In todays video, we take a look at Lychee slicer. This is a resin slicer that I have heard a ton about over the last 6 months or so and finally got around to checking out. I was very impressed and today we will go through the slicer to take a look at the workflow and the various features it comes with.

Export scene is extremely useful. It's basically file, which opens in Lychee and its the model with all the supports, rafts, hollowing setting, etc and everything is editable. I save those in case the print fails, so I can just tweak some settings and print it again, without having to redo all the orientation, hollowing, supporting etc.

Thanks to Uncle Jessy for pointing out this slicer in one of your videos way back then... and thank you to ModBot for this "walkthrough" have been meaning to look at Lychee ever since I heard of the Chitubox "lockdown" - This presentation showing the mm scaling option for the models showed me Lychee is exactly the slicer I need to be able to slice n' print the pages of my 3D printed comic book readable by the blind - It will be amazing to to be able to scale each panel images as they appear in the paper comic... Thanks to the both of you!

I've only sliced one model so far, but it was dead easy. Literally just clicked the magic button until the mini fig was face up and threw it in the printer. Worked great!
Yea I think that's an important thing to realize: You can repeat the Magic process and it'll find other 'optimized' orientations for you to consider :)
So, I support a miniature patreon. They do all they're presliced files in lychee. They supply the lychee files for you to customize supports if need be. I've only used Chitubox so far, so I've been gimping myself. Going to go ahead and download this now and give it a shot to see if the free version allows you to customize the supports/other neat functions.
The best of the best I learn a lots from your video thank you professor.
One awesome thing you didn't touch on that was available in that version and newer versions is the "Detect Islands" option. The slicer will scan each layer and mark where unsupported islands are, then you can tell it to support those islands and if it can't, you can manually go in a support them since they are clearly shown to you.
I can't use Chitubox, the GUI feels too clunky and unrefined like it was made for Windows 98.

Thank you for this video. Chitubox just goes full on nuts on my laptop. Fans start spinning full speed, slicing takes forever, saving takes forever. Lychee just does it. Will need time to ajust to the interface, but for now, I like it
Glad to have discovered Lychee because Chitubox still feels quite buggy at the moment. Apart from random crashes and hanging, hollowing the model and adding infill in Chitubox generates many artifacts in the final layers that look like they can mess up the whole print. Lychee has a very different way of working on the objects, generated layers are very clean, and the whole software feels snappy and professional. I'll gladly wait for the 20 second ad! :)
The magic button is still useful when manually supporting. Turning off everything but optimise and bracing can help tidy up clusters of supports and brace at the same time.

Amazing video man.
Note: the Split function in the Preview sections lets you chose how you split the view based on the clipping bar: if you want to see only what is above, below the clipping bar, or the whole model. It doesn't split the model itself for export, it's just a visualization option :)

that magic button is awesome b/c as someone that is just getting into 3d printing, it is a great way to reinforce the importance of certain features over others when there is so much to learn at first. You might know about the importance of supports but not really understand rafts or why it is important to orient your model a certain way, for example.

I got to say that Lychee slider is well designed , and has the potential to be the best slicer on the market if it can resolve the constant crashes and bugs. Another thing if they can overcome that 500 meg data limit for files bigger than 500 megs , which I believe is the cause and reasons for the crashes. Once it over comes that barrier I believe that this will be the best slicer on the market. Current version 5.22 still has the same bugs and crashes.
As far as my understanding goes, the button 'Fit To Bed' only makes the object as big as possible in it's current roation/position. The reason why I'm here is because I am wondering if there's an option that I can click that will make the object as large as possible, no matter what orientation it's in!

Good idea. Personally, I found it very buggy. Oddly enough, this old version looks better than the new one
Watch out for the pixelated raft style: things with corners peel long before round shapes. So its often safer to use a cylinder as a base for each support and then size those bases so they merge with others to some degree (but not monolithically). Then you don't need a raft. Rafts can have too large a cross section creating a suction zone and the print starts to fail before it's even gotten too far. With separate cylinders as bases you can size them so there are little voids here and there to reduce the suction cross section.

The hollowing option does not actually hollow the model. It just calculates pixels from the edge of the model for each layer. That's why you can see the holes and the inside of the model. 3D hollowing is similar to Chitubox hollowing.

Question, at time hit 19:13 you show the "at scale" button and the model on a craft mat. Are those markings on the mat (1" blocks) in real size, would they work for a sudo real time comparison sake?
What do you do to cover the holes after ? Or what’s the easiest for most models?
And if I have 100 percent infill then holes are useless right as it’s a way just to drain excess resin?
Lychee Slicer is amazing. Printer and resin profiles are easy to manage, option to hide supports or models is useful, pixel perfect view essential for printing really small models and the infill options are superb. 1,8 mm wall thickness and 10% infill is enough to give a model enough strength in all directions. And I want to test the same infill percentage, but a bit larger inner structure diameter. From 1 mm to 1,5 mm. Also the measure function is essential when you want to print a ring or something when size is a factor.
And the subscription price is really dirt cheap. I would be OK paying much more than 2,49€ they ask for it, because it's really amazing piece of software.
One thing I don't like is when you are adding a hole while using an infill you can basically create an island by putting the hole below the infill starting point. So you have to check few layers to make sure the hole is not interfering with the infill.

