Been brewing for years and stuck around anyway, this is the best video I’ve seen as far as information per minute. Wish it was around when I started.
Missed you braj! Cheers PR!
@@HOMEBREW4LIFE hello there. Time ago I saw a system that I dont remember the name. Everything came in a big clear plastic bag tbat you attach to barrel and then you have beer. Have you seen anything like it?
As with most folks, I watched many videos before attempting to brew beer myself. Yours is easily the best intro video on yewtoob, short and direct, without skipping any steps. Most of the other videos still go through the siphoning process, and I could not understand why. I totally agree with you on plastic fermenters with a spigot. After stocking up on fresh apple cider during a fall trip to Michigan, I bought the complete cider kit from Northern Brewer. The cider kit includes almost all the equipment needed to make beer, so I took the next step. All I needed was a secondary fermenter, and I went with the plastic Big Mouth Bubbler. I recently brewed my first batch of beer using a Chimay Grande Reserve Extract clone recipe from Austin Homebrew. On my first attempt, it came out EXACTLY like my favorite beer, Chimay Blue. At $75, the Chimay recipe kit costs more than most, but the end product has a retail value of $500. One thing I did differently from most brewers (and the directions) is I skipped the ice bath. Instead, I put a few gallons of water in the freezer about two hours before I started cooking. By the time the wort was fully cooked, the bottles were nearly frozen. Adding this superchilled water to the wort quickly brought the temp close to the target level. I also had a gallon of water that was completely frozen, and I let that bob around in the wort until it reached 80 degrees, which took very little time.
You sir are my favorite person on RUclips. PROST.
Thx for the kind words, cheers Ron!
I haven't brewed for about 10 years. After weeks of searching for the real world basics of the new methods, here you are. thanks. You saved me from making an embarrassing video.
You got this scotty!
I've never made beer, but have made wine for a while now, and when it comes ro cleaning glass carboys, or cleaning anything. Sterox. Cleans so fast with zero scrubbing its insane.
I’ve been eyeing this Northern Brewer kit for a while but wasn’t sure if it’s a good move for my first batches. I’m sold now. Recently subbed to the channel and love the content
Sounds like you made a good choice! Cheers Carmine!
NB amber kit came out very good for first beer (simple one hop addition), loved it and bought 2 other kits dead ringer and kama citra. Unfortunetely those last 2 came out way too bitter which led me to research hop utilization at certain temperatures. For those type of kits id recommend not doing the flameout hop additions if you will be cooling in the sink with ice and wait until you get wort cooled to under 170. Cheers
i have brewed that exact kit and it tastes great. my first brew ever. if not for my son dumping the fermenter a day b4 bottling it would have been great. needless to say I've actually brewed this twice. the directions are close to idiot proof too. cheers.
Sounds like a heck of a day! Cheers Heather :)
dude I wish this video was around when I started for real! I had to figure all this out all the way down to getting the inkbird and going with Kegs! Keep it up CH!
Glad I could help!
I got a inkbird but had to get a diff type of temp controller that has 2 ends, cuz I got a frezzer for my big ass 30lts kegs and for a fridge that doesnt work as it should but kindly enought cools in btw 60- 80 F, so... not even mad of getting scammed on that, cheers
Awesome video, thanks
This is a great primer for first timers, CH! Screw glass fermenters. Yes start with food grade plastic/extract (when you upgrade to stainless and all grain, use the old fermenter for grain storage: no waste!) Kegging was the biggest leap forward in terms of quality of life for me too. All grain doesn't have to be hard, it's way cheaper and somewhat tastier, but it does require more total time and a big ass kettle. I like kveik, it is very convenient, and an excellent first yeast, but the other strains are just too fun/tasty to neglect. Once you get rolling and have a pipeline going, it's not a big deal to let the beer take its time and develop flavor.
Great feedback Tim! Yeah this was my first time with dry kviek yeast and I'm more than impressed with how it turned out. Cheers!
HAHA, great video. I am in the process of watching as many of these brewing videos as possible. Thanks for translating the "lingo"
I have never commented on RUclips but as a guy who has watched too much and never made a batch as it has seemed too confusing... I have been on the fence. You have presented everything in a manner I can follow quick and easy. No conflicting info to be had keeping it easy to follow. Thanks so much. You guys are the best!
thx for the kind words, cheers Adam!
wife bought me exact kit from NB couple years ago... loved it, went down the rabbit hole and just upgraded everything to do all grain
I highly recommend BIAB, cheers!
