I never thought their voices sounded alike. They both have very distinctive voices where you can recognize them immediately even when you don't know the song. They don't even really sing the same types of music. Anita Baker is traditional R&B and makes a lot more ballads but Toni sings more contemporary R&B with a lot of mid-tempo songs. Also, Anita writes a lot of her own music so it hits a lot different when you're singing your own words. I lived in Vegas and I saw Toni's floor show a few times and I have seen Anita at the Essence Fest and Tom Joyner cruise. They even perform differently, they are apples and oranges, there's no need to pit them against each other.
Plus Anita Baker’s ears are also trained for jazz sing & she does a magnificent job.
