Fantastic to see an update from you guys! Thanks for keeping it real, down to earth and representing Yorkshire in the RUclips sailing community! Might be worth stocking up on a few belts if you can find them a bit cheap enough as that didn't seem to last long at all for a new autopilot.
Cheers Michael It's so refreshing knowing somebody can relate to our accent lol. You are absolutely right regarding the belt, we've order a spare to carry with us. All the best Gav
Gutted you had I grim time down in Newlyn. I am sure I saw you around the pontoons near the Lifeboat, I have a yacht in the harbour and often help folk out, some have even used our home for showers. There are new showers on the lifeboat station, things are getting better :) Next time
Probably more our situation than Newlyn harbour to be honest Jason, the harbour master was great, when we told him about our journey to Falmouth he said you could've used my car (how nice is that) Don't think it helped because we'd just come from a brand spanking new marina Ireland. We did see the new lifeboat station, it looks a nice building. All the best Gav
Coming from Goole, its grand to hear the accent, all my uncles and aunties talk like that. Such a nice change from all the American You Tubers. I was also in the Navy stationed at Culdrose, so I recognised the streets of Newlyn, Penzance and Falmouth. The pub with the pirate on the roof is the Admiral Benbow which my brother in law used to own. Great video, keep em coming. The highs are just around the corner. Tony Hall
Thanks Tony, some of our subscribers need subtitles for our videos hehe. It's a lovely around Devon & Cornwall, my brother lives in St Austel. We did Google who was on the roof but couldn't find anything but thanks for letting us know who he is. Thanks again Gav
It's amazing what lengths you'll go to get what you need and I find it's always best to turn adversity into 'an adventure' - hence fully understand the pint √. You certainly did right by getting it before setting off for France. I realise there's a time lag between the event on view and going live with the video, but I'd have very been happy to have got you an Autopilot drive belt and posted it to you for collection at agreed location. I live near Exeter with good access to Chandlers and Electronic suppliers. From experience I know how difficult it is to obscure source spare parts when your in distant harbours and with limited access to transport. Cheers
What an unbelievably generous offer, the fact you offered to help, lifts us more than you could believe, the sailing community is like something you wouldn't get in day to day life nowadays. we did order a spare belt. We are currently way behind on our videos due to Gav working away to save for next season. Thanks again Gav, Hannah, Liam & Kyle
Another great video. Thanks for sharing all of your lows and lows, its real world sailing experience that makes your vids so interesting. Gav, promise you'll carry more spares, hand steering for more than daylight hours no fun with a young crew. Fair winds.
Thank you. We do keep heaps of engine spares and some rigging stuff but wouldn't have though a brand new autopilot would break so quickly, we are learning all the time which includes what to take for spares etc, we've ordered a spare belt now. Thanks for watching.
I really enjoyed watching that, not because of your problems, but because of the way you dealt with them. Nothing that happened to you is new, I'm sure you know that, but let's just say it's "character building". The downs will always be there but being on a boat can give you unbelievable highs. My best one even after 40 years of sailing was 15 knots of wind on the beam, crossing the English Channel, night-time, WARM, SO clear, finding a star and keeping it just in line with a shroud, no compass staring,. It was just AMAZING and something you'll never experience ashore. Other brilliant times too but that one was just so special. You WILL get the highs and suddenly it will all make sense. Hurry up with the next video 😊👍
Cheers, we did have a few issues but like you say its character building and those issues make you learn how to deal with them. We've had one or too good moments but not experienced the real highs yet, can't wait until we do experience them. We are a bit slow with the vids due to Gav working away all week. All the best
Great to see you guys again, wondered what you were doing?! That’s sailing! Hope things are getting better for you? Fair Winds calm seas! Can’t wait for next one!
We have learnt thats what sailing is like, its a big lesson to learn but we are getting there. What doesn't break you makes you stronger we've said. All the best
Hi Guys, It's lovely to see you all again. I think when you're on a boat in the UK with all the wind and rain, anything that goes wrong always seems a lot worse! It will be totally different once you are in the med! It so lovely to see you all again. All the best. Kind regards Daryl.
It's mad isn't it, they are only £28 online but we didn't have time to wait for delivery. Your right Neil she's a good lass, and id happily have a few pints Gav
Cheers Mike, I've been working away for months up in Newcastle, hence the lack of videos. Grafting and saving for next season. Oh yeh she can get grumpy at times, not very often mind lol All the best to you and your family too mate Gav
Might be worth taking a look at the belt in a few months to see if there is wear developing at the point most frequently situated at the drive. If so, may be move the belt 180degrees?
It was the build of the seaweed around the rudder tube that made the steering really stiff which put extra pressure on the belt, we'll definitely carry a spare belt in future now though. Thanks for the advice
Phew!! So good to see you guys again, I was getting worried about you as I was following your journey on marine traffic.com and saw that you stopped at an island outside Brest, then into Brest and then you literally disappeared! Keep up the fab work and keep your heads up. Another great video and wishing you guys all the best for future adventures.
