  • Brooke Miles speaks at a 2015 TEDx event in Wilmington, Delaware.
    Brooke Miles, a former-dairy-fanatic-turned-vegan, is a humorous writer and a sought-after, award-winning speaker. By day, she runs her own social media consultation firm, Delaware ShoutOut. By night, she dishes up vegan “experimental” masterpieces for her meat-and-potatoes family. Some family members even eat her food. While Brooke doesn’t expect to convert the world to veganism, she aims to educate people on nutritional choices through a light-hearted approach.

    Dairy is a huge industry that governments will try to protect. Lactose intolerance is a very common problem, yet very few doctors will suggest people eliminate dairy from their diet. If you have any gut issues, try giving up dairy for two weeks and see what happens.

      There are two different kinds of milk. A1 protein is found in the milk of the Holstein breed which is most popular due to the high volume of milk and the marketability of their calves. Other breeds like the Jersey produce the A2 protein which most people, even the lactose intolerant can digest without issue.

    I loved the speaker! Such a great energy, BUT I think there's a lot more uncomfortable facts she should've brought up, because it takes a lot more than that to stir an already desensitized normative lifestyle. Like, as my env. sci prof boldly put it, what we do to cows, is like injecting a baby girl with hormones so she can be forcefully impregnated at 11 over and over to produce milk to meet a huge demand, while the product of the pregnancy is given to the meat industry or aborted, over and over again. Such a vile thought, yet the reality of it. And the hormones cause the udders to swell up, go sore, get infected, produce pus which constitutes 3% of all milk / dairy. 70% of all antibiotics are used to fight the infections caused by meat / dairy. This is a topic that cannot be put subtly, there's no polite way to state it. And I'm glad I had that env. sci prof, she made me so uncomfortable, I looked up the facts myself and went vegan while doing that course. We cannot, and mustn't be made abstract from the sanitary packaged consumables at our tables.

    Why do so many people say that 'humans are the only species that drinks another animals milk' ? We are the only species that has the knowledge to milk another animal. If I put out milk for my cat it drinks it... and loves it! If I gave milk, butter or cream to a bear, lion , dog etc, they would eat it. Years ago when we had milk men delivering milk to our doors the birds used to land on the bottles and peck a hole in the silver foil on top of the milk bottle and drink the milk... yes birds!!
    ….. my question is, what animals DONT eat dairy if you offer them it??

    I hardly ever comment, fact being that this is only my second time. But I think it necessary. Plants produce seeds for reproduction. One of the most common ways to disperse seeds is via fruit. Fruit attracts animals. Animals eat fruit. Seed exits animal etc. Milk is specifically produced by a mother for ITS offspring. Please stop trolling below. So why does the cow keep producing milk after the calf no longer needs it?

    • @indigodragon0613
      @indigodragon0613 5 лет назад +7

      roseslasher Only cows who have been subject to extended milking by either a farmer or a machine produce milk for extended periods of time. That’s how the body works. That’s why some mothers can breastfeed their 2 year old children. Milk production only stops when nursing stops, unless the body literally can’t produce anymore because it’s been drained of nutrients. Ever wonder why dairy cows look so bony? Being constantly milked means the body puts all nutrients gained from consumption towards the production of milk for the supposed “baby.” This is why many dairy cows become “spent” at around 4 years of age, when their natural lifespan is an average of 20 years.

    • @mfurtakmusic
      @mfurtakmusic 5 лет назад +7

      @@roseslasher They don't. They need to give birth regularly to keep their milk production up, even with continuous milking. So an average dairy cow will have 4 calves before her milk production still can't keep up with industry standards, at which point she will be slaughtered for low-grade meat at the young age of 5 or 6. Of those 4 calves, on average 2 will be male, and being of a dairy breed, they can't pack on the muscle like the meat breeds do. That means it doesn't make monetary sense to waste milk feeding them past the age of weaning to sell them for beef, so they will be slaughtered pretty much immediately. That leaves 2 female calves. Only one is needed to be the eventual heir to her mother as a milk production unit. The other is, again, not worth wasting expensive milk feeding up past weaning age, so she is slaughtered pretty much immediately. If allowed to live out their natural span, cattle can live to be 20 or 25 years old. Slaughtered dairy cows generally become hamburger or pet food.

    Some fair points, but correlation does not equal causation. Excessive processing, homogenisation and use of antimicrobials and hormones (bovine growth hormone, trenbolone enthate) on cows has likely caused the greater share of problems since the increase of Industrial scale dairy farming.
    Yoghurts, Kefirs and cheeses can still form part of a healthy vegetarian diet. Also no mention about goats milk or raw farm milk which is still produced all over the world .. She's not talking about how all these countries she mentioned (except USA) are almost in the arctic circle... The people leaving there produce less vitamin D from solar exposure (which is involved in calcium absorption as you might know). Most people might not do good with milk, but that doesn't mean that everybody should stop drinking milk or eating dairy. It depends on the person, instead it would be wise to recommend to the person to reduce the amount they are drinking of it or cut it out completely if they are having health issues and test if those disappear. We all are different (at the genetic level, not counting identical twins here) so I think the wisest thing to do would be putting your body to test. Try milk and dairy for a while, and try not eating dairy and milk for another while (the order doesn't matter)... If you have the same good or bad health, then it's probably not milk, but something else (it could be sugar, or something else you're eating, or it could be that you're simply sick for the time being)... Do not assume that everything works for everybody. Veganism might work for some, but that doesn't mean that it is good for everybody else. Maybe somebody else does better just by reducing meat intake or cutting it off completely but still eating dairy. I think most often we eat a huge amount rather than eating something that's bad for us. But that's just my opinion, take it as you wish :)

