I remember watching a lot of Chinese movies at the time Fearless was released. The trope seemed to be that the Japanese were always, always the enemy. They were the cheating athlete, the unscrupulous coach who did everything to win, the corrupt business partner, the greedy landlord, etc. (Not a Chinese movie but Masato Harada essentially reprises his role as the greedy arrogant businessman from The Last Samurai.) So seeing a sympathetic Japanese character who befriends Huo, invites him to tea, speaks gently with him (at the time Japan was already a world power while China was still strictly sticks with a 4,000 year history), then insists on an absolutely Bushido fair fair fight against the wishes of the organizers was exemplary.
I understand what they are saying even if i do not know how to speak japanese & chinese. "Are you the one who puts the poison". "Are you really ok??". "Well look at them cheering, i can't back down". "Ok, but i wont hold back".

Realistically, if you notice your opponent is slowing down and not improving. Even when you first fought them. From first round? Something is up and sketchy. It's all about sportsmanship.
