Screech owl moved into our wood pecker house before I got the owl house up. Baby 1 just flew out tonight and baby 2 checking things out. In the mean time I got the owl house up so hopefully they will nest in there next season and be a tad more comfy. They are the coolest birds ever and free rat control.

One of these just shocked me. It was twice the size of the one here. I didn't expect it to be there - just sitting on the post of a fence n then it rotated it's head just like you showed n looked right at me, college park, Georgia.

We just found a red screeching owl on the ground in our backyard after a very hard rain (we do live in Houston/city so we are not in the country). It appears to be a baby but has all feathers. It doesn't seem injured but I haven't completely examined the thighs or under wings. It is completely alert, just being curious when sees us and doesn't panic when we are near but will not fly. We placed it in a box with a clean towel, well vented, to get it warm due to the colder weather and it was wet. It did expel a small "white pellet" so I don't believe it is starving and since it isn't green doesn't appear to be GI sick. I know sometimes they will stay on ground if young or mating but we have stray cats in area as well as opossums that do come in the back yard. Wondering what we can do - feed it/if so what, or leave it be in box? We have called the Texas Rehabilitation Coalition but waiting for them to call me back. We don't want it to starve or dehydrate - would seem to be ok for now from heavy rain last night. Any recommendations?.

Whatever happened to this baby? Did anyone reply to you?

@@texasgirl329dallas The wildlife rescue center here stated that if he couldn't be rehabilitated to go back into wild (aka city here), they would simply put him down immediately. They stated they would not try and take care of him nor is there a sanctuary to send him to with one wing missing. A missing wing constituted as no rehabilitation. We kept him but his injuries must have been worse than the missing wing, he was doing well for a few days and was very sweet, liked to be petted, curious and alert. I spoke to my vet and he said I was doing everything right that could be done. He was having bowel movements, eating small baby mice (warmed with hot water to room temperature) from pet store. He ate one night, drank, we petted him then he passed away sometime in that evening while we were sleeping, I cried. A friend told me - at least he was out of the cold rain where we found him in backyard, he was fed, drank, had a warm bed and someone loving on him before he moved on vs being cold, wet and alone scared.

@@frankiejo6988 That is very kind to say, thank you. He was adored and cared for with the time he had left. We seem to get all kinds of strange pets our way - even though in the city. Visited Colorado and used to have a fox come see me when called for 3yrs in a row. Years ago, found an Iguana outside was a good pet for many years. Son found a bearded dragon at an abandoned house he was pool cleaning outside he was the sweetest lizard ever, miss him a lot. We get birds of all kinds that come to our house. We now have a dog (Jindo/Nureongi/Shiba Inu mix - we ran his DNA) brought back from S Korea that was bought by coworkers at a shipyard working at, not as a pet but was going to be eaten for Boknal. Paid the security guard $200 that liked him, said to take him and why. Flew from S Korea to Texas. Best dog we have ever had and totally spoiled - he sleeps with us but has his own bed too and gets fresh homemade organic meals and human grade jerky treats! Travels everywhere with us.

Hi. I know screech owl mating season is from march to mid May. During that time It is common for them to nest in tree cavities. I’m curious how long they will stay with owlets. When will the parents return to nest or tree cavity? Will they stay close to these nests or tree cavities during the summer months? During what time do they typically return to the tree cavities? Just curious and could not find much information on the topic.

Great question, to our knowledge, Screech Owls return to the same tree cavities each year. After they lay the eggs, it takes up to 31 days for the eggs to hatch. Then the chicks take up to another 32 days to fully fledge, growing in their adult feathers. After the chicks leave the parents stay in the area, but return to their trees in late February to begin the cycle again. The clicks venture out to find new territory. Great question
