There's a lot of effort, patience and energy poured in each piece you create and sometimes we'll have those bad days, a lot and consecutively, lose it, love it, it has its ups and downs just like any passion you decide to pursue be it singing, dancing, acting etc.

I don’t hate drawing, I just hate the fact that I have a hard time motivating myself to draw because whenever I see other people’s art, I get demotivated, and then when I look at my art, it doesn’t look like I want it to look, and then I get demotivated even more, and I try to force myself to draw to at least try and improve some or because I saw something I want to try and draw, and I can only draw a singular line before wanting to give up because I don’t have any motivation

I don’t know if this will help you but it helped me. I used to be the same. I would look at other people’s art and get demotivated and think “I’ll never be as good as that.” But then I watched a video, I forget the name of it though, that said to look at the art of people you admire and study from it, take from it, and learn from it.
So I did. I collected a bunch of art from artists I’m a fan of and studied them. I zoomed in on the line art and looked at how this did their lines, studied how they used color, studied how they draw faces, studied how they draw eyes.
And then when I did that I started to feel motivated again and started getting excited to draw. Eventually I ended up creating something that I was genuinely proud of.

You shouldn't feel pressured to draw, art doesn't work like that. My only advise it to -wherever you go- bring a sketchbook. Whatever can inspire you. And study from what inspire you. There's a good looking tree/dog/poster in front of you? Try draw it without thinking. Shut down your mind. Like when your in school and you're bored and draw. In school you don't care what will come out, you just let your hand do whatever it wants to do. An artist I know said: When you look at someone else's drawing, don't envy them, you'll never be them. You can't, cause you're you. Instead study their drawing and ask yourself "What I really like about this drawing? Why this is so good looking for me?" and answer yourself. Is it the way they draw eyes? Or maybe hands? Good, try copy their work. You wont wake up one day and immediately draw like Leonardo da Vinci. Not even him did it. Cause drawing is a skill and you need to work on it in order to improve. Also close Instagram, pinterest, twitter or whatever makes you feel like shit. It helps, it really does.

    • @HBProductions.
      @HBProductions. 3 года назад +85

When one develops this habit over many years, I would say that it's probably one of the hardest habits to break free from. Very relatable in many, if not all aspects of personal life. It's like when a kid learns to like soda as a toddler and then continues to have it all the way into adulthood with no checks from an adult, then you or anyone else tries to tell him/her/it to not abuse it or consume it because it affects their health badly and then they either blow you off or lash out at you for "daring to say that to them". Until that person finds a way to change that habit or drop it, voluntarily, it's damn-near impossible for anyone else to help them or even show them the light, much less guide you there. It requires tons of self-worth, self-love, and self-brutal-honesty and determination to get out of that destructive lifestyle.

I dont understand how people can "improve little by little." My mom put me in an art-focused class since she knows I like drawing. But the constant pressure of people being better than you makes me loose motivation and I get stressed when drawing. Unlike those days I could just grab my pencil and start drawing whatever. I cant seem to do that anymore.

You improve little by little by consistently drawing and learning new things. These people aren't better than you so much as further ahead in their journey. And generally they'll be very happy to help you improve! The thing with art is there will almost always be some one you see as better than you. It needs to be motivating not scary. You can get better. Don't be afraid of drawing bad pictures. Drawing bad pictures is good. How are you meant to learn how to be better if you don't know what skills you need to work on?

    • @3thalluing339
      @3thalluing339 3 года назад +46

I get your mom probably thought: “kid likes art! kid go to art school no more math just art, kid happy.” when in reality, art school is teaching you stress and the more technical, unfun way of drawing. Something I learned from an anime was to accept “defeat” and take the opportunity to learn from people who are on a higher level than you. Don’t just get frustrated and get mad at the people around you, but ask them what and why they took a certain approach to what they did. If you can absorb those techniques and etc., your art will improve and so will the quality of it. Practice mediums if you’re stuck too. One of my favorite stress relievers is drawing with a BIC ballpoint because you can’t erase and beat up your sketchbook with it with all of your frustration. It takes a lot of pride in yourself to admit you can take new things to make your art better from other people but it’s all part of the process. I don’t draw everyday, but I take minutes a day to look at techniques and analyze other people’s art process most days to keep my creativity going and absorb the information. That’s my “improving little by little” go-to. Every drawing I do, is drastically better than the one I did half a week ago.

// how people can "improve little by little//
very simple. You learn foreign language: today you learned 5 new words, the next day more 5 new words... - and so you improve your foreign language little by little.
It works for everything. Drawing isn't something special.

