Dear Norm and Tina. Thank you so much for making these videos. My wife and I have been several times in Portugal. We live in Etobicoke, Ontario. Last year we visited Tavira. Loved this town. We learned there is a place called Canadian Village near Tavira and Cabanas. We would like to explore expending next winter in the Algarve. We would like to know more about renting an apartment for one month. If we are not mistaken, you mentioned Luna Solaqua. Can you please tell how in advance can one room apartment be rented to secure a place to stay. Your assistance is greatly appreciated. All the best.

What I've seen in the Algarve many years ago, someone would call it a miracle. People coming for long stay has been happen for sometime. Look at so many thousands of houses they bought at Vilamoura area, or Vale do Lobo, Quinta do Lago and so on. It started many moons ago! I met a gentleman from the UK that used to arrive every winter for a long stay and that's normal, but the incredible thing is that he was wearing crutches on arrival and afer a couple of weeks he could walk without them. Miracles that a good weather can do! Cheers

Hello Tina and Norm, my wife and I just finished our 3-week trip to the Algarve and loved every minute of it. Even the rainy days were great. Thank you again for all the great information you share on your videos as it made it easier for us to experience a wonderful vacation. We spent part of the time in Albufeira and part in Lagos. We had ocean view at both places and found the kitchens very well equipped including soap, a brand new sponge and the first location even had an egg flipper. 😀We walked a lot, used the bus service (Onda) in Lagos, rented a car for 3 days at both locations and used Uber 18 times. I was surprised how much cheaper the Uber rides are in Portugal. From the Albufeira - Ferreiras train station to our hotel by the beach it was less than 5 Euros.
We flew to Lisbon, took the metro to the Lisboa-Oriente station where you can choose to take a train or a Flix Bus to Albufeira. The train costs around 25 Euros per person but you can buy tickets up to 60 days in advance at great discount at the cp website or using the cp app.
As we look forward to repeating the experience again next January I want to share two negative things people may encounter: it is common for people to smoke in the outdoor seating area of restaurants. If you are bothered by people smoking near you this may be an issue. The other is that at Albufeira, Tavira and Lagos we had people approach us for money and sometimes they were pretty persistent and did not seem to want to leave us alone even though I said I was not giving them money. So, just don't be surprised if you encounter these things during your Algarve travels.
Other than that we are in love with the Algarve. Thanks again and keep up the great videos.

So informative! I love your videos and wish that we "oldsters" who probably have 10 years on you could go to Portugal for the winter. Thank you Tina and Norm, definitely we can learn from your contents. Last year we flew to Lisbon, rented a car and drove to the Algarve for a 2 weeks stay. Lisbon is very hectic and took a while to get in and out including renting and returning car at the airport. It was a nightmare. As for standard shift, I love driving standard so saved some money with rental. Anyhow, enjoy the sun, weather has been pretty good here in southern Ontario ❤🍁🇨🇦

I see many people are a bit hesitant to use the P4 car rental agencies, but they really are amazing deals. It's a very casual/informal set-up compared to other major European or North American systems, but I have never had an issue.
We have always had good luck pre booking at P4

The eggs that you're talking about are really the healthiest because the orange color is the lutein that comes from the chickens eating healthy food like bugs and grasses! Very interesting about the Shelf stable eggs!
Most of Europe do not refrigerate eggs either.
Here in the Netherlands eggs are never refrigerated.

We bought the same frying pan when we were in Continente!! €6!. You can buy fresh milk in Pingo doce in a refrigerated cabinet as we did because we hated the UHT milk, I’m sure you’ll find it in Continente too. We were there summer 2023.

We drink PG Tips tea and it is available in Algarve, as well as 'Kaffeesahne' which is equivalent of half & half. Thanks for showing this to us and thanks for another very useful video. I will look for Kaffeesahne in Madeira; I could not find 10% coffee cream so made my own coffee cream using milk and whipping cream. Rather disgusting and artery clogging if I do say so myself.

The bright orange colour of egg yolks can result from laying hens being free range. Its possible that, if they are laid by battery hens, the hens may have been fed something to create the colour, in the same way as farmed salmon are fed a colouring agent.

My sister and brother in-law have wintered in the Algarve for more than 10 years. They have found since that dirty word COVID,prices for accommodation have increased dramatically and will not going back after this year. They only seek out rentals through locals ,to get lowest price.

Back in the 60’s, if you got an 18 degree January day in Miami, a lot of women would wear their ‘fur’ jackets as there wasn’t many opportunities to show them off! Maybe the Portuguese are enjoying a chance to show off their winter jackets.
It's not for show, it's because they are cold, and they are VERY surprised by the t-shirts that the English wear!
Thank you for the great tips. There are advantages to being there in the winter. Namely, much less crowded, no summer heat waves and everything is more affordable. When I was in Lagos a few summers back the restaurants were all packed and, without reservations, we were left to wander hungry for any place that would take us. Not fun! As for the winter jackets in warm weather, it might be a genetic vulnerability. I'm Canadian born with Portuguese parents and I'm still a super wimp when it comes to the cool weather 😂 Take care and keep up the great work.

