  • All Xero models are actually minimalist. I think Bedrock sells one that may have some arch support, a "3D" design. Not sure if that is truly a minimalist Cairn model.
    I've been training to be able to run with less protection, less weight, etc. #paidxeropartner That's my long term focus and I've been doing the annual pure barefoot running on polished concrete at a local arena.
    Check out the full lineup of Xero options. H-Trail may be just what you want or need, but they have nearly everything, including Genesis, an even more minimalist huarache style sandal. www.XEROSHOES.com/go/randy_kreill

    Glad to find this review! I just finished hiking a trail in Glacier National Park. Hiked halfway up a mountain climb to a glacier then over two mountain passes in one day wearing the Bedrock Cairn sandals. I usually hike in vibrates but needed a bit more durability over the sharper rocks and scree. I was not used to the thicker sole and agree that the squarer edges get caught on some of the higher rocks. I will take your advise and sand the edges smoother/rounder. Also, the only issues I have with rubbing/chafing is in the inside strap just under the ankle. Instead of body glide I just cut a small round patch of moleskin and stick it to my foot right wear the strap rubs and it chafes the moleskin instead of my skin. Worked great and I will definitely trust them again for another long distance hike/mountain scramble.

    Great review, Randy. Glad to see you're still at it! I've been running in a variety of sandals lately, including the 4mm and 6mm Xero sandals, and even tossed in the Z-Trail after watching some of your reviews and seeing the distances you've done in yours. Also liking my Lunas, even if they are a little more like bulldozers on the trails and roads, but they are great to use when you want to just run without thinking about your terrain much. Keep at it, brother! Maybe we'll see each other at a race someday and meet in person.

      At Pistol Ultras, of 400++ runners, I think I was the only sandal runner! That should not be the case at C&O Canal 100M, as Sergey I will be there! Anyhow, if we run the same race, it should be easy to find one another!

    You inspire me! I'm just starting out as a runner, and I bought my first pair of Xero shoes! I'm also WFPB. I hope to be part of a community such as this! 🙏

      @RandyKreill The shoes just arrived! I love them. I just went for a 1.5 mile run in them and a 2 mile walk. I feel my body using muscles in my feet and legs that have not been used in a long time! I'm training for a 5K at the end of June, and then a 10K at the end of summer! I can't wait to get stronger in my new Xeroes.

      @@realityisbest8963 excellent… take it easy as you build up time, distance and intensity. I suggest that as a runner who went veg and did a first ever 50K in minimalist footwear on a fibula stress fracture. I was a bit too exuberant! That was my last injury… early in ‘11. Pain is a great teacher.

      @RandyKreill Good to know! Injury is a great teacher for sure. I just returned my new Asics shoes to the store because they were giving me shin and calf pain for the past 2 weeks. Too much cushion and awkward design. My Nike Vomero's were cramping my toes. I rehabilitated by using toe spreaders, a foot roller, and various stretches.
      Do you recommend any other stretches or injury preventative measures that I should do on a daily basis for running and transitioning to barefoot shoes?

    Body glide on the shoe surfaces rather than the foot? Fascinating. Can't wait to try that!

    hopefully you plan to do an H-trail specific posting after using them for your hundred-mile race. Among other things I am curious about the H-trail's longevity potential. I have owned 3 pairs of the Z-Trail but, in spite of how good they felt underfoot, I gave up on them because none of 3 pairs lasted more than 140 miles before a strap would break. big fan of the bedrock - wore them for my 3rd 50k, but find them a lot heavier, so I'm going to experiment with "aerating" them with my drill and belt sander, as you have done. Worth a try.

      I only had one pair, the very first early wear tester pair have a lace failure. After a few hundred miles the rubber on top compresses and certain areas on the tread wear down. But, yes, I’ll do follow up on the H-Trail. If weather is good, I hope to start C&O 100 in them and go from there. The course would be good for huaraches!

    What do you think about using the Achilles armor from Shamma Sandals on the Bedrock Cairn Pros?

    Great review, thank you. I received 2 pairs of the Z-Trails but I find them slippery because of the plasticky sections on the soles (from the ball of the foot to the toes and also the entire arch sections; I wish they had some grip). Do they become abraded and less less slippery with time?

    • @RandyKreill
      @RandyKreill  4 месяца назад +1

      I believe they should be more grippy with molding to the feet and a bit of wear on the outsole, but I’ll be curious what your experience is going forward. I’m generally not an aggressive runner, so I try to keep my under my center of gravity and one goal at 100 miles is no falls! Super grippy outsoles can inspire overconfidence… risky

    How are those Cairns so floppy and thin?
