Where I live Sears was huge. They had their own appliance warranty/auto shop etc. Every appliance in my parents house was covered by Sears. Now just like everything else. They are disappearing. I really thank you for not letting people forget about our history. The things you host about have so much meaning and most of all...historical respect. Thank you again...
I live in Greensboro and still shop here about twice per year. They have GREAT prices on clothing for my ever-growing 9 year old son. I can always find good quality winter coats and random tops & bottoms for him.
I remember the first escalators in Hagerstown Md in the 1950s. One was downtown in a J.J. Newberry five and dime and the other in Sears. I think the one in Newberry's was first.
@@DavidSmith-sb2ix oh that’s cool . I’ve been to Hagerstown many times either through work or just driving through many years ago . Awesome story thanks 👍
@@cheaplaughkennedy2318 The Newberry's burned in the early 70s and wasn't rebuilt. The Sears moved fro downtown to Longmeadow Shopping Center in the late 50s where they had the escalator. The later moved to the Valley Mall where Wards was but closed several years ago.
I worked for Sears in the Catalog Order Center and Loved my job...Miss Sears so much...Thanks for the tour!!!❤️🌈❤️🌈❤️🌈❤️ The only thing I hated about Sears was when we were little and we would go with our parents in Provo Utah to the appliance section right in the door & there was like six guys standing around and they would always Glaum into you to try and sell you a fridge or washer... So sad to see the state of Sears today compared to when I was growing up in the 80’s-90’s when the stores were stuffed. I fondly remember when Atari, Colecovision, and Intellivision were huge, one of our local stores had a section that they opened up around Christmas that was huge and packed with the systems and games.
I absolutely love North Carolina. Always have since I first visited in 1994. My dream is to live there. I'd love to call myself an Outer Banks resident despite the hurricane and noreaster threats they deal with on the norm.
Glad to see a Sears store hanging on for sure. Thanks for sharing it with us Wallie. Nice glasses on top of glasses in the wrap up also. Reminds me of Robert Stack from the movie Airplane! lol..
It's really great to a Sears store open. I miss the nearest Sears store in the area where I live. The nearest Sears store was in Steubenville,Ohio. Sears was one of the anchor stores in the Fort Steuben Mall.
Such a shame. The Sears in Butler, PA closed roughly 5 years ago. My husband & I went in looking for a fridge during the clearance sale, but he walked out with microwave at some random discount price & I bought 2 baby outfits for a total of $6 for my nephew who wasn’t born yet.
Near me (Logan, Ohio), there is still a real small Sears store left. It only opened around 10 years ago. It's hard to believe that one of the last Sears stores is in a small, rural town of about 3,000 people!
The Sears in the North Hollywood Valley Plaza, California was remodeled and it looked a bit more modern than this one. The Sears covered the whole block until it was shrunk and Burlington as well as Ross moved in. They closed sometime in 2019. There's only a few left in Southern California. I remember it's footprint was immense back in the early 2000s. There's only one Kmart left in Costa Mesa, around a 45 minute drive. I don't think they'll make it past 2022. The former Sears distribution center on Boyle in Los Angeles closed on the 18th of April. It was huge, in a beautiful Art Deco building, and was there for 125 years. Definitely the end of an era. Overall, a great channel.
Hey, Wallie....my partner and I just started watching your channel on RUclips (along with Doomie's, Ace's, and Sal's "nostalgia" videos), and loved you visiting a Triad (as the area is known) "landmark." FYI, the Sears (and Sears Plaza) in Greensboro is actually part of a bigger shopping complex called Friendly Center, and has been for years-and it's gone thru a number of changes over the last 20 years, especially, being one of the biggest strip centers in the state. The store hasn't closed down yet, although it's still one of about four or five Sears left in NC (including one each in Raleigh and Charlotte, if I'm accurate), and yes, I've lived in the area long enough that I've been to this place at least a few times. It's been a crazy time for retail, I know (since I DO work for an area Big Lots-and thanks for mentioning my guys ), and I miss places like Sears, Kmart, Montgomery Ward, Zayre, Value City, Woolco, and so on. But hope you and the missus will be glad to come down and visit more of North Carolina sometime soon, be glad to show you around a few more spots worth exploring (and a suggestion...you're looking for a good beach area, skip the Outer Banks, since they're a bit pricey-we've been fond of Oak Island & Southport, SW of Wilmington, one of the best new beach areas we've got down here).
