My favorite part of Yoseka store is how they let you swatch every single ink bottle they sell! Whenever I go, I bring my own notebook so I can swatch on the paper that I like to use. Then, they can make you a sample bottle or sell you a full size if you fall in love with any of them. I literally cannot leave that store without spending hours each time. Such a lovely place!
The blue/green thing is the same in Korean and Japanese too. The green light on a stoplight is referred to as “blue light” even tho it’s obviously green and we have words for green. I literally never thought about it until a language teacher pointed it out to me.
That specific Chinese character 青 is ancient, and it could mean either green or blue depending on the context. But there's actually a specific character dedicated to the color green 绿. It's funny, because we say "青山绿水“: the mountains are green and so does the water, and we use two different characters to describe the same color (probably to avoid repetition, and probably because 青 sounds slightly more blue for it's also used to describe the sky "青天"). Generally speaking, characters dedicated to one color only are more commonly used and sounds more modern. In other words they are not "fancy". You'll probably learn 绿 for green and 蓝 for blue in a beginner Chinese class, but it's unlikely that they'll teach any beginners the character 青. Because it's ancient and fancy and not as commonly used except for in period dramas or art supplies. They want the products to sound pretty or more premium, and that's when they will choose characters like 青 instead of the regular characters (there are ways to make the regular green sound more fancy, but that's off topic). As a native Chinese speaker I myself oftentimes get confused by the ancient characters for colors. There are 丹 朱 赤 and they all vastly mean "red", though the exact tones are up to debate (I personally believe they're all just regular red, though I could be wrong 😅). They're actually more commonly used than you'll expect, just not as common as the modern, better-define words.
天青in ancien China means sky blue, but in ceramics it's more celadon in color (I'm not sure if it's deliberate or if it was just easier to get green glaze instead of blue). in Modern Chinese the character青is more associated with grass green. Things might have gotten loss in translation at some point ? This is my guess. :) That ink is beautiful~ and that Twisbi pen is gorgeous too! Nice haul!
Living vicariously through you. Thank you so much for sharing! I am totally in love with the feeling of the Logical Prime paper and the Rose Gold TWSBI is my next pen. Thank you for sharing the mini…definitely going with that one now!
If I was never allowed to use fountain pens again, I would probably just use Zebra Sarasa pens. The camel shade is so nice. Yoseka Stationery sounds amazing. I would love to be able to try all these high end pens and papers in person to see how I like them in real life!
Hi Liane! I don’t know if you’ve seen it yet, but Daisy from Yoseka gave you a shoutout at the end of her latest Catch Up video. It was funny watching this video and then watching hers and hearing both your perspectives about your visit to the store.
FYI u can charge (push ink into nib with the piston) a fp nib when it’s dry…u don’t have to let it sit nib down 😉 If u do that every time a nib hard starts u won’t use your beautiful TWSBI.
You were in the three best stores! The FPH has a solid selection but to be honest, unless you work with Jimmy, who is really good about educating on the pens and inks and has been very friendly to newbies I’ve sent to the store…. I wouldn’t recommend the experience. I’ve started recommending Yoseka for the customer experience. Daisy and her team are wonderful. I make the trek to Brooklyn every season now to just to browse and enjoy the space. This video was so sweet. Now I want to go shopping! 😊
Sweet Haul video! Glad you enjoyed your time in NYC. I haven’t been able to visit Fountain Pen Hospital because of their hours either, even being local to the area. Yoseka has been very reliable, and with their help I made my first gold nib pen purchase. Kinokuniya is very high traffic and with all the people and small space it’s very hard to navigate, but their Japanese stationary and ballpoint pen selection is probably the most extensive in Manhattan. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for your feedback! I think I would have enjoyed kinokuniya more if I wasn’t in a hurry before dinner. There was so much to take in and not enough time!
I’m so glad you posted this! I’m going to NYC in a couple weeks and plan to go to one of the first two stores. I will be too far from Yoseka but definitely want to go sometime.
Wow, Kinokunia store has a loads of pens there. Here in Th, they only have preppy. 😬 BTW, Life is a great choice. I have been using their notebooks for years and I adore them. 😊
@@lianelikes you have to drop a few drops if ink after filling a piston fillers. It will release the air and the pen will write straightaway. At @17:50. 😊
Looks like you had a blast. Thanks for the write out (you know shout out but written in your ticker - geez did I really need to explain that?) I feel bad you did get to tool around at Kinokuniya. I mentioned it to you because you love stationary. May be they have one in Seattle. Too bad about FPH, or may be it's a good thing it was closed. I'd loose my mind in there. Enjoy your purchases.
Oh no, Kinokuniya was lovely but I didn’t have enough time to review the whole place! I was also tired and hungry which didn’t help with the experience. I would love to go back when I have more time! I appreciate the suggestion! We have one in Seattle, but definitely not as immense as NYC.
Liane, your videos have made me realize that I need to swatch my inks. I have quite a few, and when I’m ready to ink a pen find the decision as to which ink to choose I am always overwhelmed. In fact it stresses me out. A swatch book with a bloop and a bit of writing-probably with a glass nib and my Sailor Hocoro-I may be able to relax and just choose my color? I’m going to try it. Wish me luck! 🤓
Good luck, Mary! Yes, it is a very relaxing, meditative process and I hope you enjoy the process! At the very least, you'll feel better and will get to know your inks!
@@lianelikes I did it! I was using a vacation day yesterday, so got them all done while listening to podcasts. I only have a few shades that are super close-and I now feel like there are only about 4 more inks I really want to at least swatch to see if I want full bottles. Through the process I have also re-learned why I love J. Herbin Rouille d’Ancre (and that I was using it in the 100% WRONG PEN, so NO WONDER I was ‘meh’ about it until I swatched it).
@@lianelikes I haven’t inked the pen yet, but am thinking definitely a stub or CI-just working on which. Pilot 1.0mm, or Nemosine 0.6mm probably. I have a Franklin-Christoph SIG F that might also be good…
The Chinese word Qing can mean green or blue, but generally it means a greenish blue color. Like the color of Celadon or greenish blue lakes (google lakes in China and sometimes you see how it is a very green color).
That Camel color Zebra Sarasa, I've been on such a long hunt trying to find a FP ink that replicates that color. Love it so much but feels impossible to find in bottled ink form >_
This is the video from Yoseka where Daisy explains a bit about the Tang Mi Se Blue and why it's named "blue". She mentions the color "celadon" and, if you look up celadon pottery, it really is a blue-green color...very like this ink. ruclips.net/video/nYvCy-EOfyI/видео.html

I didn’t even know that!!!!! I love Yoseka even more!!!
Daisy mentioned meeting you on the Yoseka video this week! You are now, officially, "RUclips Famous"!
Lol, yes!!! If Daisy mentions me, it is official. 😂

YES, totally. I just discovered that too in a recent Korean show I watched. I love these sorts of language discoveries...
I’ve only bought (online) from Yoseka, but really appreciate their ink offerings and polite, punctual customer service. A terrific shop.
Can't agree more. :)

Zebra sarasas were my ride or dies before I fell into the fountain pen hobby! I still keep them for something less fussy sometimes
