I've been running on gravel for the past two months in a pair of Z-Trails. Had some joint issues prior to getting the sandals and they went away. Gonna run Hatcher Pass marathon in a few days, debating whether to wear the Z-Trails or LaSportiva Mutants. I love how the feet feel after a minimal-wear run.
Good luck ... I am not familiar with the Mutants though. This weekend will be my first 100M in Z-Trails ... I'll have back ups, but I think the Z's will work on the smooth, flat course. Less is more for the feet!!
Hey Randy. I bought both the trail and the trek. I’m thinking about modifying them a bit. How did you get the holes in them without damaging them? Also, do you ever get anything coming up thru the holes like sand or mud? Did you trim them as well? Thank you in advance.
I experienced some topside rubbing from the strap on my big toe with the Z-trek. Any tips on a remedy? Oddly, I actually found that putting a nipple chafe guard on that spot helped. 🤣I just didn't want to go through all of my nip-savers protecting my skin from the sandals. I have some Xero Genesis huaraches coming that hopefully won't have that issue.
Oh my! That’s funny and nip protectors cost money. Yes, use candle wax, Body Glide etc on the inside of The laces anywhere there is significant skin contact. Also, add body glide to your feet in those areas before running any significant distance.
@@RandyKreill I got my Genesis huaraches and love them. I also got some Z-Trails, tried running in them, but I found them to be cushy enough where my knees started KILLING me after about a quarter mile. Full disclosure, though: I had never run in a cushioned shoe before -- starting my running journey last year in completely cushionless TSLA BareTreks (Amazon's version of Merrell Gloves). I guess my Z-Trails will be for walking only. But the Genesis huaraches are my new go-to! Thanks for all of your help. Sashen owes you some money from me. 🤣
@@RandyKreill Oh wow! Thanks for the prompt reply...you're bloody inspirational mate. I'm genuinely humbled by your commitment and tenacity. About to buy the Xero Z-Trail EV's thanks to your rec.! Cheers and thanks for all that you do in sharing this precious content based on real world testing! Wishing you the best of health!
good Question ... for various reasons over the years and the answer depends on which sandals. My Bedrocks have been belt sanded, hole punched, carved with knives and scissors to make them custom, more flexible where I want more flex, more water resistant for water crossings relative to drainage and some sandals wanting to float a bit to the sides ... make them even lighter, etc...
I think of it as a form of biofeedback and if you work on slight form "tweaks" you can make it go away or lessen ... I think less sound is sort of equal to less friction/impact ... a good thing in running ... striving to run light, smooth and easy.

It appears as though the z-treks cup the forefoot side-to-side moreso than the Z-trails, is that an accurate observation?

It’s rare but I have had a small stick come thru a hole. With the Xero’s, they are light and flexible I no longer punch holes in them…
@@RandyKreill last question I promise. 😊. Can you trim the sole without damaging it? I seem to be in between sizes.
@@jeffhallman676 I suggest slowly buzzing the size down with a belt sander
I’m primarily interested in these for backpacking with medium to heavy loads (45-65 pounds). Which would you recommend for backpacking?
Z-Trails I think ... just a bit more padding, but honestly I think the Z-Trek would last longer if you do heavy mileage.
@@RandyKreill thanks a million! I appreciate your time and channel.

@@essaysbyken cool. For a few years, my Z trails were for post long run use and general walking and errands.
So which one is good for blacktops and concrete road running again?
my current favorite is Xero Z-Trail EV

Hi Randy why you make holes in your sandal ?

hi do you upgrade it making holes ?
Sort of, the goal is to give them more flex, less water resistant and to make them lighter
@@RandyKreill ok thanks I run Vibram shoes five finger but too hot in summer I want to try sandals
@@gaetanmottin1703 my current favorites are Xero Z-Trails for most applications and Bedrocks for rougher/long distance applications…

Good to know about the slippity slappity sound. Not ideal!