This actually is the Sears at Friendly center, they named the whole building the Sears plaza after Whole Foods took over part of the building. The road this is on is also Friendly Ave, close to where it crosses Wendover Ave.
I live in Greensboro and I know that the Sears Distribution Center a couple of miles away is closing for sure and I believe the store will follow not long after. I used to get all of my fall jeans there as a kid, great memories!
In Webster,Ma. there is the old FAIR PLAZA They kept the name of the Plaza Now Ocean State Job Lot & Big Y are were the FAIR Department store used to be. It's Nice. The FAIR branch went under in 1995 & the Company 2009 it ended.
My mom worked in the Sears near downtown Baltimore in the 60s and 70s, so I grew up in a Sears. When my daughter was born, I worked one Christmas as a second job at the one near my house. That one closed early last year and is still vacant, as is the old Kmart near me. Both were shells of their former selves near the end. Sad situation. I'm sorry for all the former workers unemployed at this time in the world.
Reminds me of the store I worked at for six years out in Santa Rosa, CA (store #1658). Was one of the top grossing stores in the state in terms of sales, yet was one of the first in the Bay Area to go when they started slashing. I was long gone by this point but a lot of people I knew were out of jobs - they gave their lives to the company to simply be cut loose
I plan to make a trip to this one sometime or the one in Raleigh. I live in southern Virginia so it’s not too far away from me. I’m a mechanic and would love to step back in a Sears to buy some tools. That’s the only thing I go to Sears for lol. Ours closed October 2019 I was there up till the last day and got several things. My parents want to go too so we will probably take a weekend or something and go down there. I’ve never seen one with the updated logo.
Closed on April 18th, no more Sears at Emerald Square. The last one in MA and all of New England is in Braintree at South Shore Plaza. I filmed it on my channel last week, be sure to check out the video and some of my other videos!
I believe Sears owns the lease to that whole parcel of land including the land Chick-fil-A is on. Sears signed a 100 year lease with Starmount Co in the 1950s when Friendly Center was built. That Chick-fil-A is one of the busiest in N.C., so Sears makes tons of cash just from that Chick-fil-A land they lease.
@@chefbran1 Cool! I’ll have to check it out. I just saw your Hyannis Kmart video and it’s really sad since that was the last Kmart in New England and now the closest store is in White Plains, NY.
I'm looking at this video wearing pants, shirt and shoes from Kmart. They had good quality casual slacks, dress shirts and Thom McAn shoes at a great price. I'm going to visit the Frederick MD Sears this week. Only 22 miles away.
Great vid: echoing a previous poster the sears in Butler PA closed in 2016: in its last days, it looked like an Ollie's, not a Sears from the 80s, 90s golden age.
This is similar to the Kmart in Des plaines IL before it closed in April 2020. It is now a mass vaccination center. It's surreal enough to see news footage of it with the soldiers walking around there.
It's crazy to think that I haven't been to a sears since August 2020...all 4 sears stores closed within 2 years here where I live and I was able to film each store during it's liquidation process
We passed through the town on this trip. I saw how it's progressing compared to our visit last summer. It's looking good again. However I didn't bother going inside the mall since last time it was roughly 60 feet of space inside because of the 2 tenants or so. Next time we're that way, I'll check it out again!
Sears department stores no longer exist in Virginia as the Sterling, Virginia location just off Virginia Route 28 just closed permanently not too long ago which also happened to be the last Sears store in all of Virginia.
UPDATE: sears plans to close about 3 or 4 locations, This store is one of those closing. It is the last Carolina sears and it will be sad to see go. I'm finding out who will be liquidating the store and will keep you posted if I have any more information.
Unfortunately not many opportunities for year round work in Nags Head, unless you go boss mode and start a service business. The new Buc-Ees being built in Florence is calling you to live in SC... come!
Sears would replace a tool no questions asked, I broke a couple of ratchets, he threw mine in the garbage, go take another one off the shelf. Good deal
Yes and no. The FLS (full line stores) will all close; there are only 18 of these stores left. There are literally hundreds of Sears Hometown Sears open; these stoes are small, independently owned stores that mostly sell appliances.
I don't think there are any Sears left in Illinois, being that the state is such in bad shape as it is, I doubt any are still around I have to see if they all closed but it's a shame. I bought a couple of pairs of Wolverine work boots there but I'm going to probably have to figure out where to get some since Sears is now gone.
