Really interesting, thanks. My mission stick is unfortunately glitching somehow. E.g. With afterburner II, the ship is constantly juddering around a little, both when your hand is off the stick entirely and when you're steering. I guess my first port of call is in gonna need to open this up and take a look at the optical sensors or something. Wish me luck! Also if anyone reading my comment has had a similar experience... Please let me know if you found a way to fix it. I'll update here if I manage to fix the issue.
@@hotcoffeebreath glad you saw this video of mine, it's one of my all time favorites. And yea, sounds like a component on the inside is dying, check the reflective pads under the joystick one may have fallen off.
@@ThirstWorldTTV Ah cool. I really hope I can fix it. Then I can enjoy Afterburner and Space Harrier in real arcade style! I'll be sure to check some of your other videos too 🙌
Cool video. I have a pair of these and I believe you can connect them together to either side of the base to play PD. Also fun to hear from someone who can't properly pronounce the word "button".
Lmao. I'm commenting here from your response. Badass man! I literally JUST modded my Saturn with Phoebe last weekend. Not as cool soldering wise, but awesome. And here I found your channel tonight. YT officially reads minds. And apparently so do you! I didn't have the money growing up for that joystick, but outs now going to be something I'll look for for my Saturn.
Dude. Phoebe is sooo sick. I'm so happy you have that. And thanks for watching this one. I found it to be so cool and I always wonder if other people think it's cool too. Hahahaha
I never had this mission stick but I do love the fighting pad. The analog controller that came with SATURN nights is good for the Panzer Dragoon trilogy.
i have that controller too, i love it, i actually use it alot, more than the fight bad and the mission stick, but when i found out i could use a flashlight to controll the mission stick... GAME OVER, literally. haha, michael you ever played dark savior on saturn?
It's also good to play the original Wipeout with as well, feels almost like you are actually piloting the craft... that said, playing Wipeout with either the steering wheel or the Twin Sticks are also great to use as well!
thank you, i was actually very very excited to make this one. i just thought the concept was so cool, the moment i opened it up and figured out how it worked, i was astounded and in my head "OMG I CANT WAIT TO MAKE A VIDEO ABOUT THIS" haha. UUULLLTTTRRAAA NNEEERRDD!!!
Apparently you can do that but it only work for one game and it will not work as a replacement for the teal twin stick in supported games unfortunately.
I would love to see you crack into the Dreamcast Panther Flight Stick. Mine is now having problems registering button inputs when the stick is all the way to one side. I'm assuming that its probably a line that loses contact when stretched. I tried opening it up and found that MadCatz hides a lot of their tabs underneath grips and internally, and don't want to destroy it in the recovery. Thanks again man!
Nice to see it uses optical sensors that don't wear! But what about the protocol used to transmit data to the Saturn? Is it really the same protocol as the 3D-Pad?
I would love it if you did a breakdown on the SEGA twin-stick controllers for both the Saturn and the Dreamcast. Because there is obviously a chip of some kind that identifies itself to the console that it is a separate piece of hardware and then makes its own default button mapping. If there was a way for someone as yourself to identify that chip and possibly replicate and implement it, then we can all have affordable dual-sticks to play the Virtual-On series. At the very least, allow us to remap the button layout on a controller to have cardinal-direction button layout as a form of second stick, because current controller default button mapping is atrocious to Virtual-On play.
SwankeyMonkey when I get one. I will do it, your absolutely right too, alot of this older tech needs to be figured out and aspects of it remade and preserved. And that's the fun part!
SwankeyMonkey thank you for watching this video by the way, theres alot of random different types of videos on my channel and this is one of them. And those are all my favorites so thank you so much.
Thank you, sir. Your work is appreciated and really helps the gaming world, especially those like yourself with your tech-understanding (superpowers) opens up gaming potential to be appreciated by even more, and better. Subscribed! I'm always watching videos like these so I can learn how to alter/improve controllers for different game applications. Similarly, the Mission Stick has the bottom expansion port 'sub-control' that allows you to plug in a second Mission Stick to have (a cool hidden feature) tandem-stick control for games like Panzer Dragoon Zwei (did you know?) Again, the Saturn is able to recognize this, and adjust for these inputs. Although, this tandem-stick feature of the Mission Stick isn't allowed the same access of controls as the Twin Stick for Virtual-On. :-( So, it is your Mission (sorry) to employ your given superpowers to hack the Twin Stick chip and make it applicable to a standard Saturn pad controller, or even for a DIY twin stick controller. I'm not so tech-savvy (although I'm learning, from uploaders like you), but I do make custom arcade cabinets, something I think you can probably appreciate: ruclips.net/video/sBCYo9Kn1B0/видео.html Thanks again!
@@ThirstWorldTTV I learned the hard way never to take the e-clip out of a twin stick. 4 days of smooshing hell, but I finally got them both back together without breaking them (and the first stick barely got together with 2 people working together). Hardest, nastiest spring I ever encountered. All I know is I left enough lithium grease in there to last another 25 years or more. Best advice I could ever give anyone would be to get some in a spray can with a straw. Spray it down the cracks, and up the bottom hole, and hope for the best. Video coming.
Hmm, this would actually make the stick VERY durable as far as the electronics are concerned, however i do question how precise it actually is compared to a standard potometer based analog input. I love the dreamcast but i cant play SA2 with its magnetic field based analog stick very well, its just not precise enough.
That is pretty cool the way it works. Too bad the stick is only campatble with a handfull of games worth playing. Tried to use it with some Mech games it would be perfect for (Gun Griffon & Gundam Sidestory 1) and it wouldn't work at all.
What do you think of this sega saturn mission stick breakdown?
man thats sick, i didnt know that existed. The way it works is pretty sick also

i havent beaten it either, i'm decently far into it i feel, gotta be 40-45% in, gotta revisit it

right? who wouldof though that was possible with the flight stick... so cool

I want to see the twin-stick mode of Panzer Dragon II Zwei in action!
Great video!
thank you, this one was very exciting for me to make, i just find this so random, but awesome
I wonder if you can use the Mission Stick as a Twin Stick considering that there are two ports underneath and two sides to put the sticks.
Omg... now I want to try. Hey thanks for watching this video. It's one of my favorites and it means alot to me
Apparently you can do that but it only work for one game and it will not work as a replacement for the teal twin stick in supported games unfortunately.
It appartly only works as a twin stick in Panzer Dragoon Zwei.
Do you know if this is how the Saturn multi-controller (the NiGHTS pad) works as well?

Wow that's dope
I have a Saturn Flight Stick with a sticky L button on the button half. Is it hard to open that half and repair it?
Michael Steffes nope, pretty easy, thay was the problem with the arcade pad, the L just needs a nice cleaning
