    • @marsinvader9078
      @marsinvader9078 5 месяцев назад +9

      For people wondering, before the introduction of reusable detachable magazines, the magazine was within the gun itself, the bullets were secured on a little piece of metal (the stripper clip) and inserted directly into the gun. This is where the term "clip" as slang for a gun's magazine came from

    In college we had a club, officially called TASC - Technology Animation Studies Club, better known by club members as Pokemon Club. Basically we would all gather in a big room and play Pokemon, Smash Bros, Mario Party, etc. Never did do any actual animation study so it's nice to get some real education on the subject.

    I love the snappy animation and gamefeel of OG RE4, it makes the game feel great when the animations end right as Leon becomes actionable again. Newer games (including RE4R) have an ambiguity to the controls that comes off as being more sluggish, though of course more realistic. By this I mean reloads that don’t let you fire the moment (or soon after) the clip goes into the pistol, or acceleration in walking.
    I understand these things are added for a more realistic looking game, but I strongly prefer the balance RE4 hits between being realistic enough and being snappy in game feel.
    Lovely video.

    This game might be #1 when it comes to striking a balance between realistic, cinematic visuals and good old fashioned arcade game design. Most games with animations this good lack depth, but this game has plenty. Capcom are arguably the best developers working at the moment for this reason.

    that reload Leon does on the bolt action rifle is, while more interesting, completely impossible with the scope mount. Stripper clips (the bit of metal Leon throws to the side at the end of the reload) have to be inserted straight down from the top, not at a 45 degree angle like shown in game. in reality the realod would be like the version of the bolt action in the remake, loading single rounds in to the top

    4:46 quick correction, Leon damage animations have 4 variations depending on where the attack comes from, the one in the video is played when he is attacked from the front, but there are 3 more variations for other directions, 2 for sideways attacks (which are mostly the same but mirrored) and one for when he is attacked from behind. A fantastic look into RE4's animation. I've always thought the original ('05) felt more "snappy", for lack of a better word, because it didn't rely on realistic transitions. Seems I'm wrong @10:23 though, technically you're not being delayed in gameplay but seeing the extra frames in animation makes me think it's less responsive (even though it's proven not to be).

  • @wertyjess
    @wertyjess 5 месяцев назад +28

    Maybe it was out of the scope of the video, but I was expecting you to touch a bit more on how the animations, specially reload and firing, feel as gameplay functions (since they are "stats" that can change).
    In the original, reload and firing+recoil animations would pretty much 1-to-1 match the weapon's current stats, so it always felt very natural and intuitive when you could start firing again, it felt very fluid.
    In the remake, these animations don't necessary match the stat, which means Leon will just stand around for an instant before you can aim or shoot again. You can test this with the handgun reload animation, where Leon reloads then puts his arms to the side (pretty much to wait for the reload time stat to complete), then starts aiming again. Not much of a big deal, but I enough of a thing for me to notice that it didn't feel "right".
    This one's unrelated to RE4, but RE8 also had this problem with the regular shotgun, where after firing it Ethan deals with the recoil pretty much instantly and starts aiming again, but there's an arbitrary wait time before firing again until you upgrade the rate of fire lol.

    • @wertyjess

    • @VideoGameAnimationStudy

      Yeah you're right, probably a bit out of the scope of the video. It's a shame cos when I get an idea, the production time rack up and up the longer it gets, and then the video takes ages to get out.
      But thank you for the insightful and interesting thoughts! I'll be sure to take that feedback on 🫶

    • @SnakeTheBoss13
      @SnakeTheBoss13 4 месяца назад

      With the handgun, I thought it was weird but what's happening is that if you reload a non empty magazine, Leon actually takes some time to put the old magazine away.
      Unfortunately, due to the camera position, it's really difficult to see, so it feels like Leon is just waiting around

    The motion capture in the original GC version is miles ahead of the one in the remake.
    This is especially true in the cutscenes.
    Actually, the 4remake doesn't even use motion capture (like RE2 remake for ex.) for the cutscenes. They use an animation database and just focus on close ups and quick cuts.
    Drastic downgrade in this area (for cost purposes most likely) compared to the amazingly directed and animated original.

  • @ArchOfficial
    @ArchOfficial 5 месяцев назад +18

    The "cartridge" that flicks out of the rifle during reload is called a "clip". They hold rounds together to aid in loading magazines, be it internal such as here or external.
    Don't call a magazine a clip, though.

    • @TheRealBatabii
      @TheRealBatabii 5 месяцев назад

      I always confuse magazine with clip, but also cartridge with bullet

    • @ArchOfficial
      @ArchOfficial 5 месяцев назад +10

      @@TheRealBatabii Magazines hold ammo for firing, clips hold ammo for loading. In the rifle reload, ammo is being loaded from a clip into an internal magazine. Most magazines are removable, though.
      A cartridge (or 'round') is an assembled casing that holds a bullet, propellant and ignition device.
      A bullet is the hurty bit that flies out.

