In December 1888, Tchaikovsky was commissioned to create a ballet by Ivan Usevorozhsky, director of the Imperial Theaters. Tchaikovsky, who was contemplating the concept of the work, chose 'Sleeping Princess' from 'The Tale of the Fairy' by Charles Perrault, a French fairy tale author famous for 'Cinderella', 'Beauty and the Beast' and 'The Cat in Boots.'
This work is one of the famous fables that have been handed down since ancient times in Russia and composed into a fairy tale by Perrault. "Sleeping Beauty" consists of 3 acts and 4 scenes. Director Useborozsky and court ballet choreographer Marius Petipa wrote the script and added music to it.
This ballet music consists of 29 pieces in total, but among them, No. 1 Introduction and Lira Fairy, No. 2 Adagio, No. 3 Allegro Moderato, No. 4 Panorama, and No. 5 Waltz are extracted and played as an orchestral suite. are doing Although Tchaikovsky used to write a lot of gloomy and sad music, strangely, his ballet songs were composed splendidly. This work, which was premiered in 1890, the year after Tchaikovsky wrote it at the age of 49, received a terrible criticism, ironically because the music was so excellent. It was rare that such sophisticated music was used in dance music, which was considered simple as an appendage of dance at the time.
Moreover, it is said that everyone was greatly disappointed when the Emperor simply commented, “It was okay!” and left after attending the rehearsal the day before the premiere at the Mariinsky Theater. This work is the largest among Tchaikovsky's ballet music, has many characters, and the stage equipment and costumes are splendid, so it was not easy to actually put on a performance. With that background, they are more famous in Europe and America than in Russia. After Tchaikovsky's death, the Diaghilev Ballet recorded great success at the Russian Court Theater and London's Alhambra Theater in 1921, and has since established itself as an immortal ballet work.

Lyra, a kind fairy, appears to her disheartened queen and tells her that the princess only sleeps for her and that her eyes will be awakened by the love of a certain prince.

차이코프스키는 1888년 12월 제국극장 총감독인 이반 우세보로주스키로부터 발레 작품을 의뢰받게 된다. 작품 구상을 고민하던 차이코프스키는 `신데렐라', `미녀와 야수', `장화를 신은 고양이' 등으로 유명한 프랑스 동화 작가 샤를르 페로(Charles Perrault)의 `선녀 이야기' 속의 `잠자는 공주'를 선택하게 된다.
이 작품은 러시아에서 옛날부터 전해져 내려 온 유명한 우화의 하나를 페로가 동화로 구성한 것이다. 3막4장으로 구성된 〈잠자는 숲속의 미녀〉는 우세보로즈스키 감독과 궁정발레 안무가인 마리우스 프티파가 대본을 만들고 여기에 곡을 붙인 작품이다.
이 발레음악은 모두 29곡으로 구성되어 있지만, 그 중에서 제1번 서주와 리라요정, 제2번 아다지오, 제3번 알레그로 모데라토, 제4번 파노라마, 제5번 왈츠를 발췌해 관현악 모음곡으로 꾸며 연주하고 있다. 우울하고 슬픈 음악을 많이 쓰던 차이코프스키이지만, 이상할 정도로 발레곡들은 화려하게 작곡하였다. 이 작품에서도 깊은 우울과 말할 수 없는 비애 대신 빛나는 정서, 우아한 음악, 비약적인 리듬이 구김살 없이 나타나고 있다.
차이코프스키가 49세 때 쓰고 나서 이듬해인 1890년 초연된 이 작품은 참담한 혹평을 받 는데 아이러니하게도 그 이유가 음악이 너무 탁월했다는 데 있었다. 당시 무용의 부속물로 단순한 것으로 치부된 무용음악에 이처럼 정교한 음악이 쓰이는 건 드문 일이었다.
더구나 마린스키극장에서 초연 전날 리허설에 참관을 마친 뒤 황제가 그저 “괜찮았다!”라고 평하고 떠나자 일동들은 크게 실망한 것으로 전해진다. 이 작품은 차이코프스키의 발레음악 중 제일 규모가 크고 등장인물이 많으며 무대장치와 의상 등이 화려해 실제로 공연을 올리기는 쉽지가 않았다. 그런 배경으로 러시아에서보다 유럽과 미국에서 이름을 더 떨친다. 차이코프스키 사망 후 1921년 러시아 궁정극장과 런던 알함브라극장에서 디아길레프발레단이 대성공을 기록한 후 불후의 발레 작품으로 자리매김하고 있다.
〈프롤로그〉 화려하고 아름다운 꽃장식으로 가득한 플로레스탄 왕궁. 옛날 어느 나라에 자식을 낳지 못한 왕비는 정성껏 기도한 결과 예쁜 오로라 공주를 낳게 된다. 이를 축하하는 연회에 여러 하객들과 함께 초대받은 여섯 요정이 어린 공주에게 한 가지씩 행운을 빌어주었다.
파티가 절정에 이를 무렵 수행관의 실수로 초대받지 못한 요정 카라복스는 공주가 어른이 될 무렵 손가락이 바늘에 찔려 죽을 것이라는 저주를 한다. 낙심한 왕비에게 상냥한 요정 리라가 나타나 공주는 잠을 잘 뿐이며 어느 왕자의 사랑에 의해 눈을 뜰 것이라고 일러준다.
