Hi everyone. In this episode I take a look and use the amazing headphone DAC from RME. This thing pack a serious punch. Enjoy come find us at americanaudioco.uk
Been mastering on this for over a year, probably over 100 masters for clients. I love it. I sold my Hilo and Merging Anubis, I love it that much. I have worked exclusively on headphones and DAC for mastering for three years after over 25 on monitors. The combination of this and my headphones (from Audeze) is more than enough for me to do my job. Thanks for the video.
What do you think about VSX headphones? Do you use a room emulation or xfeed with your Audeze? I recently bought this unit for mixing with headphones lol
@@toktok9975 I tried the vsx at the beta stage and yeh, they're pretty good, but I don't really like the whole room emulation thing personally. I do sometimes use crossfeed in plugins like Can Opener and also the matrix on my Phonitor 2, but I prefer to know how my headphones translate with nothing on them at all. If I do switch in crossfeed it is only for a minute or two and I don't make any critical decisions using crossfeed. But a ton of people swear by the Slate headphones so they work for some people for sure.
Thanks for the video particularly the EQ settings explanation. As a strictly ammeter two channel listener I don't even use headphones though your instructions still help as they apply equally to the speakers. The "Rich feature set" was my main reason for buying the ADI-2 FS , I felt that even if I chose a potentially better sounding DAC at the same price with the versatility of the RME if I could not Achieve a sound I loved it would be my fault not the DAC's . I don't know where I went wrong but after experimenting with the settings over the fist few weeks I had ruined my settings, eventually I found the Factory reset and for over a year since I have had it set as it came out the box(Filters aside). By now I have a verry expensive sound system with every component chosen with only one criteria: "Disappear". The RME (though potentially a sound tweak opportunity ) like everything else, was chosen so that as far as possible the only factor influencing my sound will be my choice of valves in my valve amps. (Actively looking for a Single ended Valve Amp(s) that I can "Tube Role" the same range of valves as my Prima Luna uses. Unlike most DAC's it features a proper pre amp out so Power Amp only, or Integrated valve amp Advice welcome). Since spending my latest £1300 on my sound system I have finally achieved my life long ambition of Perfect cristal clarity. Ironically the problem with this delightful transparency is that albums that you may have known in my case for up to 50 years or more are littered with "Sound Bombs". On one recording (I can't remember at the moment) smack bang in the middle of the sound stage someone is tapping on a metal pipe ruining a familiar track(😃Mabey I will name one of the 99 per output EQ pre-sets after that particular track and utterly kill that verry narrow frequency and get rid of that pipe). Anyway I enjoyed your video so I thought you might be interested in another perspective.
I also use it as dac+pre-amp to supply my amp. I recently add a streamer only and the whole thing is excellent ! BUT, what you don't mention is also very important, it is a pro built, you are not going to have nasty problems after a while, it is flawless, not a chinese stuff you may have to return for repair after a short period.
Totally agree with you there mate. You cannot beat the build quality and technical engineering of this device. Plus, it's German so you know it's going to be of a standard not normally seen with this type of product. The flexibility is absolutely superb and smashes the competition in that regard. Yes, there's a steep learning curve but once you dial it in, it's unmatched. 👍
Indeed a linear power supply is a must, by the way, I no longer use the preamplifier. The loudness function works perfectly, you hear no difference if you turn the DAC up or down, 50 dB or 90 dB sounds exactly the same, only the sound pressure changes
There is more than shielding and grounding with XLR connections. Balanced audio has circuitry on both ends to reduce noise based on phase cancellation. But yes, I agree balanced audio does not always provide better audio quality. As a matter of fact the added balancing circuitry can add distortion. Balanced audio is only necessary for longer cable runs. Another thing to be aware of is the operating voltage normally differs between balanced and unbalanced signals so generally it is best to match inputs and outputs.
Completely agree with you, BUT there is so much "prosumer"kit out there that has Balanced connections. But internally, they are not balanced at all. I am also trying to keep the explanations to a point where everyone can understand. I can do deep dives, but YT isnt really the place & I personally prefer interacting with people on a workshop style platform.
And when something is good like this review you don't need to ask for a like, because you will get it anyway. Thanks for a basic menu walkthrough, I'm going to try it within a few days :)
Thanks for yet another great video! For reference sound (clear and clean and neutral and natural) to mix and master dialogue and acapella in a small studio. No extra bells and whistles needed, I just want the best possible reference audio. What would you recommend? 1. RME ADI-2 DAC FS 2. TOPPING A90 + D90 3. Or another option?
I don't want to......But if I keep it, I gotta buy it. My current setup is very good anyway, this is why I can reference from my Sound Devices 833 to the RME.
I know its a DAC with some AMP in it. But I read that the power is limited so as not to damage low impedance headphones. Can it drive (reletively) high impedance headphones such as the HD 800S or will they sound under-driven and bright?
this is much more than a headphone amp - I own the very same and you cant get a better dac unless you spent a four digit number for this alone ... a parametric eq is also not to get for a cheap price ... all this combined this is a real steal
Walk into any Professional Recording Studio an there is a good chance they will own a RME audio interface, this is there DSD/DAC Reference model. SO you can guarantee its quality, durability and reliability its state of the art. The PRO version gives you 2x headphone outputs analogue outputs each with their own DAC chip its almost unrivalled. I doubt any DSD/DAC is better, no matter what it costs.
Hello, I have U12T Um Melody MeskII, so, for this hig-end IEMS, what is the best DAC you can recommend? Hugo 2? Or RME ADI 2 DAC? Or high-end DAP (Sp2000, FiooM17, iBasso Dx320) (please regardless of the price:))
@@kaankucuk1612 I personally use the Motu M4 and love it, but if I could justify the cost and investment I would have bought the RME ADI 2 Pro. The reason I would choose the Pro is the fact it has x2 chips, but I would buy either RME DAC for the features they offer.
Locking mechanisms on connectors are not a feature but a terrible idea: if you trip on a cable you can cause a tragedy. A magnetic lock is the perfect solution, it keeps the connector in place but safely detaches when pulled. After discovering that kind of mechanism on my Surface I keep wondering why it hasn't become the standard for every appliance out there, at least expensive ones.
@@rallzam If something pulls the cable, the locking mechanism will only make it worse. If nothing pulls it then the locking mechanism does nothing. What's the purpose or advantage of having it then?
The power plug is only locked when the plug is turned a few degrees, the connection is more than solid without it being turned and locked, so it doesn't have to be locked if not preferred.