Finally someone that includes Kveik yeast for beginners, excellent yeast for fermenting without temp control, good video
I think kveik should come every kit!
Probably the most comprehensive over view for the new brewer I've ever seen. And I've seen a few. Cheers😎👍
I wish I had this system when I started!
@@HOMEBREW4LIFE and I retired my glass carboy ages ago after ," the incident". 😱
Honestly so nice to see someone actually challenging Joshua Weissman. He acts like he knows everything about everything. But you can tell a lot of the time he's just done an hour of googling before making the video. He's still pretty good but it's refreshing to have someone show that he isn't a master of everything
he know's a ton about production... not so much about beer
Wish I had these cliff notes years ago! Great video, Braj.
You and me both!
Yup. I still use the original plastic fermenter that came with my first kit years ago. Lasts forever. Unlike glass.
1 gallon glass growlers are cool, but the bigger they are.. the bigger the liability. Cheers!
Where was this vid two years ago when I started brewing! Great job! You will help a lot of people just getting into the hobby. Thanks! always enjoy your channel, Hoppy hour too.
I wish this system was around 6 years ago when i first started lol
Pretty much a perfect video for the beginner. Great work. I also enjoyed your 'this is my first taste of beer ever' face at the end. Cheers!
Cheers James!
Love the no BS bouncy ball... Great work, Cheers!
Cheers Dan!
Love the Back to Basics video! I still use my Northern Brewer kit to this day!
hell yeah jus, i still have my og bucket lol
Never thought of cutting boil time in half. Pure genius!
Extract brewing was all I did for a long time, very easy way to get started in beer making. Definitely agree about getting into kegging asap. Although I naturally carbonate my beer in kegs just like with bottles, allows me to store large amounts of beer on hand. 8 on the floor 2 in the keezer
Naturally carb with corn sugar just like bottles?
@@HOMEBREW4LIFE Well Im using dme, but the same ratios. Pour the mixture in then the beer, and as always purge the keg of air and make sure the lid is sealed.
@delreydavid I used to bottle, and I used to do 5 gallon batches...It takes quite a while to bottle a 5 gallon batch, Im making 20 gallon batches now. Siphoning 20 gallons to 4 corny kegs might take me about an hour, how long would it take you to bottle that? Oh and cleaning 4 corny kegs takes a few minutes, to clean and bottle 20 gallons would take all day I imagine.
Lastly I'll add I do all that on my brew day since I save yeast, and my brew day takes about 4-5 hours.
@delreydavid I've been following this channel a while, so I comment fairly often. What I meant was I have 2 sanke kegs I use as fermenters, and I leave a small amount of liquid in the bottom which allows me to reuse the yeast.
I think what you're referring to I used to use as well, requires pressure from the bottom of the inside of the bottle for it to fill. I also used 22oz bottles, as well as the sierra nevada 24oz bottles. A corny keg on ebay can be found for about the same price as a case of bottles
@delreydavid That's weird the bottles are that way, when I bottled I always had some that were low at the end.
hell yeah! The ultimate beginners guide to making great beer at home. Cheers braj!
Brew on Jules!
hahah Just googled in the morning, great job Brajo, I would love to see this video back then, cheers
🍻🍻
That was my first kit. I bought it back in April 2021. Straight forward and easy to use.
yeah i wish i had it back in 2015, cheers!
Extract for the win!!!
Cheers Teach!
Good stuff! Always happy to have videos like this out to try tempt more people into the Homebrew World!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great video. I bailed at 20 seconds when you told me to, but I’m sure it’s solid! And I agreed, glass carboys suck.
lol, cheers FA
Nice and concise. I'm going to be doing my first brew tomorrow, I can't wait!
You got this!
Excellent video! Bare bones brewing with updated knowledge and experience. Cheers to that!
Much appreciated!
Awesome informative vid g.. love the classic ch funny movie clips lol
Ivan Isaac in the house!
Kveik voss and no blow off tube? You're a braver man than me comrade
ha the bucket they provide his huge. Maybe 2 gallons more than my Home Depot white food grade buckets, cheers!
Best learner video I've watched I'm only 6 months in good work
Keep grinding Jamie!
Am I able to put the corn sugar directly to the fermenter before bottling? Or do I need to transfer to a bottling bucket with the corn sugar already there?
I recently found an subscribed to your channel. I am thinking about returning to home brewing after several years off. I may have forgotten some of the processes. I really like the fact that you are into brewing on the cheap. Yes, glass carboys suck!!