    The biggest differences I saw in the Remake had to do with the guns and the martial arts. With powerful guns like the shotgun or handcannon, Leon's reaction to the recoil was significantly exaggerated in the original. For example, the shotgun recoils so hard that Leon's practically pointing it upward between shots, which really sells the feeling of power that it would have, but it's a highly unrealistic reaction for a trained shooter. The same goes for the handcannon. In the Remake, he does a much better job of keeping the weapon pointed towards enemies, which helps the characterization of Leon as a super professional government agent, as opposed to the characterization of the shotgun as an almighty beast that's hard to control. Reloads are also more realistic in the Remake, doing a much better job of showing how those guns actually function, even if I will always miss the clunkiness and metallic sound design of the original Rifle reload animation.
    On the martial arts, the entire cast got some new moves, owing to the more robust melee mechanics of the remakes. Leon kept his iconic roundhouse kick and spinning back kick, and notably, they implemented some sort of dynamic animation targeting. In your video, you can see that Leon will kick lower if the enemy is close to the ground, and he'll kick more at a head level if they're standing full height. This was quite remarkable to me, and leads to moments where you kick enemies in the leg sometimes, which is totally fine, that hurts! There's also so much more to the knife now that you can slash as well as stab as well as parry, not to mention the actually playable knife fight sequence you can have with Krauser later in the game, complete with unique melee attacks. I wasn't expecting Leon to hit Krauser with a stylish 540 kick that wasn't in the original, but I was certainly happy to be surprised. In the Mercenaries, Hunk has a new attack using a hidden wrist blade, which wasn't in the original at all; but it was in The Mercenaries 3D for the 3DS, meaning they knew that if they added new attacks for Hunk they needed to reference other games with Hunk in them. Wesker's Mayhem mode in the Mercenaries shows him beating the hell out of enemies in a way similar to his depiction in RE5, but curiously enough, even closer to his son's attacks in RE6, who was inspired by the RE5 depiction. I found this especially fascinating because Wesker's attacks in the original RE4 are not really present in the remake, but he still feels completely true to himself. They really stepped up the animations to make the Remake's combat feel more realistic than the original, while paying close attention to the characters performing those moves to make sure that the new stuff was consistent with who they are, using eclectic sources.

    6:00: Not unless that pistol has the recoil of a shotgun. And if it does, it _really_ shouldn't have been made into a pistol. If your arms aren't strong enough to absorb the force of the firearm's recoil, you need to brace it against your shoulder or something. If Leon wasn't made of polygons, he'd fuck up his wrist.

    Nothing wrong with realism, but Resident Evil shouldnt be realistic or weighty.

    Gonna be honest, I hate Leon's updated texture, especially the hair. It's too detailed and detracts from the haircut that made all of us swoon over him back in the day. I had the same problem going from Sims 2 to Sims 3 - sometimes artistic style is better than hyperrealism.

      @purpleheart3000 that's fair enough, I've seen lots of comments online that developers these days have somehow lost the ability to do convincing 'see through' textures like they used to.

      I was gonna say the same thing, they keep popping and moving around...is ok if you take a hit or something but just turning around doesn't mean you get a full blown air fan ... no one does... should over on a hit, quick jump etc..

    Sadly, realistic and elaborate animations don't always translate into good gameplay. The remake feels so sluggish to play compared to the original even tho the OG was using tank control. It takes remake Leon like 3 seconds to accelerate and decelerate, he has a giant turning radius, and his movement is constantly interrupted by the smallest thing. I gave up on The Last of Us and AC Valhalla for the same reason. It's sad to see capcom going this route as well considering they are the company that prioritizes gameplay over anything else. Movement inertia is just pure cancer to modern gaming.

      I don't know if I'd go that far, realistic movement can feel good if you know how the movement works and use it how the game wants you to and is built around it. I can understand the concerns for Leon in the remake though, as this isn't how he felt before.

    Re 4 Remake is much better and authentic experience. It proves that tank controls is just overcompensation to make the game scary.
    Re 7, Village, Re 2 Remake and Re 4 Remake are far more tense than any tank control RE game.

    Remake is more dark and half the game and half the fun. Crapcom can't make a decent remake after RE1.

    And not a single word about latency in those "fancy new tech animations"? Like, blending states and all sort of mixing animations techniques are always comes with some sacrifices of responsiveness for looks. It's pity that you did such a video and not mentioned such an important flaw in modern vidya games. Just compare side by side both games and how movement in those feels. Snappy and precise in og and wobbly-bobbly skating on an ice in the remake. I personally think that animators most of the time "overdo" their job, working on AAA titles, while ucompetent art and gameplay directors allow them to go wild. Instant response is always should be the top priority if we're talking about great experience. Somehow animators knew that before, but forget about it completely nowadays.
    But since GaMeRs most of the times don't even bother - no wonder industry became a money stamping dogshit over 20 years. Visuals sell, well crafted gameplay - don't.
    Anyways, thanks for the vid, but certainly i'd love to see more deeper dive and more professional approach to such topics, since you're familiar with the industry and animation.

      I’m guessing it’s the inconsistent headshots? Leon turning into Fumble Bumble every time he gets hit and staggers? Movement which is supposed to be smooth, but ends up being kind of janky?
      At least that’s what I feel.