So much this. I’ve been an illustrator for more than 20 years and I’ve literally worked in nearly every industry. I’ve been an inker in the comic book industry. I painted book covers, board game and tabletop game illustration. Illustrations for RPGs, concept design, murals, I’ve even done technical illustration for the US military. This message is one of the hardest things to learn as a career illustrator. Especially someone like me who became very adept at adjusting my style to fit any situation / client. At one point was even a ghost penciler for a fairly famous comic book artist who was way behind on a deadline because I could mimic his style so well even he had trouble telling my pages from his own. BUT, I fell into a trap. I was so focused on getting the next gig and convinced I had to completely push aside the styles I wanted to experiment with to keep those clients, I realized one day, I had no style. In fact after a 15 year career, my ability to draw had suffered because I no longer knew what or how to draw without a client telling me do this and we want it to match this artist or this style (like Art Nuveau)
Once I realized that, I was working for the Navy at the time, I quit doing commercial illustration. It was scary. Then I became a tattoo artist. In the 4 years since I’ve done that I began rediscovering my personal style and slowly I’m not only getting more and more tattoo clients who search out me for how I do things but I’m starting to get more and more illustration work based on my post-commercial art style choices. If you hate what your doing sometimes you just have to step back and make sure your not trying to artistically shove your round peg into a square hole.

Whatever you have in mind, just do really really dirty pencil sketches of its most basic structure/figure. That's what I do. It should never start as perfect. If it starts to be quite close to the thing on your mind, then you just add details little by little. There's no shame in Googling references for any object. You can only draw straight from imagination when you have already built a wide image vocabulary. If you haven't yet, then Google is your friend.

I remember I was drawing almost all the time in school, suddenly stopped when I graduated high school and had to find my first job. I was out for all day, leaving for job at 7 a.m only to be back around 10 p.m I didn't last there for more than six months but I can see that from that moment I started losing my passion for art. It started when I was 18, now I'm 27 and I'm almost not drawing at all, with every year I draw less and less and I can't help it. In the meantime of this almost 10 years gap I've got my visual art diploma, I used to draw while being at university but not as much as while being in high school. My mental health problems started because I could't find a job in art industry, I couldn't find any job that was satisfying for me. Depression started slowly killing my joy and passion foreverything. I've lost most of the time playing games and procrastinating. and for what? For nothing. It sucks, I hate myself for that, I cannot help but think that it's my fault. It's my fault I couldn't find a job in art industry, it's my fault to chicken out about even trying to find it. It's my fault I was too scared to lazy to stay focused and work on my skill. I was always like "I'll start next week, next month, next year" and guess what? I never did. By now I'm still struggling with my depression, I wasn't feeling good on meds (which is not the reason you should not take them, talk to your doctor) and I had to quit them, now due to Covid it's very hard, almost impossible to get free therapy here in Poland and the private one is to expensive for me to afford. I've lost my job and I thought about trying drawing again but still struggling. It's like I've lost all my interest and it breaks my heart because I don't want to give up, not yes. I don't want to admit I won't be an artist one day, I don't want to admit I won't draw ever again. I don't want to admit I do not like drawing. Somehow I just cannot find a joy in it anymore and I don't know why. I miss the feeling when I had this urge to draw something back in school, I got bad grades due to that but man, that made me so happy back then.

I was a science student who went into an art college. I had never done art in my life (if you're wondering how I got in there, the entrance didn't judge you by art but by logic and creativity). I was bored with studying so I decided to take this decision, it was quite reckless.
It was like a new world to me. Everybody there was into art some way or other. The first year was about basics in art and I was terrible at it. I'd look at other people and felt so bad about my art. I became hell depressed.
Then pandemic came.. and i spent most of my time in art tutorials online. My art improved a lot, better than some people in my batch. As a studious person I am good at working hard and sitting in a place so I was able to improve. I started dreaming of becoming a fine arts artist and I loved what I did.
But there was a problem... I couldn't do art for more than 3 hours a day maximum. In fact many days I'd just binge watch series and do nothing. Art burned me out like hell. If I did art regularly for a month, I'd take 2 months break after that. It was very unstable. I was tired most of the time or I was lazing out, unable to do anything.
Soon it became clear to me I can't do this professionally. It was a pain to accept it, it took me another year to realize this. I still sometimes look at other artists and their arts and go into deep thinking and sad thoughts that I can't pursue this commercially but I think I don't really *love* art that way. Plus I can always do this in my free time which, ironically, is very therapeutic, especially inking.

it's been over a month since I finished a personal project. I only draw on the sides so I can't make as much art as most artists do, so the longer I don't draw, the more frustrated I become as to why i'm not drawing enough, which is true apparently. But then you said something like "focus on something that you popped open your laptop because you want to look at it again, 'cause 'aww man, I can't believe I did that'..", which I did just a couple of days ago, looking at that fanart I did that I still can't freakin believe that I pulled off no matter how simple it is, and it hit me.. I guess I should just really chase that feeling I get on finishing something rather than worrying if people will even like it or even see it.. It's a really nice thing to think about. Thank you.