Cheers Mike!
if I put the beer straight from the fermenter into a keg and carbonate it do I need to wait 2 weeks like you would with the glass bottles or is that just a waiting for carbonation not necessarily for taste or aging
Keep up the great work Braj! Currently rigging up my Mash Tun based on your cooler vid. Bout to tap my first batch tomorrow
F Yeah! You got this Hunter!
In other beginner videos I have watched that include the northern brewery starter kits, they always seem to mention siphoning to a secondary fermenter before bottling so no sludge that has become present in the bottom is carried over is would you say this is a common concern? Or is it pretty safe to jump from fermentation to bottling using the same vessel?
This is great info for the newbies. Listen to the man.
I appreciate that!
Nice vid again. The advise about the boiling time was clear and the best i head in any video. Please make a G2G Pilsner series.
Thanks for the idea!
Deuce Bigalow clip is fire

I'm running a workshop next week on starting home brewing. I'm now thinking of scrapping my presentation and just showing your vid (if you don't mind, of course) :). Great stuff - keep it up.
Go for it! Cheers!
Awesome video braj, just made me think more about my video and that I should break down the steps more. Maybe next brew! Cheers
Keep grinding braj!
You have convinced me to get a new fermenter with a spigot. And to try kveik yeast.
Also: counterflow or plate chiller is a great investment. And bottling with caps is annoying AF. I use swingtop bottles. Much easier.
Kegging is definitely less work than bottling but bottles are more practical for sharing/transportation 👍🏻
Good stuff!
this is the exact video i needed
Cool vid dude, I’m diving into homebrew and just ordered all my shit. Instead of the Northern Brewer kit I opted for the MoreBeer kit. Also got the Inkbird and Kviek yeast. Wish my luck and peace out.
Love the vids man, always entertaining!!! Cheers bud!
Thanks for the visit, cheers Steve!
King thank you
There he is! What up OG?!
You can do a partial Mash too half grain half extract ! But might be a little extra work
I broke your rule and stayed around - CH Weissman FTW!
lol nice catch
Nicely done!
Thank you! Cheers!
Great video man! Just sent it to my dad as he is a mini mash brewer and there are some great tips here for him.
Glad I could help!
Wish I had this video when I started. Cheers braj
Double D in the house!
any tips on how much priming sugar to use and with how much water for a 5 gallon batch?
yeah the whole bog the kit provides
Awesome video for beginners!
I had this kit when I started out brewing.. I still use alot of it now! Block party was my second batch . Caribou slobber was the one I got with the kit.
Content is absolutely from the channel as usual 🍻 cheers ✌
Thanks for sharing!
Been using northern brew kit for 1-2 years now. So easy to use and brew and clean.
Couldn't agree more!
Great video! This made brewing less intimidating for me. I’ve been psyching myself out with too many complicated methods and tools to get. Are there any risks to using a growler to carbonate in? I heard they weren’t designed for that and could blow.
I used to use growlers all the time to ferment in. The only problem is having the caps!
@@HOMEBREW4LIFE Thanks, braj!
Rookie question At 5:46 the thermometer probe was submerged in the water. Does anyone know what the highest temp the inkbird can tolerate?
Excellent video as I embark on my second brew day…. Saison it is :)
Your evolution is inspiring to see, braj. Stay hard 💪
I appreciate that!
Thanks for the videos. Great content.
Thanks for watching!
Great video, love you guys. New to home brew and still going the kits. Got a nice pink grapefruit IPA brewing at the moment. 10 days so far in the fermenter.
What's this 2 day fermentation, seems like witch craft, would like to know more about it, if poss.
give the yeast a chance!
@@HOMEBREW4LIFE I usually just use the yeast with the kits, but will stock up on some of kveik. Also need to get my finger out and start doing all grain or partial mash.
Thanks you the reply and keep the awesome content flowing 👍
Great information and helpful tips. NB was what I bought when I first started. Thanks for the great content CH.
Glad to hear it!
Dope job, braj
Cheers braj!
I'm brewing my first beer with that northern brewer kit. I'm using Nottingham Yeast instead of Kveik. Did you say fermintation is done in two days? I thought it takes two weeks for primary and three for extended primary. How do I know it's okay to continue to bottling?
Edit: Nevermind, you answered it.
Naw that day is over. I ferment every batch no longer than a week
Love this channel! BTW what's the name of movie from 2:12? I actually watch two movies from early 00' which fragments we're in you vids! Keep them coming.
Quick couple questions with the Kveik yeast. What temp are you fermenting at for it to be done in 2 days or is it any temp 70+ degrees that will result in such a quick fermentation? Second question is does it give off any flavor characteristics or is it kind of like SafeAle 05, but way tougher and quicker?
