- There's a lot to unpack in the House-passed Build Back Better Act-from its investments in child care to how it lowers health care costs while saving taxpayer dollars.
On Wednesday, December 1st, Rep. Katie Porter used her whiteboard to break down what's in the bill and how it helps families.
It is a real shame that Cable News will not explain this to the public. Thank you, Katie .

It's way casual and meaningful and as a bonus, the politician will know you (if the meetings are less attended) Attend a Caucus. By law, they must publicize the date and time when they'll be available to the public (in reality, they work for you, their boss.) Hope to see your name on a ballot somewhere.

I wish they would include college free tuition. More and more jobs need a college or trade school degree. Let's invest in our people not just on the preschool end but after highschool too. A person with a college or trade school education, on average earns more in their lifetime, is less likely to live in poverty, end up homeless. That means less social programs being used.

This is great. I wish every presidency had scorecard for what was achieved and minimum requirements, like we all have to meet for our jobs. I have never understood why any of our Representatives in the senate or the house should be able to stand there and say they do not know what is in a bill they make $174,000 a year they should at least be able to do a little bit of reading for their constituents. A paperback book has 490 something pages in it. you would think to read a freaking bill that that should be part of their job. I see them all the time get up there and give their speeches and say totally incorrect things that are not in the bill or else misrepresent the things that are in the bill it's just straight-up ignorant. It's really upsetting to me that I would know more of what's in the build back better bill then Marjorie Taylor Greene or Lauren boebert and even some Democrats that I've heard have gotten the contents of that bill wrong sorry for the rant, it's just beyond belief.

The push back is from those who feel helping others is not their problem but don’t have a problem with their taxes subsidizing profitable companies and tax breaks to the few who don’t need or deserve them.
Rep Porter is smart and a precious gem. Keep on keeping on.
First thought: Hopefully, particularly in California where this is rampant, prisoners who are used as firefighters will benefit from the increased wage instead of being paid nearly nothing (like $1/hr) and that since they now have experience with this type of work can be hired by fire fighting departments despite their previous incarceration.
Also, hopefully, universal pre-K will help develop more socially-adjusted children rather than just more competitive ones.
Housing . . . re-purpose abandoned shopping malls and strips into affordable housing units. The buildings are already built, plumbed and wired. In my town and many others, there are also a lot of empty buildings that once housed other types of businesses that could be used.
I so admire Katie Porter. She's intelligent, ambitious and goodhearted. A true public servant ! We need more like her in Congress.

It is unconscionable that Medicare coverage for dental and vision were cut. Caving to vote for the BIF without BBB was a huge mistake. Now, with zero leverage in the Senate, I would be shocked if many more of these blocks survive Republican Senators Manchin and Sinema. And even then there is no guarantee that they'd vote for it still. They got the big corporate giveaways they wanted with BIF.
Hopefully bad actors will lose their seats and the righteous ones will implement new laws even better than before

Now that we've taken care of families and communities, May We Please focus on our elders. $639. a month from Social Security is social poverty, a financial prison. The base minimum for those with no pension or other income seriously needs to be increased. $639. a month doesn't allow for vehicle insurance, so we lose the independence of being able to transport ourselves to the store etc. If something goes wrong on our home it leaves nothing for repairs. It's like we're being forced out of our homes that we spent a lifetime working and paying for.
The Federal Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is $794 (with a COLA in Jan). If someone has $639 Soc Sec, that is probably Social Security Disability or Soc Sec Retirement and their Medicare premium is being taken out of it. Medicaid (which is quasi State and Federal) in nearly every state will cover the Medicare premiums (program is called Qualified Medicare Beneficiary~QMB), so that the person has at least $794 take-home.
So if you know a disabled or retired person who is not currently utilizing this benefit, please help them to apply.