She moved to New York and worked 60 - 80 hour weeks only to be bullied by those who had already gone through rising through the ranks. After years she moved back home and decided that (in her words) pieces of cloth were not worth the misery of a cruel and toxic industry. She now works in retail in a job she actually likes and lives with her supportive partner. You get one life and you have to weigh up what really matters to you. Creative careers are not for everyone but nothing stops it becoming a side gig or hobby.

Recently, it took me a week and half to draw something that could've been done in a day (and that was two weeks after coming up with the idea) not because of difficulty but because of want. I once read somewhere that Jason Fabok (DC Artist) practiced 12 hours a day for years BEFORE getting his shot in comics. Lol. Yep...I'm definitely not doing anything like that. Art isn't my vocation but my avocation. When I'm inspired, I'll crank out something and post it on Instagram. It is what it is and I'm content.

bro fr, ive been practicing 1hr a day, sometimes more. But I also dont see it as my ultimate vocation, its something that i like and you can work from it. I get tired of feeling im in the wrong for not feeling it as my vocation. The things I most enjoy doing, theres simply few jobs for it. Rn I think im finding the area i most enjoy in art, and trying to find that balance. Next year im changing careers and im scared tho

I cannot tell you how many times I've been stuck in that rut of, "I hate everything that I've done", or "why is it that my art isn't getting liked/noticed/etc." then just realizing I need to have my art please myself and just trace back to where I first picked up a pen. It's crazy how getting in a bad mindset can just tear apart everything.

I can relate to this deeply on some levels. I think this is an experience you start to encounter as a sort of intermediate artist when you already have some years of art experience under your belt but maybe your not quite there yet. you feel like you've already invested so much time into art and your thinking, wheres my return on investment? why do I still suck? why arent people appreciating me yet. i think you gotta learn to be comfortable with 'failure' and not being 100% happy with your work because no matter how good you are that isn't going to change.

Most people will be able to get out of that hole and start to feel good about themselves and their art. I kind of agree with you I just think you just need to stress hating it vs just being in natural progression.

I'm new at digital art and I'm struggling... A LOT but even though it's difficult to adjust, I enjoy making art. There are times where we are challenged to something new and we reached to the point where we want to give up but we remembered the reason why we want to do it and continuing to struggle until we reached the goal and the cycle goes by. I want to switch into semi-realism but I'm struggling because I'm not used to semi realism. I want to give up but everytime I remember that drawing is all I have and the only thing that I want to do for the rest of my life, I'm continuing to struggle and hoping that it was all worth it in the end.

software dev @ banks here, mate that's kinda how it goes for everything really, I coded whenever I could all waking hours for almost a decade and I loved every step of it because I was building the stuff I felt like building, til I got my 1st job at 20, it's been 2 years now and I only code at work I don't dare touching any of it afterwards nor think about it(i used to tho, but that's something you learn, how to detach and live your personal life), and aye don't get me wrong, I bloody love my job, the teams, the different projects, building something for so many people to use, but specially AND REALLY SPECIALLY the process of just me and the pc, the pc and me, and let's write some code all day straight, mate I live for that shit, and yet? there's still sometimes that I don't feel all that great, I've talked to many co-workers about this and yeah, we all love what we do BUT a job is a job, and no matter how much you enjoy it it's still a job, you build what your clients want, you have to follow tight schedule, and aye that's actually cool, but not exactly relaxing and fun. You do have some bonus points going for you if you naturally enjoy what you do of course but you'll still feel meh sometimes, but that's much better than hating the process of what you do and having to do it anyway! so I feel blessed about it, after work I get home, chill, work on my paintings, learn some more drawing techniques and practice, I do interpretations of environments from worlds like runeterra drawing demacia, ionia, whatever I feel like and I love the process of it but I swear to god, I can see it from a fucking mile away, if I had to do draw what clients told me to, also do it on a literal schedule, and sell it to get money for my bills, big yikes mate I would instantly lose all the appetite for it 100%. I keep it as a hobby for now, and later when I'm better I can maybe do a side hustle selling stuff here and there but always for fun, at my own pace and drawing what I want, but I'd never take that as a career I know it would absolutely hands down kill it for me too

