Great video! I am in HVAC/R school and graduate in Dec. Two things that intimidate me are heat pumps and failed or restricted TXV diagnosis. Thanks for the video. I will remember the High SC, High Head Pressure symptoms.
I hear you, I was the same exact way when I first started out just keep studying refrigerant flow and use measurequick and digital instruments so you can observe all of your pressures and temps at once and i promise it will all just click to you one day. Thanks for watching!
In this video I use the Fieldpiece sman 480s along with the Job Link psychrometers all the tools I use a listed in the description as well. You're welcome and thanks for watching!
I was so stumped today. The subcooling was fluctuating between 3 and 12 every 30 seconds. The superhrat stayed around 45. The coils and filter were clean. It was frosting up downflow of the txv. What the heck??? The pressures were 70 and 250. I can't find anything online about the fluctuating subcooling. Is there a name for fluctuating subcooling and what would cause it?
What was the indoor and outdoor temperature? Sometimes low load conditions can cause this. Based on the pressures seems like it was pretty low load on the system
Did you recommend a transition from the furnace to the coil? Huge air flow restriction there. Who ever did that install did a shitty job! Did you do a static pressure test? Before I even condemn a txv. I check the filter. Correct fan speed, static pressure and if the outdoor coil is dirty.
Hey, thanks for the feedback! . Yes I verified airflow. Not to mention, on the video it showed that the head pressure and Superheat were through the roof, which wouldnt occur in a low airflow scenario. Low airflow would cause low superheat as well as low head pressure. But I did end up replacing the TXV on this system and it solved the problem.
My ac unit at store unit I've called the installer out several times due to water leak I finally looked and just after the txv and the tubes are icing up when unit cycles it defrost and melts leaking water. Does this mean the txv is bad the unit is still maintaining temp most of the time unit is a 1 month old trane unit. Installer can't seem to figure out what is wrong with unit and says pressures are fine but it won't stop leaking and it's icing up after the txv just like on this one.
If it’s a TRANE, take it to the scrap yard and put anything else in the place of it. I’ve never had nothing but headaches from residential and commercial trane systems. I despise trane to their core. Overpriced garbage.
Hey thanks for watching! After verifying the restriction was in the Txv I quoted a new txv. I replaced it a week or so later and pressures and temps were perfect after replacing.
I had a tech stated I needed a new TXV because it was damaged. My ac unit was freezing up out side the unit connection, which is is outside. Apparently, he adjusted the TXV and my unit no longer freeze up and the air flow is extremely cold. He told me part of the txv was not secured, but he recommended me to replace at a cost of $ 900.00. My question is if there is a blockage in the TXV screen could tech remove the blockage or could one of value was not receiving or releasing enough flow? So far the ac is working great. I am in Florida. I have a Rheem unit and it is only 7 years old. I truly appreciate your feedback.
Hey I'm not sure exactly what the tech did but it sounds to me that the TXV was clogged internally and the tech opened the Txv using the manual adjustment valve to buy you time until you have it repaired. If that's the case it's not likely you be able to clean it. Also you don't want to run it forever with the valve adjusted wide open because if the blockage wherever to break free you might flood the compressor.
@@dlm9477 I had it changed on Friday at a cost of 450.00 for labor and service call. I plan to use this company to do s service check each year. Thanks for getting back to me. I will mention the filter dryer on the next service check. Overall, the ac is working great. What I learned from this is that the TXV goes out frequently in Florida due to the heat as well as my ac unit is in the attic. I do have an solar attic fan to keep the unit somewhat cool.
He likely secured the sensing bulb to suction line, yours was likely loose and kept TXV open. TXV being stuck open causes suction line to freeze up (refrigerant will be evaporating inside the suction line) and no cooling due to higher than normal evap pressure (flooded coil).
Oh when I made the comment about flushing lines, I was only referring to the flushing the lines. I would still pressure test, pull vacuum and do all the common commissioning procedures that follow.
loss of charge or, partial loss of charge in the thermal bulb of Power head of the TXV . The symptoms are low back , low to normal head pressure ( usually low head ) . High supper heat , high sub cooling . If your head is high than someone might of overcharged the circuit , trying to bring the back pressure up . Seen it lots time in commercial jobs over the years . High head pressure is not a symptom of a bad power head on a txv .
Man I would have replaced that TXV with a piston and you never would have had to visit that home again lol. Good job bro!!!
Lol, I hear that. Thanks for watching!
Considering you're here if ever looking we are desperately looking for good technicians as yourself over at Airtron. Love your work man...
I appreciate the heads up! Ill definitely keep that in mind. Thanks for watching!

Cold yes, light rain maybe...
Thanks for the video. My split mini is doing the same thing...
What made you believe the txv is the issue? Thx

It could be lower refrigerant that causes it to ice up at the cap tubes as well. Have they added charge on any of occasions that they've come back?

what was your recommendation to the customer? did u pump down and search for a restriction or just quote new txv

@@weeziemarklen TXVs are a pain in the ass. Best thing to do is just get it replaced and make sure a new filter dryer is installed.

How come you don't need to pull a vacuum?