For some reason i don't have the preview function on the lychee version I just downloaded. All it has at the top middle is three choices; layout, prepare, and export. Any suggestions? I would really like to be able to do the edits (holes) to my stl's.

On the ads... you don't have to wait. If you click on the add the timer button unlocks... you just have to then close the webpage it opens.

But it doesn't run on my aging notebook due to higher OpenGL ES requirements :-( PrusaSlicer can render even the progress within a layer on my hardware, so why do newer programs just require heavier/more recent graphics hardware?
Can you help? I own an Elegoo Mars 2 Pro. When I try print with a sliced file from Lychee, I get an error saying "Resolution not compatible" I have Lychee set for my printer and my resin. I don't know how to fix.
Just got my first sla printer. True, it's a second hand photon mono x and wash and cure with almost 45 liters of ethanol with 4 liters of resin for 750 €. I was amased what i can accomplish with this sw.
I'm running Lychee Slicer Pro 4.0.11. It doesn't have the preview function I saw in version 3.3.2 in this video. Have I not toggled something or did Lychee remove this feature?
How is the view moving around at 14:03? Not rotate but move view, especially Z axis.

Has anyone ever encountered unusually thick supports directly extended from the resin print? It's like a glitch and I have been getting then lately. It's a pain since I can only remove them by sanding. I don't see them in my slicer, only appears in the print. I use Lychee
I love Lychee Slicer. Their paid version is definitely worth it, unlike Chitubox's extremely overpriced paid version.

Awesome. I am brand new and am learning but the thing that confuses me is that since the model is technically printed upside-down, the drain holes you placed are on the top of the model. Is the proper workflow to remove the plate and turn it over and let the resin drain out that way?
Edit: I would still like confirmation, but it seems it is not so much about having resin drain out of the inside, but alleviating suction? Is this correct?
Shame that no one answered yet. I'd like to know too.

@@nairocamilo you need to have breath holes because when you are about to close the hollowed model and it's just a small hole left the resin will otherwise stay inside the model. Then you got alot of uncured resin inside the model. Think of it like a straw, hold a finger on the other side and the liquid will stay in the straw when you lift it out from the glass.
Is this still better in 2022? I'm just getting into resin printing for DnD and personal figurines with my anycubic mono and I want to start on a win.
I've done a few models but I find no point using inferior software starting out.
I just got a Elegoo Saturn and installed Chitubox. Then I saw Lychee and installed it. From the perspective of someone who is technically competent but has never used a SLA printer (or any 3D printer) before, I found Lychee to be much more intuitive and helpful *for me*. I don't know if I'll upgrade to the pro version, that will depend on how much I use the application. One thing that I wasn't cool with is that it appears you need to log into a cloud based system when you want to use this. Is this the case? I would like to eventually have a standalone system that is only used for printing, but where it's located will be a pain to run a network cable. For personal reasons I prefer not to use wireless.
I just downloaded LycheeSlicer 'free' version and that immediately was a huge red flag for me. If im installing software, which is 'free', I shouldnt need any kind of online account to be able to use it. I wasnt happy when windows firewall popped open to ask me to green light lychee to do whatever it wants on my network either.
By all means, let people know up front so they can avoid download/installing such software if they dont like that. Also the machine I usually use for my 3d printing/CNC work isnt always connected to the internet, which is also a pain. (Yes, I know I could use an internet connected machine and save the resulting files, etc. but that isnt the point)
@@ggamedev Their software, their rules. I didn't have a problem with it as it allowed me a slicer that actually worked and didn't crash a significant amount of the time. Lychee is just up front with the system requirements. Don't like it, don't use it, but don't dump on those of us who do use it and are completely happy with it.
@@kfeltenberger I didn't like it, and therefore I'm not using it. I in no way 'dumped' on anybody, either those who use it or those who produce it, from other comments and reviews it seems an excellent tool. I simply stated that there should be greater transparency BEFORE people download and install something, letting them know it wont work without a persistent online connection and an online user account. A better model might be to force a user account creation BEFORE someone can download it, at least then they would understand the requirement. Otherwise it feels like the company are trying to 'game' users into signing up, because they already invested time/effort and downloaded/installed something.
@@ggamedev Mango3D obviously disagrees with you and is producing a superior product that enjoys wide acceptance, use, and respect. If you don't like their model, then produce something better. Some people are just never satisfied and so should show the world "how it should be done". Go off, and show the world...
lychee doesnt have my printer supported. FlashForge foto 8.9 4k. But chitubox does.
I'm not crazy about the support braces being added after the fact. When it's real-time you know exactly where to put your support to get a brace.
1. Generate as you support
2. They group and turn bright orange if close enough to brace…
I think this might be lie-chee? Anywho, it definitely looks much better than the Chitubox slicer. Chitubox is actually both the firmware and the slicer, but it is severely lacking at this point in time. I’ll give Lychee a try, as I have some functional parts that I need to print and I can try another Groot. One can never have enough Groot. ;)
which resin printer would you recommend with a budget of around 200-250 ?