75 degrees in my closet. And I wouldn't compare it to SafeAle 05, cheers!
Do you not let the priming sugar solution cool before adding it to your beer before bottling?
16oz's pour into 5 gallons will get to room temp in about 15 seconds, cheers tim!
Thanks for the plug braj!
I've still got both of them!
Calling out Joshua Weissman. I love it braj!
See you tomorrow braj!
Awesome video!
Thx Nick!
No Glass! It's too danger 💪💪💪
Cheers Twin!
Can I lower alcohol levels by decreasing quantity of Sugar as I want to keep alcohol levels very not more than 1%.
yeah just do about 2lbs of malt for 1%
Bipidy bopidy brew day!
Cheers Wayne!
I heard you say that you could bottle condition in growlers. Have you ever had them explode? I've heard from a few sources that growlers are not good to bottle condition because the glass in growlers is not as thick as bottles and because of that you should only fill growlers after carbonation is completed. I'm curious to hear what you've found true from experience.
It's totally fine. There's way too much fear factor stuff on the web
@@HOMEBREW4LIFE awesome thanks I have about 6 of them from various outings that I will attempt to use.
Definitely don't use them as a fermenter though! If you're sure there is no residual sugar it should be okay for conditioning, but never fermenting. They will explode. Also most styles don't need much conditioning, if any, so you can just put them in a keg or bottle and start drinking pronto.
Would you add the priming mix to your your bee before legging it? I’ve been legging mine and just pressure carbonating but I’ve been thinking f doing two batches and just leaving one keg priming while I drink the other(mini fridge only fits one torpedo keg, not slimline)
Yes, absolutely
Chea'Braj! Great video... That Amber Ale Block Party kit was my first stab at homebrewing and got me hooked. I still use a lot from that kit to this day. Only thing I wish was that this video was around a few years ago when I started brewing, dammit lol
good seeing you tonight braj!
Fine fine I'll leave, the first 30 sec were good! Lol great update to the old videos, cheers braj
My man HT!
Where does the expression braj come from? Keep up the good work!
I’ll let you know after you pass the first test 🍻
Great advice legging is the future but bottling is good to start I still use plastic buckets they are fine just change them every couple of years or if they get scratched. You don’t need to spend fortunes to make good beer there can be a lot of snobbery in home brewing having all the latest stainless shiny equipment just ignore it if your beer is good no one will be bothered how you made it.
We need "mandatory beer chug" and "cheers to eating good, and drinking good" tshirts please
on route!
I still use glass carboys to ferment, why? They were free. Honestly one of the biggest catalyst to me starting making beer was a local brewery gave me 6 carboys and 20 corny kegs because they couldn't use them. But I've been considering the switch to something more robust for fermenting.
I learned the hard way, but I hope you don't!
Great to hear im not the only one !!!!! CH had a Vid on Pressure Fermenting in a corny Keg thats a Blast(Thank you CH) and Pressure Transfer of beer is SOOOO EASY !
Awesome video, great advice!
Thanks so much!
Today I'll say I love you without feeling conflicted!
the feeling is mutual! :)
This is a great video
Thx Kevin!
Kveik is a super tip for beginners but I would go for a more neutral Kveik like Lutra or Krispy.
The one I used couldn't have worked better, cheers!
Great video CH!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Honestly for a new home brewer, I wouldn't even waste the money on the inkbird thermometer. I would just go to an outlet mall and buy an infrared laser thermometer. That way if you stop home brewing, you at least have a useful tool.
Cheers!
Cheers braj!
I have my Brewing Science Certificate AND am a Cicerone Certified Beer Server, but I watched the whole thing. Forgive me?
BTW, solid intro to brewing. Some starter kits are so sketchy they discourage folks from continuing to brew.
you are forgiven braj lol!
Oh that was good 👍
Cheers DD!
Love you too! I wish you had made that video 3 years ago:) haha. Cheers to CH from DK
See you tonight braj!
6 years too late, but affirms what I've learned. Slow learner I am.
I'm a huge Mel brooks fan too! #youngfrankenstein
@@HOMEBREW4LIFE Very nice!
Abby someone, Abby... Normal! Lol
Man, why was I pissing around with wonky thermometers, when I have multiple inkbirds for fermentation. Tip appreciated!
I learned the hard way too!
best title ever
haha that made me lolz. Cheers Arno
No need to boil. Just pour the extract in cold and top up with water.
👍👍👍👍👍
heading over!
Cool video!
Thanks for the visit
