Hi Elle, loved this video ! I was wondering if it might be possible to know a bit about how you decided in becoming barrister over being a solicitor, what were the considerations you made in deciding this !?
@joedean2338 hi Joe! That’s a really great question and I assumed for a long time I’d go down the solicitor route! I think for me, having a bit more control of my practice and the ability to take on a wide range of work appealed. I also like that as a barrister you’re often asked to tackle some really academically challenging areas of law, which involves a lot of research. Sometimes solicitors do that too but often it gets passed on to a barrister. There are definitely pros and cons to each. One thing that worried me about becoming a barrister is that as you’re self employed you don’t have rights that solicitors (who are employees) have like holiday pay, sick pay etc. But for me ultimately the scales tipped towards going down the barrister route. Ultimately, I worked out very early on I didn’t want to go to a big commercial firm so ruled that out and then explored my options from there.
Great video ❤
