  • Lester "The Judge" Hayes is a 2 time Super Bowl Champion, 1980 Defensive Player of the Year and a 5 time Pro Bowl Defensive Back but is not in the Hall of Fame. The reason: Stickum. Even though it was a legalized substance when Hayes played in the NFL. Should he be in the Hall of Fame?

I met Lester Hayes on two occasions. Both were parties in Alameda, California, not far from Oakland and the Oakland Coliseum where the Raiders became legendary. That was in about 1981 or 82.
In context, my father had season tickets to the Raiders from the days they played at Frank Ewell Field until their horrible departure to Los Angeles. (but don’t get me started on that issue!). At the time that my dad bought those first season tickets, the San Francisco 49’ers ruled the Bay Area’s football fans. But my dad’s decision to be a part of this new franchise definitely part off.
The Raiders were born in a tough city, with strange, wonderful and great players. Players who didn’t fit in with other AFL or NFL teams. Players who had “issues” and players who had a past.
First, let me make it absolutely clear that“stick’em” was completely legal in Pro Football in those days and was used by many defensive backs, receivers and quarterbacks as well.
In 1980, the fellow I met at the parties, soft-spoken and friendly to everyone, including this white guy, had lit up the defensive game of football with an unheard of, thirteen (!) interceptions! Everyone watched intensely if the ball was thrown at a receiver in Lester’s zone.
Remember how much fun that was! I do!
So what is the point of this rant?
Lester Hayes, No. 37, of the Super Bowl Champion Oakland Raiders, should rightfully be inducted into the Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio!
    Now is the time!

Lester Hayes = the G.O.A.T at cornerback. Lester was the master of bump and run. He beat the crap out of receivers as they came off the line.. No one before/or since has punished receivers as bad. After beating them up.. he shut them down. Hayes played BEFORE receiving gloves were available. As someone who played CB and copied Lester's style.. my hands were turned to mincemeat hitting the snaps and attatchments on the receivers shoulder pads.. without hand protection- you were going to tear them up. Problem being you still needed touch to make INT's. Hayes solution was to heavily tape ... then apply stickum. Had Hayes played when gloves were available.. he would have no detractors. Lester grabbed 13 Interceptions in a 15 game season.. almost 1 per game. 5 time Pro Bowler. Lester should have been in the Hall of Fame at CB before Deion Sanders. Deion a great athelete and fast, great punt returner.... Hayes the better CB.

Clearly, there is an internal edge set against this brilliant MAN! At the time of his play, he also redefined the bump and run technique by allowing his teammates to be 10 on 9, when you take out a wr you also cancel a part of the Q. This is a considerable advantage when the run was a dominant piece of the NFL action. Several more reasons why he should be in the HOF, good day!

Next thing you know, they'll start removing Raiders from the hall! Raider safeties made it a risky move throwing over the middle in the 70's. Lester Hayes and Mike Haynes made it a risky move throwing outside in the 80's. Only 1 of the 4 isn't in the HOF: The Super Bowl MVP that picked off 13 in a season!

  • @chrisames2795
    @chrisames2795 3 года назад +2

He’s not in the Halll because of the disproportionate amount of Raiders already in. The rule changes including the stickum rule made job harder and harder while his dominant play on the field was consistent throughout his career.37 was the original shutdown cornerback of the modern game. His tackling ability is overlooked when he is compared to players that came after him. If a playground game were played with all the players in the history of pro football, Lester would be picked no doubt. He was the defensive player of the year in a Championship season. That alone should get him a bust. His courage in over coming a speech impediment while being in the limelight was an inspiration to many young people. No one ever accused him of being a dirty player. A sticky player yes. His nickname Lester the molester is rhyme and translates into Spanish perfectly , he bothered and annoyed his counterparts. The nickname and rule changes didn’t help his vote getting. But being a Pirate that wore a Silver hat and stole the ball frequently may have left a bad taste in his peers

He's not in the HOF because of the bias against Raiders players. Stickum was around long before Hayes and many other players in the HOF used it before he did. He certainly deserves to be in the HOF.

My first and only Raiders jersey was that of his stickum buddy Freddy B. I bought it in Pleasanton, CA whilst wasting time waiting for friends from Santa Rosa before a Bobby Slayton performance.

Hayes should definitely be in the hall of fame. He was a great shut down corner and solid tackler and so many big plays. The great raiders and cowboys players of the 70's never get any consideration. Lynn swan is in the hall but not cliff branch or drew pearson. You could make a case for jim plunkett or charlie waters or any number of great raiders or cowboys. Those 2 teams combined dont have as many as the steelers and thats not right

Players like Lester Hayes not being in the HOF is what makes being in the HOF great.

Fred Biletnikoff is in the Hall of Fame and he used stick-em all the time; he is considered one of the best wide receivers. Lester Hayes belongs in the Hall of Fame with his cornerback brother Mike Haynes!

A true bump and run, tackling , one man island corner! I am a Falcon, Redskin, Raider and Steeler fan. He was a more complete corner than Prime Time because he could tackle and run support.

Nice video man. He isn't in because he is a Raider, period. They will vote him in when he does just like Cliff and Ken. He needs to go in now!!!

I would take Lester over Richard Sherman any day. Lester had more picks in a time when the ball was thrown less and he played much more man to man coverage. And he played against Elway and Fouts and even Bill Kenney pit big numbers in his time. How Lester went from being a LB in college to a man to man cover guy in the NFL is amazing. And he played with a panache that was fun to watch.

Do sticky hands make you stronger, faster, more elusive, or help you break on the ball? Do they help you stay healthy and make you tougher? This is the league's fault, but recognize that the game was more brutal back then. Those were killers on the field and deserve respect at the highest level. They made us love the sport even more.

No question, Lester belongs in the HOF. One of the greatest CBs EVER! Sad that he isn't in the HOF but the dude that introduced Stickum to him is in the HOF. Make it make sense.

All this talk about stick-um, he didn’t break any rules. You can’t penalize him for playing by the rules. One of the best if not the best to ever play cornerback
