- Stop Making This Hop-Up Mistake! Set It Right for Maximum Performance
If you're an airsoft player, you know that hop-up is a crucial component of your gun's accuracy. However, many players don't realize that they may be setting their hop-up incorrectly, which can lead to inconsistent shots and poor accuracy. In this video, we'll show you how to set your hop-up correctly and avoid common mistakes.

Not that well. Just destroyed my First Strike bottle. Ruined the threads where the fill nipple sits. And the bad part is... It was probably not necessary to remove the fill nipple.

good now ty haha
Honestly love the straightforward approach. Facts are facts and not enough people talk about facts. There is so much misleading information in the airsoft community and I'm glad somebody is leading people in the right direction! Keep it up man!👍
Hey I am glad you like the video! I got a video coming out next weekend that follows up on this, where I go in-depth with bb weight and how much it actually matters. And regards fact's I think the airsoft community have been lied to and been told "I feel like this is best" for far to long without any data backing up things for a long time and it's dumb, hence why my shooting test videos are normally 1 hour, because I go very in depth with data. But I am glad it made sence, kinda afraid how it come across on video.
Hop up setup and Red dot/scope zeroing are the most underrated basic skills which most of the players do not master. They rather go for better internals and they think it will gonna carry them. The video from SI is more of a showcase how stable the bb can be at that ridiculous 90m mark. That is what we can call "shooting" for the max distance. I too, prefer to talk about effective range, which I consider the maximum distance the bb can go as straight as possible. In this department, heavy bbs are the king. For those who have not tried it, even going to 0.4g from let's say 0.32g is quite a difference in effective range (while retaining the same Joules)
Zeroing is such a importen thing but most dont 🤷♂️😂
You’re only keep the same joules with an aeg gbbr or hpa joules increase and have to be managed by a regulator or npas in a gbbr
Great video, sites in uk have different limits for joules so our effective range will be different but like you I hate it when the “community” influencers are clearly paid to review certain products I wish there were more like you, Luke, James. who just give honest feedback and advice. Keep up the good work.
Thanks, I hope the video helped! ; )
“R-hop, S-hop, Flat hop, Deez Nuts hop”
That last one brings out the secret sauce 🤷♂️
sick vid mate! that app is so usefull! thanks
Happy to help
Good video, I like it when the science/proof is in the video aswell.
Glad you like it, I hope it was clear enought,
@@kaslab it was. Even downloaded the app myselft to check it out.
Hey man, I enjoy your videos. You have a good personaltiy and most importantly you're down to earth and honest. I recently picked up a 10.3" MTW Billet Gen 3. I have a bunch of packings I bought Macaron 60/70 and Super Macaron 60/70's and MRHOP's (I had those already and they didn't perform well with my paragon armories edgi 6.05 barrel in the MTW.
I have a Gorilla Magnetic trigger and FCU and I have the SI Alpha & the Maxx M4W hop up. I'm trying to figure out the best setup for me. Stock shot money for me when it broke in, but the effective range wasn't as far as I was hoping for maybe 50-55m. I wanted to get some more effective range, I'm curious what your favorite mixture of hop up/packing and nubs are.
I'm using .30's btw but I bought some .40s. I haven't used the .40's much but the .30s shoot money so I can imagine the .40s will shoot even better.
Do you use O-rings to stabilize the inner barrel or the inner barrel spring for the hopup? Do you teflon tape your packing to seal the back side (not to interfere with the C-Clip) but just slightly over?
Glad you like the content mate! and god damn it trhat's a detailed comment, I will try to do my best to give you a good answer..
to your first question:
I like to use maxx m4w with umbrella amrory eu r-hop or with maple leaf super macron 70* that's the two setups I like the most. ( I might have a video coming up with stock/maxx/silent/cnc coming up against each other ;)
to your second question:
The more heavy bb the better, but I dont know what jules you run..
last question you asked:
I dont use o rings or any tape for the barrel or bucking.
I have two mtw's I run maxx m4w + umbrella armory eu r-hop barrel in both of them, cqb is 1.69J with .40's and SPR is 2.25J with .45's.