thanks for the vid. i procrastinate, feeling anxious, keep finding tutorial or book ( tutorial hell), i'm excruciating. But, I won't give up. I believe these are the problems i need to conquer.
every one can draw, but not every one can bare the mass amount of information that artists need to learn.
um.....i know i might not have chance in this industry, but i have to keep going cuz i promise my mom i won't give up and will success buying foods for her. now she pass away, i still won't give up.
i don't want all these efforts i do and my mom provide me food, i don't want these in vein.
If i give up, i lost every effort my mom gave me.
so......i am going to give it a try and try and try until i die hard cuz you know digital artists sit all the time.
besides tons of mangaka died due to cancer or overworked.
Indeed give up is an option, but I don't want to hurt my mom even she is dead.
the reason that learning is painful is because the hipp.... whatever organ in brain, learning is next to fear.
i still love drawing, but the 'improving yourself everyday' part is ... well, idk, every artists go through it?

Maybe that's why I draw in the end, because I want to express my imagination

I remember on the first day of my inktober journey, i tried to do... realism... not a good idea... it wasted my time... i submitted my art really late... why? I tried to do something that... isn't me... Realism isn't what i do, it's not my artstyle... another memory is when i tried to force myself to learn how to color from grayscale, but i then realized that i only wasted my efforts trying to understand something that i wasn't yet ready to understand... i love what i do, i love drawing... and no matter what, i don't think I'd be ever so frustrated enough to give up that passion... it means a lot to me... and so, I'm going to take my pace and learn by my own pace! I gave up a stable future ahead for a future filled with passion, it's up to me to make sure i don't regret it!

I am a lonely person, so is hard to love yourself all the time, big true what you said in the video... SOLID advice!!! I firmly believe that being in love with the idea of being someone who does something, instead of being in love with doing the something itself, usually comes from some form of ego driven desire. Not necessarily in a way that makes someone a bad person... I mean... Maybe so... But people are often driven to desire being something by what societal ideas do for their ego. Almost like it seems that it's really about what people can tell other people about themselves and I think that it ends up being something that destroys the inspiration of great artist in the end. We have to get ourselves to a point where we can say it's about what we love. And you're right! Don't do the art that you think the industry wants you to do if you don't enjoy it! An artist in my life who has always been an inspiration of mine once told me that my best art will always be the art that I personally like the most. Having gone back and forth between what is real to me and what is accepted by others, has really shown me just exactly how correct that advice was! This was a great video. And you're gonna help people grow with this kind of content!

I think you are fine. No one is being super happy drawing everyday. If one does it seriously it's more a rutine, like a job. Some days are special, the rest is more doing what you need to do.
But maybe you can shake things up a little to add something new and fresh to the rutine. Maybe try collaboration, making a print, working in another room or outside, doing another style or theme or making a product.
Since storytelling is your thing, honor that! :) Try to involve story in your practise drawings. And make books or cartoons or anything where your storytelling can be involved too :)

Hey I want to share how I overcame hating doing art haha.
Back in April I was starting with this and I just couldn’t do what I wanted to do, I hated my drawings, but most important I felt so much stress while drawing. So I basically stopped doing any “personal job” to do only studies, learn the basics. I’m still on that, but damnn I enjoy so much being hours every day doing this stuff, and eventually in a couple months wel I’ll start doing all that stuff I want to do
I did it with AngelGanev's patreon, but that was my way. My point is that if u r hating the process it could be because of you don’t actually know what you’re doing and you just have to learn the basics, learn how to actually do the thing, cuz this “art” thing is made up by a lot of concepts and skills u have to develop, and if you want to do it all at once, well it’s stressful as hell

My dream has always been to make a living off of my art, and today it felt like it just wasn't going to happen.
This video made me open my eyes that while I draw things I enjoy, I'm also more focused on trying to get them out there to build clout, and getting disappointed when it doesn't happen. The part where you say something along the lines of make something you want to open your laptop and look at resonated with me. I really need to stop focusing on trying to gain traction with my art, especially if all I'm doing is running on ice.
Thank you again, here's to hopefully finding solace and more peace of mind with my art!

Funny thing is I don't enjoy drawing this way and have been pretty miserable and unmotivated to carry on drawing. so that comment you said about "Fall in love with drawing, The way you want to draw." totally changes my thoughts and thinking about how I want to draw.
    Thank you :)