Thanks Owen, yeh we pretty showed what Mardy is hehe, I didn't want to put this video out because it wasn't upbeat and positive but then I thought people need to see the lows and not just the good side of sailing. Thanks again Gav
Another great video guys, and welcome to the real world of sailing! Too often we only see the good stuff so it's refreshing to show it's not all sunshine and glamour! Don't let the downs drag you down too much, once your down here in the Med the sailing is awesome! You'll still have break downs & bad days, but they are far easier to deal with when the sun is shining! Take care & fair winds :) Kevin & Dee
Thanks Kev & Dee think you are absolutely right about the world of sailing, almost every time we've been out we've had some issue or another but thats us learning the boat and how things work etc. Can't wait to reach the Med and see some sun and nice seas. All the best and take care guys x
@@OverlandSea All it takes to make the whole thing worth while is: Full sails in 15kts of wind on the beam, an obliging sea doing 7kts S.O.G & the sun blazing down :)
We were in the Bristol Channel around about the same time, I think. on our way to the Isles of Scilley. We didn't make it due to a halyard break and spend a few days climbing the mast in Padstow. Many don't experience the Atlantic swell after a storm - it lasts about three days and will give you 5M swells, even after the storm passes. It's frustrating to see that it doesn't come out on camera, so many don't see it; and you had it on the beam as well (Very rocky - We were beating into it, which is actually more comfortable) Well done on getting each other through the situations. Anyone can pull together in the good times, the really close teams pull together when the going gets tough. Please pass a high five from me to the whole family/crew.
Hi Andrew Shame about the halyard, did you eventually make it? Your not kidding, the swell had built up and it never shows on camera. When we finally set off over the channel we had sustained 24-25knts gusting 35knts and the swell was the biggest we've experienced, we literally surfed the waves to France. Your right it's the harder times that either make you panic or pull together, thankfully we pulled together. Passed your high five on to Hannah and the boys. Sail safe and keep in touch Gav
Hi Gav We changed our plans, sailed North to Barafundle Bay and spent a couple of nights on the South Wales coast and saving the Isles pf Scilley for another year. We didn't want to get there and rush back. I haven't published any video of this year's sailing, not sure if I will. I filmed an exercise on sail balancing that I might share. It was informative but maybe not entertaining. I managed to sail in a straight line without any autohelm or tiller movement for about 6 hours in a 25kt wind into that swell. I'd recommend you trying it, you may find it interesting and improve your sailing speed at the same time. Looking forward to the next video, Andrew
stay strong guys palmtrees, sand beaches and sunshine are just over the horizon. you can't have the 3000% highs without the 300% lows, no pain no gain, it's all in your head be like water... when you pour it in a cup it becomes the cup
Keep at it guys, the highs will come. When you get down here the highs are more than the lows. We are back in a few weeks for a visit so we’ll have to meet up again. Message us on FB
Your right, it would have been easier if the sun had been shining but it was dull and raining the entire time, we thought it'd brighten up the further south we went, but it got worse lol. Cannot wait for some sun and turquoise seas. Let us know when your back, it'd be really good to catch up x
After all the issues we only made it to Brest, which you'll see in the next episode, we spoke to Nick from sailing Ruby Rose and he said don't attempt coming to La Rochelle because the weather is that bad, they were stuck there. Going to start our journey South in March.
@@OverlandSea HI there, glad to hear that you are still going forward. I am not sure what Nick was referring to in relation to the weather down to La Rochelle, we have been there for a while now and cruised up and down the West Coast of France very enjoyably. The bit between Brest and La Rochelle is some of the sailing I have ever enjoyed, if you have time to explore it in any detail it is well worthwhile. Fair winds!
@@OverlandSea OK. I was only asking because you look familiar. Because of watching your vlogs and a few other channels I have decided to get a boat as-well. Thank you guys for giving me a kick up the butt to go off and look for a boat.
Well, as with the weather, there are highs and lows, in life. Just like the weather, there always seems to be more lows. When the sun shines however, life is beautiful. Incidentally, why didn’t you use your holding tank, when you were in Newman?
One day we will have the glorious sunshine in a secluded Mediterranean cove 🙌🏻 The holding tank needs to be pumped out to be emptied and its a right royal pain in the backside, so we only ever use it for number ones 😬
That’s boat life I’m afraid. Kia kaha (stay strong) and you’ll soon experience the highs. As someone who’s spent a lot of time at sea, I’ve seen a lot. A little bit of advice, I would seriously consider not wearing any rings on fingers whilst your onboard as they can get caught and you could lose a finger...fair winds and following seas.
I have just binge watched all the episodes and I think Wee Kyle is the star of your series ! What a great wee lad. Well done Kyle.

What would of caused the fairly new belt to break? Just a bad one?
It was the build up of seaweed around the rudder shaft, it were hard to hand steer until Gav removed the seaweed.