I think I managed to answer everything? if not feel free to ask again and I will respond ;)
@kaslab Thanks for the response. I'm shooting 1.64j I was able to shoot stock at 1.5j perfectly it just didn't have as much range as I wanted. Think the yellow super macaron may be better? Highest fps at my fields for rifles is 1.86j but 1 field is 1.64j.
@@Sw1tchTube Maple leaf super macroon 60* would be a good choice for you, and your very welcome! I love to answer commnets that's why I do this! ;)
thanks again for the info, have you ran the super macaron in the maxx? If so what nub I'm using the omega.
@kaslab If you're ever in the US and in the New Hampshire area traveling would love to run with you!
On the silent industries with the super macaron are you using white or black lips? I noticed with black lips and my epm1 mags I'm getting double feeds once in a while. Gonna try white. But my epm1s except 1 of them are new so need to break them in more
Great video and explanations! Can you do a video on zeroing with your hop trajectory setup? For example, do you zero by looking against a background and put at a fixed point on the BB flight path (eg highest point), or do you find a target at a fixed distance and zero a known distance?
I always zero to the sites I go to they always have targets you can hit at diff ranges..
Edit: glad you liked the video 🥳
@@kaslab so say for your 2.8J MTW would you zero at like 60m or something (the max effective range before the BB starts to drop off?)
@@rdb9936 if I go to a field and find out my most common engagement ranges. let’s say 60m then that’s it.
@@kaslab ahh I see! Interesting! For my snipers, I tend to zero and then forget, then learn slight under and over holds for set distance. Set the hop and forget so to speak. Presumably different if AR/SPR though
2.88 joules is as far as i know not allowed on any field in germany, only if its a private game with some absolute mad lads trying to get hurt :D
snipers cap at 2.5j here mostly
but that explains why you have so much range
Hey bro! I always say when people ask why I can shoot so far, is that we have crazy high jules In Denmark... my CQB is 1.69J with .40's and SPR I run .45's with 2.25J So it makes a LOT of sence why I can shoot so far. Hope the video made some sence though, trying to get a point across so the airsoft community is getting more informed!
@@kaslab yeah the video is logical and easy to understand. I think it will help a lot of new players. I guess most "veterans" already understood the concept of an effective shooting range and how important it is to zero your sights for that effective range.
Most outdoor fields here allow 1.5 to 1.6 with assault rifles, dmrs get a little more but have a rof / trigger penalty and snipers cap at 2.5 but have a minimum engagement of 15-20meters :D
Fair enought! @@HappyH4x0r
The German field in Brozek ("Battlegrounds") has a 4J cap for snipers but this means that they have to be AT LEAST 40 meters away from their target (rule: XJoules x10 = minimum range for safety reasons)
Thats because the area is crazy large
Hi Kasper. As a fellow Dane i like your approach of scientific matter. I have a question about the hopup in the app. How do you translate the procentege to a mtw with a Maxx hopup?
Hey I’m glad you like the video, honestly there are no exact way to translate the hop % from the app to the replica it self, it all depends what kind of hop your using. Example: r-hop / flat-hop / s-hop etc, they all take different degrees/% of hop needed to reach the same goal. My maxx is on 7 with 0.40 at 1.69J with umbrella r-hop, with normal Ml SM 70* I was about the same. So it’s hard to say. But I’m glad people appreciate the scientific approach to it, instead sharing a option 🔥🫶🏻🤌🏻
Ok, so in using on my Mtw Forge 0.32 gr whit a yellow super macaron rubber about 1.95 joule, Maxx are set to 6.2ish. Does it seems right?
Honestly I would not be able to say, also 1.95J for ML SM 60*(yellow) seems kinda low, I would 100% use a (blue) 70* but if it works it works.@@gunnyaction2969
Anvil airsoft does great range test videos too.
Thanks for the heads up 👌🏻👍🏻
Agree on all points except that your “app” is really not factoring in good hop ups…. My scorpion evo eith stock hop and barrel does ~60 meters with 0.28 bb’s (no wind, no lobbing) on full auto effectively
Glad you like the video 👌🏻❤️
I never thought about "usefull hop-up" just max range lol
gotta be usefull to the commmmuuunnniiity!