Check the PRO version as well if you need ADC and DAC

I use that same setup as you mate for mastering 👍 my clients are happy !
Hi! What kind of Audeze headphones did you use? Reference ones? (LCD-X)
I've been using mine as a two channel Pre/DAC for about six months. I absolutely love it.
What does that mean?

Thanks for the vid. I love my RME ADI 2 FS. Subbed.
Awesome review in the detail covered 💯
that UI is excellent
Great review! You said you also listened to vinyl through the rme, how exactly?

I bought an SMSL stack A0200, D0200 and H0200. I saw this device a few months after my purchases. Now I want it...

Can your record the signal in your PC's recording software from the digital input?

Ok, my first question is...What microphone are you using and has your studio been damped ( treated properly).
I can't believe you're sending it back.....
I don't want to......But if I keep it, I gotta buy it. My current setup is very good anyway, this is why I can reference from my Sound Devices 833 to the RME.
Would this be a good option for HD 800s and later on buy a dedicated amp if I need one...
I use it with 800s and they sound great, especial after some EQ, you will not need any better amp than what is inbuilt.
Is this the ESS or AKM version?
I know its a DAC with some AMP in it. But I read that the power is limited so as not to damage low impedance headphones. Can it drive (reletively) high impedance headphones such as the HD 800S or will they sound under-driven and bright?
The inbuilt amp is more than enough for 800s, I think it deliver 350mw at 300 ohm, plenty of power.
Think you mean 0.5db hehe! Can you EQ and still output in the digital domain for another DAC to do the conversion? Thanks
The Eq'ing is for the outputs on the device itself, so it only effects the headphone outs and XLR out.
Fantastic review. Took a lot of time I’m sure.
It did. Thank you for your kind words.
So with the eq you can flatten any headphone for mixing and mastering?
Yes!
So this is not for speakers? I would love to try eq on my speakers and i need a dac.
You can.. rca or xlr can be used for preamp.

The best thing on the back is the, “Made in Germany”. Yes!!
Would really like to get one because of its EQ but sadly it’s far too complicated to use.
Super easy
DAC, there is DAC in the name of the RME! Do you really classify this as an amp?
yes and a very powerful clean one at that. from the spec sheet "Max power @ 0.001% THD: 1.5 W per channel"

sorry, but who the hell places a 1k dac somehow to trip on the cable? rule #1 never lay down cable through the room. lay them always around.