Quick question Tina and Norm. Do you get supplemental insurance on your rental car to cover accident liability ? I'm always scared of liability with car rentals even with credit card protection!
We have decided if we rent a car 🚗 in the future we will take their insurance, as the credit card insurance isn’t too clear 🤔

Standard cars!!! Ughhh 😮 Very few know how to drive 🚗 those here. Two beds 🛌 in a cruise ship 🚢 can always be made into one. We arrive with one made and request two separate beds...first world 🌎 problems.
Having grown up in the UK 🇬🇧 we learned to drive on standard cars 🚗 but way more prefer automatic Cheers 🇨🇦☕️🇵🇹

"huge upgrade" to Automatic on a rental is a relative amount. I have rented automatics in Portugal and the upgrade is really not very much. Maybe 10-15% more than the base amount. For me, I am on new roads, with lots to pay attention to, so having one less thing to think about with a rental (i.e. the gears!) I am happy to pay for the upgrade to Automatic. Hi Norm and Tina, just got back to US after stay in Algarve for 5 weeks. We love it there. Hopefully my wife and I will go back next winter for 10 weeks. We would like to look into flying to Florence Italy from Faro and back. Flights and car rental are very reasonable. Would you ever consider visiting another European country while staying in Portugal?

We had friends that were transferred to Portugal for a year for work. They travelled all over Europe with no problems. Just be aware that luggage size and weight limits on European airlines are much less that those in the US. Plus, Europe has great train service. Have a fun time!
Non stick frying pans are made of Teflon which is a carcinogen. Best to avoid this type of pan altogether! Stay safe ❤❤❤

We are going to be renting a car in Faro the 1st week of March and wondering do we need to purchase extra insurance or will the coverage through are credit card be enough.
I was in Vilamoura in November and the place was deserted! The were rolling up the sidewalks as the end of November came closer. We had a lovely apart-hotel with a well-equipped kitchen and lovely grounds. It was a lovely break away.
There are thousands of residents from the UK who live in the Algarve permanently in addition to the ones that just go for the winter. 👍

I also seen you both in shops .we live here in in albufeira its alot warmer here than last February it was going down to 15 c insde where as its 19-20c presently. We were in uk 2weeks ago up north it was -6 at night and some days no warmer than -3 .i had to buy thermal gloves as walking around for over 20 mins with normal gloves and your hands started to freeze. Hope you enjoy your time in albufeira. Have you tried the bella vista sports bar .lovely place.,which has just been extended that has a mix of locals and afew tourists. The prices are not tourist prices .The cottage has moved back up the top end of the strip they do a wonderful breakfast. They are closed till end of this month .Have you been upstairs in the continente on the new outside terrace ?

Eggs and washing vs. not washing is long related to salmonella and vaccination of birds. There is no right or wrong.
What might be true, is that on a per capita basis, there is far less food poisoning, salmonella etc in countries with stricter protocols around washing eggs, dealing with food handling situations etc.
In many decades in North America, I had food poisoning once... at my own hand, having mishandled poultry and other food.
Move to some areas of Europe or Asia, you can have this with some regular frequency due to lack of handling practices and food safety. It's ... six and a half, a dozen of the other. When we live in Europe, we buy our eggs at teh market and stick them in the fridge out of habit, not necessity I suppose.
We also carry a good prescription of azythromicyn, in case you get sick.
It really comes down to farming practices and the big egg farms are pushing limits of cleanliness and animal husbandry. In Japan the egg farming is so tightly managed you can safely eat raw eggs. North America washes eggs to sanitize them and remove possible salmonella contamination. Other countries have tighter laws about farming so don’t have the same need for washing.

My husband and I from Winnipeg, Canada are in Portugal for 2 months. We also decided to try this as a result of your videos. We are staying at a wonderful apartment in Ferreiras that is very reasonably priced. We often walk into Albufeira but also take the Giro bus in regularly. As we haven't rented a car yet our biggest frustration has been trying to figure out the regional buses to get around to the towns along the coast. I have reviewed many websites but have not found anything that provides the necessary info easily. Do you have any hints to help us with the bus system?

You sound as though you are English - and that's how we do our eggs here too - also, mainly brown eggs but you can get white as well - or blue!

We don’t use cell service
Have been to Portugal many times for extended stays. Never needed to rent a car, as the bus systems are excellent and reach any area you want to explore. You can rent bicycles as well and if you take one for a month the cost is quite inexpensive.
We are enjoying not having a car and starting to use Bolt , Uber and the local buses John Cheers 🇨🇦☕️🇵🇹

Thanks to all your great travel commentary I'm now contemplating a trip to Portugal this spring. How are prices there for groceries along with the exchange on CAD$? Is it ok to use a canadian credit card for daily purchases or would you recommend another method? Great suggestion on NordVPN as you never know who might be "eavesdropping" on your information. You mentioned donating various purchases to charity shops: we have stayed at the same apartment hotel in Albufeira for many years and for no charge we leave a box of things we don’t want to drag back home in the hotel’s storage room and 9 months later it is there ready for another winter. Some friends in other facilities pay nominal fees for the service.

It was fine and we did have a stove and microwave. However we're curious about the area of your apartment hotel which seems much more centrally located than where we were. They do Bus tours for the day to Seville from most hotels , or you could take the bus and stay a couple of nights 🙂