People need to measure their effective distance FROM PRONE POSITION.
If you don't, and you measure your range from standing up, then you are adding a lot of extra meters to the bb because you are standing up... I see a lot of people measure distance even from high grounds, like bro wtf are you doing? You are effecting your measurement, because when you go to lower ground your distance is NOT going to be what you measured...
I do not agree, this is airsoft, laying doing is not smart, most people dont do that at all. So shooting at a target that's "normal person hight" is the recipie for the best result. But yeah measuring from a "high ground" like lets say 3 + meters up is dumb, that wil obivously effect the result and give a unrealistic result...
but I get where your coming from with "laying down" so everyone its the same high for a "standard" for a test.
You asked for honest feed back, well here you go.
Hiya, as it doesn't look like anyone is talking about. I have a question about the data you are presenting. I think there should be a little transparency here given you have the data point set at a constant 1.7m and are then pointing out that the given height of a bb is for example 2.7m at 12:36. This is only an increase in elevation of 1m which I feel is actually pretty reasonable and returning to the original elevation at 70'ish meters. Additionally, without knowing the mathematics that function behind this app it is a challenge to really know if this app means anything besides a nice fancy graph.
I am concerned given (having downloaded the app) how easy it is to create data that makes zero sense, and the app also doesn't take into any sort of consideration what so ever for hop material, size, shape, barrel dimensions, length, air delivery, environmental, BB consistency or surface. As a tech of some renowned I can imagine you know very well how important these factors can be.
I have zero issue with data being presented, data analysis is pretty much my IRL job so I get it. I would just be wary when pre-loading expectations that data is fully accurate, then within your own presentation misrepresent that data it should be questioned.
I'm just a humble tech and player of some 15 years now, not looking to shool anyone, have no claims to make regards what I can and cannot do with airsoft stuff. I am taking it purely on what I stumbled across in this video.
I think perhaps rather than using an app that might lead people in the wrong direction, a simple bit of paper and visual practical demonstrations would do a much better job at teaching. Let your presentation speak for itself rather than getting stuck in disproving others claims. I am excited to see your demonstration of bb weights you talked about, and hope that you consider this feedback.
TLDR - Your miss representing your own data a little and stating it as a tool that is factual when it's not. It is at best a very basic visual guide at best and should be taken with HUGE pinch of salt.
Hey I truly appricaite your feedback, your one of the few people that seem to understand what the video was actually about, I am not sure if I said it in this video, but in the bb video I say "this is a good baseline to go from" As for how the maths work behind the app, it takes air drag and balistics of the bb + the magnus effect in use, and that's how it's so accurate, i've used the app alot before I started thinking about sharing it, and it seems to hold up very well actually in most cases.
in regards to set to 1.7m that's might hight, and then over-hop to 2.7m that's kinda useless since you can't hit anyone at let's say 50m because it's at 2.7m high, so you would have to aim for the feet etc, that's over-hopping and not using a effective range.
in regards what hop it's using if it's r/s/flap-hop I don't know and I havent been able to find any data about it, but from my expirence testing a buuunch of buckins/nubs/barrels - when you find something that works they all tend to get around the same range no matter which style of hop your using.
I also realised after releasing it, I would have re-done 70% of the video because I share some of the information in a confusing way, and I should litterly just say: "This app is a amazing base line" since it takes the magnus effect and air drag efficiency and the bb balistics in the math calculation, and that would have been the end of that, but instead, since I have been using the app so much, I did not explain everything, and i just kinda tippy toed over it, and I was like "they will use the app and then they understand all I mean so I dont need to explain" but that was a horrible though, obviously when I am trying to explain and teach the airsoft community I need to take into consideration I am teaching a toddler how to drink etc... but I learned from that, The videos I will make for after the bb video, will be more precise, and spoken in a way that everyone can understand with the right "keywords" to explain why it is why it is... and not kinda like it video where it's "it is what it is" the app shows it etc..
