How far apart did you space your cuts? How can you bevel this without a hand block plane?

doesn't sound like you lift the plane off on the return stroke. Your plane will retain its edge a lot longer if you do lift it on the return.

Kerf refers to the width of a saw cut. I'm tired of luthiers calling lining kerfing, it is lining that has sawn grooves in it.