@@davidtikwa423 IIRC the difference is some colors of the printer carcass, and a carbon activated filter that is not immediately accessible to change when dirty.
Wish there was software that allowed you to scale an item by just choosing 1/6 1/12 1/18 1/32 1/35 1/44 1/75 for model making where you just choose the size and it automatically scales your item to that
We need an American company to make a printer as well as an actually good slicer.. the different scales would make a great feature
lol, after I use Lychee Slicer for a bit, I don’t need to think anymore to subscribe for 1 year plan, because it’s damn cheap & better than Chitubox in my opinion … :)
I'm a bit late to the game with this upload being 8 months ago I know....but I think Lychee slicer is good for learning and teaching about model supporting and orientation with the magic tool but I just prefer Chitubox and find it more friendly to use interface wise. It's a complete personal preference things but both programs are good and valid in their own ways.
I've found Prusa Slicer's auto orientation & SLA supports to be...really good lol. It's also Prusa Slicer so it just works. That's always nice haha
I've made hole and where are the pegs ???? CHitubox creates pegs next to the model. Why Lychee Pro is not doing that (at least I cannot find them on preview and I won't waste 100ml to print something with holes without pegs in same resin).

Automatic supports have no settings suitable for regular shapes and engineering parts, the ability to define a support pattern and density and "Paint" the required areas would make the slicer much more engineer friendly.
Only problem I have with Lycee is its reliance on Fusion 360
How did you come up with that?

@@LuxGamer16 You are correct, I erred while trying to cypher out new software, Software is not my strong suite. The pop up that on the right says if the problem persists fix it with NetFab, a message they recently added to with another 3rd party app.
While I was in Error I don't think I they should advertise those 3rd party apps on a pro sub account.
I will say that since I have learned how to use Lychee setting up my prints is significantly faster. Only issue I have now is moving the models around while trying to find the islands. I prefer how Chitubox does that part. Everything else in Lychee is superior though.
@@ericdevarney4089 ah ok i get it now. My workflow was a bit longer: used prusaslicer for auto-orient and auto-support, export to chitubox and verified with photonster file validator. I hope that when i try lychee, that my workflow will be reduced and improved haha
I have one of the newer MacBook pro's and Chitubox runs horribly on this machine. No matter what settings I change it's just a laggy mess.. So far Lychee has ran normally and fast. I guess the decision was made for me
Today we have found Lychee’s Achilles heel. Pro users not being able to launch the software due to a webserver being down is simply not good enough. Back to Chitubox and a refund request.

@@99Plastics Subscription is not payment - it is harrasement. I also do not like subscription system. When I buy a product (fridge, iron, couch) I pay and I have a product. I am not subscribing using of those. That's with software - I want to pay once and have it on my own. I do not need to pay all the time for "future" updates. When I will decide I will pay second time for update I will choose. So simple.

You glossed over the resin specification. Why?
It would seem to me that, given the popularity of the slicer, and of the more well-known printers, there ought to be databases of resin specifications. But not even a mention of this part of the process.
I definitely agree their should be resin presets but it’s also something that may work better with personal calibration. The light level, temperature, and humidity can effect each resin and printer combination differently.
If you want a database of resin specifications there is a google doc of a shit ton of settings

Lychee forces uncontrolled large support bases on you, effectively foisting a Raft upon you when you don't want one!
If I may, and it depends on your objective / target audience, but you may want to drop references to a competitive slicer. If this is a full walk through, it’s likely for ppl like me with little experience with a slicer so I have no metric at which those references are meant to paint a picture . Was still great for me just got confused in those moments haha
Big No for me. The 20 second nag screen with a click to continue button every time you export is a deal breaker for me. Also 6 euro's a month after conversion is a bit pricey.
It is difficult to follow your mouse moves. For example, when choosing on the options on the top row, you need to pause so the viewer can catch up on where the mouse is placed. Then, click the option button for the action. Speech is very clear, perhaps the pace could be slowed a fraction, or longer pauses between sentences. Otherwise a very comprehensive coverage. Definitely requires watching more than once.
I tried it and was very disappointed. It was almost unusable. Nothing worked well, and it was slow as molasses. I'll stick with Chitubox.
Very good presentation, however, I will not 'rent' software. Put a fair price on it and sell a license for it's use as has been the case since the beginning of home computing. Subscription models are pathetic.

I HATE any software that is Subscription-based, I, unfortunately, did not investigate much into this issue and bought the Elegoo Mars 2 Mono, now I am regretting my decision. Should have gone with the Prusa SLA instead. So if anyone of you guys is looking at this comment and don't want to invest in a subscription-based software then go for hardware that does not need such a sub-based SW. Just my opinion but the free versions of these SW's are very limited and no youtube is telling this.

Lychee sucks! It's consistent in ONE THING....It Constantly crashes. Yep, even the paid version. After a few months I had to just say no and remove it.