Also I am happy that you wrote the comment, in regards to where you wrote " data being presented" I am trying to learn how to explain it, so it makes sence and it's correct, and I dont say stupid shit, I showed the video to my math mate after this and he just cried and said wtf show me the video before you release, so I can teach you the right words, and right setup etc.. but the video and point still stands and I think it got across, just not as elegant as it should have! ;D
I hope I answer all your questions, if not pls write again, and will see what I can do.. The plan is to have a team around me one day when i do this kind of stuff, that can help my ADHD ass to get the point across as it should!
@@kaslab ADHD is a bitch :D Feel that!
I think you made your point, I think there just needed to be a heavy disclaimer when you personally state 'this is fact' and the comments below state 'DANG I love facts' then the data presented is really just a basis on what is pretty simply calculations in the world of balistics.
You are right though, when you get that sweet spot with any set up at certain joules, certain bbs, certain delivery method you really do find that the hopup itself can be tuned to get mostly the same performance with some time and effort. R-hop/s-hop/flat hop/ ML/ VSR or AEG bucking it always pretty much ends the same. Have a set of draws with maybe 100 or so various hop-up rubbers and I feel with the right set up and BB's you can get good results from most with patiences.
I even have an 20 year old stock STAR M249 that performs well with just good tuning and GOOD BBS which I feel are just as important I run Geoffs and/or long bows presently in everything. ASG blasters not bad and their premium blaster range is good to. I think they are all rebranded BLS though, but don't quote me on that.
I am excited to see you bb weight review. Not sure if it has value to you, but bb surface quality, mold quality and tollerences matter to me personally. Oh and don't forget our old swelly boys! I had a bag of bio bbs that literally turned to slime after a year. Love it :D
@@MaiAkamegami I always say, you don’t need to have some stupid setup like me, you can do just as good for half or less.. and it’s not a (bb weight review) I am explaining why bb weight matters, and that bb weight can make 1000 euro replica shoot like a 100 one, it’s more like a (how to optimise your replicas performance with the right bb weight for your setup) - the plan was to go crazy in-depth with how much force a bb carries with it to let’s say 60 meters etc.. but that will be a video for it self… it’s super nerdy but good information for people to get. - glad you liked the video though! 🫶🏻👌🏻🤌🏻

so people who are locked at 1.5J like me are screwed for range? (MTW MAX Hop)
Lucky you. We are locked for full auto capability at 1.2 joule at .30. Max BB weight is also .30
No your not screwed at all for range, but you obivously won't get as long range as someone who can run way higher range, without lobbing the bb's and then it's missing the whole point of "effective range"

Using real DATA is what its all about. I agree
Love the new setup 👌and it's a good edecasinol video but you are maybe a bit too tof for the beginer 🙂
Thanks! how could it be better?
this app looks bullshit to me, it's not even close, doesn't prove anything I think.
I've downloaded it, I set all the parameters (including barrel length, diameter, etc), I've entered the correct, measured values just as I run my MTW, and shows me 40 meters of effective range, and drops the trajectory dramatically after that. I run ~1.45J with 0.4s. In reality I can hit targets on ~60 meters confidently, and with some luck even on 65, maybe on ~70ish meters. I'm actually very happy with my SI alpha.
It literally uses ballistic air drag and the Magnus effect so I’m very sure it’s very accurate.. so you probably set it up wrong 🤷♂️
@@kaslab There is actually documented evidence of airsoft guns at 1.14J having 10/10 effective shots in 20x20cm at 65 meters. really that app must be missing many real factors. not all bbs have the same coefficient of friction, not all hops lose the same energy, the turbulence generated by different shapes is very different.
Your wrong bro. The app litterly uses the magnus effect + projectile ballistics, air efficency drag. And I have tested it a lot before I released it, it lines up with everything, and its very close to real life results. You wont have a effective range at 65meters with 1.14J without a crazy high bb cruve/hop-up curve/ I might not have been the best to explain it in the video, but belive me, the app works.
edit: yes you can get hits no 65 meters, but the bb curve will be very high, if your 1.6M tall, your bb wil hit a max hight at 3.01M which is not good for real play ofc.
