  • On the Spiegel & Holmes Show, Score football analyst Dave Wannstedt called up good friend and Hall of Fame quarterback Troy Aikman to discuss Bears quarterback Caleb Williams' performance in his rookie season. Aikman also weighed in on the Bears' coaching search and reflected on how he overcame his frustrating 1-15 rookie season with the Dallas Cowboys in 1989.

    Years ago I saw Troy Aikman at a Football Camp... I remember how much larger he was than I expected... It was a camp for highschool kids and he spent the majority of his time throwing passes and interacting with the young players on the field. He genuinely loves the game. I'm happy he was able to have an extended career involving broadcasting...

    Great feedback from Troy on the ideal coaching situation. It makes sense to have that offensive minded coach who calls plays so the OC doesn't get poached every two years. Troy's take on the coaching staff being loyal to Jimmy Johnson was eye opening. It's ESSENTIAL the HC chooses his own staff (not piece mailed by upper management) so the probability of loyalty is much higher, which is needed to build solid locker rooms and culture. The question is, will the McASSkeys/Warren get out of the way and let Poles hire the next coach?! I doubt it. When George is involved, you can expect a train wreck

    And also many of the great quarterbacks are not too proud to take many short completions after short completions until suddenly boom then the deep one pops, you gotta build up a rhythm that keeps their defense guessing. Sometimes they are going to get gas right and you have to take the check down or better yet just a short pass over the middle well try not to put your receiver in too much harms way.
    I believe that many short passes slowly pushing it down the field also opens up the run game as well as the deep pass

    He’s right about the sacks and holding the ball too long.
    He has 56 sacks already. According to PFR, Caleb has faced pressure on 23.2% (22nd out of 34 QBs) of his dropbacks. The league average is 21.7%. Why is he near league average, but leading the league in sacks?
    While he ranks 9th in passing attempts, there is another stat that he is 2nd worst in the league at. He has the second worst pressure to sack rate at 46% with only Will Levis being worse. The league average and median are around 30%. The top 6 players in the league are between 11% and 21%.

    • @Handlemcdaniel
      @Handlemcdaniel 14 часов назад

      Sometimes Williams holds it too long and some of the sacks are mostly his fault, for sure.
      Also, though, how is "pressure" defined? Because Williams often has guys running at him unblocked or has his own linemen backed into his lap.

    Is it a lack of timing from the shotgun? I’m gonna have to review some film but what I’ve sort of seen his guys like Caleb fields not wanting to take the first open guy they see and instead wanted to stretch the field more instead of just picking up a 5 yard to 7 yard pass over the middle even if it is into a window. You see most of the great quarterbacks don’t usually pass open a wide-open receiver on a normal Drive so they can find a receiver that’s deeper down the field.
    I think Troy Aikman is biting his tongue because I’ve seen that a lot with Caleb Fields and Justin Williams where there’s a tight window where they can immediately fit the ball in for a completion if the pass is on point but they neglect to take that opportunity they look For another receiver and then take a sack.

    • @ElevatorUrinator
      @ElevatorUrinator 20 часов назад

      And my thing is clearly since you’re taking so many sacks it’s not easy for these wide receivers to get open and you don’t have a grade percentage of having an array of open receivers to choose from so you should take the very first opportunity that arises in terms of any window opening for a completion the first one that arises unless you must push it down field because of Clock because the time is running out.

    Troy Aikman knows exactly what he’s talking about. Caleb doesn’t view a sack like it’s an interception or a turnover so he’s fine with taking the sack because it doesn’t impact the numbers he deem as important. Caleb can learn a lot from Bagent because this offensive line is not bad. Bagent would’ve taken way less sacks behind this same line and the Bears would definitely be in the playoff hunt. Bears made a big mistake just awarding the starting job.

      @raprevenue1922 23 часа назад +2

      @ bagent out played Caleb in camp and the receivers actually were calling for him to start. The 5 games bagent played in last season he only was sacked 5 times. With the coordinator that was fired from the raiders who might I add was pounding the table to bench JF because bagent was a better quarterback. Caleb should’ve sat this year. You’re looking at stats but if you were watching the games Caleb doesn’t do anything in the 1st half’s. The 2nd half he’s getting these numbers because of soft coverages being played because the teams have comfortable leads. This guy has set the record for sacks and still has 4 more games to go 😂 who’s really delusional?