    What made you decide to walk away from your father’s Baskin-Robbins empire?
    When my uncle, Burt Baskin, died of a heart attack at the age of 54, I asked my dad if he thought there could be any connection between his death and the amount of ice cream he would eat. (He was a very big man who ate a LOT of ice cream.) My dad said, “No, his ticker just got tired and stopped working.” I could understand why my father would not want even to consider the possibility that there might be a connection between ice cream and heart disease. He had by that time manufactured and sold more ice cream than anyone in the history of the planet. But I felt a responsibility to look into it. And I came to the conclusion that ice cream, which is full of saturated dairy fats and sugar, was indeed linked to heart disease.
    An ice cream cone isn’t going to kill anyone, but the more you eat, the more likely you are to have heart disease, diabetes, and many other problems. If you’re in the ice cream business, you want people to eat a lot. That’s the business model. And I didn’t want to make my living selling a product that might be undermining anyone’s health. Also, I visited the large commercial dairies where Baskin-Robbins got its dairy products, and I saw how the cows were treated. It broke my heart to see them treated so poorly. I found the idea of profiting from such cruelty to be appalling.
    You wrote your first book, Diet for a New America, in 1987. What has changed since then?
    There is a lot more awareness now that animals in factory farms and feedlots are routinely subjected to horrible conditions. And a lot more people are standing in opposition to this systematic cruelty. And there is also a lot more awareness about the connection between industrial meat production, greenhouse gas emissions, and the destabilization of our climate.

    Also, cut out the cow and you’ll be ingesting all kinds of pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers directly... Great idea!!!...

    • @Prancer1231
      @Prancer1231 5 лет назад +3

      The pesticides are more concentrated in the meat and milk than if you just consume plants directly. You can also eat organic produce if you are worried about pesticides. "If humans and animals eat the same plants, and humans then eat the flesh of these same animals, or drink their milk, the pesticides become concentrated in the bodies and body fluids of those food-animals."

      Dairy contains casomorphins, which are highly addictive. They bind to the same receptors as opiates. My wife quit milk cold turkey and had about 3 days of withdrawals. It sucked.

    LOL. Yeah, the reason she lost 15 lbs after going vegan is that she started consuming far fewer calories. And the reason she started sleeping 2 hours shorter is because when you're starving your body of needed calories/nutrients your catecholamines increase in order to amp up your central nervous system in order to mobilize your body into a more aware and active state so that you (the organism) are better able to acquire the very sustenance that has you (your body's system) in that state to begin with . . . consequently such a person's life becomes all about food/cycles of eating as such a person is never not in this state making life a constant rollercoaster ride of various seemingly baseless amounts of anxiety.

    • @ambersykora352

      Tom do you think it has anything to do with the fact that all dairy breaks down and releases a form of morphine in the stomach??? that's why you crave cheese. and being dependent on opiates to function I understand that feeling all too well. that's where the cravings of dairy and cheese come in. evolution created these morphine substances so that no matter what the baby would always want more of mothers milk to ensure growth and proper nourishment and bond. you do the math.

    I live in Rural Canada. My Vegan friends seem to import the majority of their diet from the tropics. I can't understand why they think that it is a good idea to be vegan here.
    I was raised on goats milk from our goats. I tried store bought cow milk when I was 6 and thought it tasted really weird. I stopped drinking milk when I was 14 but I still eat cheese and other baked goods. Butter! Oh butter is so good!
    I have a family cow now and I am so glad to be able to provide milk, meat, yoghurt, cheese and butter for my family. I am no fan of commercial dairy with all their herbicides, pesticides, antibiotics and growth hormones. That stuff will make you sick for sure. Raw milk from grass-fed cows? That is really good food!
    No I still don't drink milk but yes I love the other products and I am so glad to be able to provide such good food for the family at the same time as I keep the grass nicely mown and manured.
    I will certainly gain a whole lot of respect for vegans when I see them start to put some actual food on the table and also to show that that food can be produced locally. If I could meet a vegan mother of many healthy children who does not suffer from anemia too then I will really start to think differently about veganism.
    Otherwise it just looks to me like people who are trying to save the world without having a solid grounding in this world in the first place. A salt of the earth vegan. That is someone I would like to meet.

      Respect to you sir for properly raising and living off of your own livestock rather than consuming factory farmed animal products. It really is a better alternative for animal welfare, human health, public safety (antibiotic resistance crises), and the environment.
      You must concede however, that it is not just vegans, but rather the majority of Canadians that buy most of their food (not to mention everything else) non locally.
      I for one try to either grow the foods and herbs I can, other wise I buy my (vegan) food Canadian. Theres even a couple events in my city that spotlight local vegan entrepreneurs and businesses.
      As for vitamins and minerals, some deficiencies such as iron or b12 are more common in vegans, yet deficiencies such as magnesium, potassium, folate, vit C, vit E etc. are actually more common in the general meat eating population. Thats why multi-vitamins are reccomended by doctors to many people, not just vegans :)

    not everyone used milk, its still a new thing, only introduced within the last 3- 5 centuries (its an estimate) and it was mostly used by middle easterns and Europeans. I suppose thats why most people who dont have middle eastern and European ancestry have some sort of digestive issue because its a new thing (Im native American but me and my family have no stomach issues, only my dad's side does) Most people used other things to get calcium and other essential vitamins, (like boiling pine needles is a great source of getting vitamim c). I dont understand the ideas with being vegan or vegetarian except the idea of losing weight but for you people who do vegan/vegetarian ways.. good job 👍
