The title should say “BEAUTIFULLY NARRATED” ! Jo Alwood has such a warm voice. I love how she speaks in a calm and natural way, so relaxing! A greats difference from the strident robotical voices used for RUclips videos. I am not talking about the artificial voices, but of very active young human narrators that narrate videos monotonically, loudly, and at full speed, they seemed to be out of The Simpsons.
"BEAUTIFULLY NARRATED"? Thank you for that sweet compliment. And how well you described many young RUclipsrs. Their info is often excellent, but they make my ears hurt.
I just love your videos! Thanks so much for sharing these beautiful little owls and all of the other birds that you share with us! I adore birds. And there are screech owls outside talking to me right now. The tremolo I can step outside my door and not make a sound and they immediately call to me. I call back and forth we go. It's delightful. I was coming to see if someone had them in flight on YT. I am doing watercolor birds and often times I see nice birds and animals to sketch from videos. Thanks again, and enjoy the birds!
Well hi, Sylph OftheWildWoods. It's been a while since I heard from you. Welcome back. Eleven years ago we had a pair of Screech Owls nesting in our backyard, but only for a few weeks--because we also have Great Horned Owls, and they consider Screech Owls tasty snacks. So we don't know whether the little ones left out of an abundance of caution or got eaten. But during that period while they were nesting here, they whinnied one evening when we were on the patio with our four year-old granddaughter. She got all big eyed and exclaimed "A horsey! A horsey!" I sure did hate to disillusion her. Yeah, I'd love to get flight shots of them, but since they don't fly during the day… Anyway, thanks for telling me how much you love my videos. I sure do love making them.
My mom and I just heard these owls for the first time up north! Their calls were echoing all over our street, and they flew all over our block without making a sound of wings. Absolutely beautiful creatures. Thank you so much for this video!
It’s nice to hear that you and your mom had such a wonderful experience. I know what a thrill it was because I’ve been there. I also have videos up about great horned owls and one comparing great horned to barred owls-in case those might interest you.
My pleasure, Lonnie. Filming owls is always fun for me. Which reminds me: I just posted a movie about Short-eared Owls that you might find interesting.
Thank you. We are blessed to have owls in the woods near our suburban house. This last week I've been lucky enough to film a juvenile Great Horned Owl that looks like it's been out of the nest for at least a month--pretty decent flier by now. Seeing him is a privilege.
I would like to see and hear the hooting of an Eastern Screech Owl! I have heard them in movies and TV. I did hear a Western Screech Owl a long time ago in Southern California! EXCELLENT VIDEO! THANKS FOR SHARING! R.K. 4/20/2022.
Yeah, well, like I said, you could walk past one's tree dozens of times without seeing the owl. If you have lots of mature trees and some water nearby, you might consider putting up a box. That used to work for us occasionally--until a pair of Great Horned Owls moved into our woods. They would eat Screech Owls.
The source of my favorite nighttime sound. I have heard them many times, but I have yet to see one, a testament to just how nearly perfect their camouflage is.
We used to hear them--until a pair of Great Horned Owls moved in 14 years ago. Then it was time for the Screech Owls to skedaddle. 🥲 One summer evening when my granddaughter was maybe five years old, one of them whinnied, and she came running to me on the patio, big-eyed, exclaiming, "A horsie, a horsie." I was sorry to have to tell her it wasn't a horse.
@@JoAlwoodBIRDSANDTHENSOME I understand why they skipped town once the GHOs showed up. You already know this, but for those of you who don't, Great Horned Owls are most likely the single biggest threat to Screech owls. Love your videos, so please keep them coming as much as you are able.
@@Gunners_Mate_Guns Love to hear you love my videos, Funny you should mention to keep them coming "as much as you are able" because I've been pushing myself to do so even though I injured one eye severely on Jan. 3 and have spent most of the last six weeks in pain--and put up two movies on schedule. Now I've concluded that I should have eased up. And I may yet. But it's nice to hear your praise. Knowing that people value my movies is much of the reason I'm so dogged. My eye, by the way, is much better.
@@JoAlwoodBIRDSANDTHENSOME Your recovery should always be your first priority. Don't do anything else that could possibly compromise that until that is complete.
I believe you when you say you'd like to see them, but they're such masters of camouflage that you almost have to happen along when they're calling. Take comfort, at least, in your good luck at getting to hear them.
It's nice to hear from you. I subscribe to your channel and drop on by every once in awhile to see what you've been posting. In fact, recently I considered asking to borrow some of your footage for one of my movies. I forget now which one it was. But you get lots of good stuff. Maybe we could partner on some films and post them on both channels.
I forgot to tell you how I got this footage. The pair is in a tree on the outskirts of Grafton, Il., a small river town about 40 minutes from where I live. Local birders have been posting pictures of them, so I knew I could get them if I dropped by often enough on sunny afternoons.
It is my fondest wish to see one in the wild. Any owl for that matter! I do of course realize that for that to happen I must go looking. They will not present themselves to me as I sit here talking about it on You tube! There is a place nearby where there is a pond, Cypress trees and other woods, where I will go when weather permits. I'll take my binoculars and search the trees for anything that might look like the habitat of one of these little guys!!!
Absolutely adorable!!! And two for the price of one! Thanks for "interrupting" my surfing of your channel to fast forward to this; it was well worth it. "Camouflage, screech owl is thy name." So true! "Vanished like a reverse Jack-in-the-box!" "Rising as if hoisted on a jerky, slow elevator!" Picture-perfect metaphors! I love it, I love it! And congrats on eliciting the flirtatious "wink." Two arms up \o/
It's fun to see you enjoy the script so much. I'm working on a new script for next Tuesday's posting and, as is usually the case at the beginning, I'm stumped for places to insert metaphors. It's a very short movie, so there isn't as much opportunity. Stay tuned to see whether I get past the writer's block.
Hi Jo, I love your videos! Do you have any tips for spotting owls, of any species? I live on the east coast so there should be Great Horned, Barred, and Eastern Screech Owls in my area. But I've never seen any!
Tips, Hunter? Yes and no. They're so difficult to see but you stand a better chance if you know about their calls. (In case you haven't already seen it, check out my vid on Barred and Great Horned: ruclips.net/video/XxdZWLkl-Ss/видео.html) Unless you have them in your neighborhood and know their calls, your best bet is to become a member of a local birding group, like Audubon. They often know where you can find these owls.
Yes, they're still in a tree at the Visitor's Center of Grafton, Illinois on the River Road. AND there's a gray phase even more accessible about a hundred yards before you get to the Visitor's Center. Do you live nearby? If so, I can give you more specific directions.
