches off from though. Here's an image from PA 690 staring straight at Bowen's Road, which you'd have to go up till it turns into a dirt road then follow that till you see a dirt (and rocky) road going off slightly to the right just before a curve. Definitely need a high truck to get to this one. www.google.com/maps/@41.3091324,-75.6038178,3a,75y,233.15h,77.42t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1ss1FJ4-69AXYnd-DIxBnetg!2e0!7i3328!8i1664
All you need to do is anchor a rope around a solid hardwood tree with a running bowline then descend down in using a figure 8 with a harness, then use an ascender to get back out,no need for all that pulley stuff... and of coarse an o2 sensor and hard hat.
lol wrong county the mining operations were in Columbia county and Northumberland county. the village of locustdale limits fall in 3 counties just no houses are in the Northumberland county part. the mine shaft opening in the side of the hill, just be mindful of sinkholes behind it. I was up there one day and all was good and the very next day 2 large sink holes opened.

At one time locust Dale and Lavelle were the same town called rock town and we're split apart
Nice hike trail adventure... 👍😊
WOW Originally from Ashland, PA . There is an actual Mine Tour in Ashland - "The Pioneer Tunnel". Worth seeing!!

Interesting place. Thank you for being safe.

I have a picture of the fan that feed the mine, my dad and uncles worked there when they were young.

WOW!! Thanks for this adventure! I appreciate that you use a sound mind in how far you venture....alone....
Holy heck, that deep shaft was darn epic!!!
Gotta get there with my tree climbing gear someday...you can see the bottom of that hole safely.
Thanks for the tour -- and be safe out there !
Wow that shaft was kinda scary eeek. I don't think even Jay would contemplate going down there. A cool video, thanks for sharing. x

I noticed that too. Looked like someone in the tunnel lurking. 4:39. Optical illusion.

Hey Cliff cool video!
The weeds looked like Japanese knotweed. Keep up the great vids!
Correct.
Yes, that's the name
Been to the bottle of the fan house with the metal roof over it, pretty cool stuff. If anyone is interested In what I found I can send the vids!
check out "Panthers Den" in Clarksville pa. behind the Yablonski property. pretty cool...
4.44 definitely someone in the opening.
Cliff's spirit animal is a mountain goat. lol
Looks like it went down 100ft, and there was water at the bottom. Need a GoPro on a fishing pole. 😁
I am making a camera rig with a gopro so I can that.
Sounded like you had a Crow barkin at ya!
Hey Cliff, what year where you born,I was 1970?
Enjoyed this location,very cool!

Anyway you can head to the Delaware River and do a piece on the old canals? That would be great.
someday I'll get that way and do that.
Looks like a well used major hwy..
I find he never goes into any mines ever lol
Bring JP with ya next time...go down.
Many, many, miners died right there.
After the bottom was there a tunnel that went off on either side? Could you see?
I couldn't see from up top, but there most likely was.
The Wandering Woodsman okay thank you
I can point you and jp in the direction of an 80’ waterfall and a 16’ waterfall and some old ruins near scranton if you ever want to

I believe there was a bad mine accident there my grandfather lost an eye in in that cave in
They left a lot of coal behind
I am proficient with rope. Simple pulley system would do the trick. Would need 4-5 very fit and very, very trustworthy persons!
VERY trustworthy......
Ok then, who's bringing the beer?

I knew three counties converged in Locustdale, I just wasn't sure which one I was currently in.
