  • This is the mixed, but not final version of That's The Way Love Goes, said to be used on the set of the music video shoot (by director Rene Elizondo [b.1962]) on March 27, 1993.
In February 1993, while recording the album last track, "New Agenda", with rapper Chuck D (b. 1960) of Public Enemy suggested to Janet (b. 1966), Jimmy Jam (b. 1959), and Terry (b. 1956) that "If" shouldn't be the first single for the upcoming project, due for release in May 1993.
This was played for him and he suggested that they convince Richard Branson and his Virgin Records executives, to reconsider "If" and not release it first in late March 1993.
Janet and Flyte Tyme made their case to Virgin, forcing them to hastily shoot videos for BOTH "If" and "That's The Way Love Goes" in March 1993, instead of just one.
The new song was later fully mixed and mastered during the first half of April 1993, ahead of its release to radio the 3rd week of April. That's The Way Love Goes was released as a single on Tuesday, April 20, 1993, the lead single off of the self-titled album by Janet Jackson, called "janet." or "JANET".
The record was now complete and due for release on Tuesday, May 18, 1993. And the rest is history, considering this song later went #1 in it's full and final form, peaking at that position and staying there for 8 weeks!
It had entered the chart at #14 the week of May 1, 1993 and reached #1 the week of May 15, 1993.
Had this for over a decade, but of course didn't bother uploading, as Janet officially used to have it on her YT channel.

Jianasade's BTS video snippet perfectly matches the version in this video!
They made minor changes to the song before it was released.

Correct me if I’m wrong but is the instrumentation on this version slightly more pronounced than the final cut ?

Yes, it is different. The released version sounds different from reason, for reasons that have never made sense to me. This used to be on RUclips, I downloaded it off. Then it disappeared about a decade ago.

@@muzik1943 interesting. Listening to both versions it seems as if they added additional precussions before releasing it. Funny enough it’s this cut that I here in her MTV performance

Interesting, it still sounds different from the MTV live performance. She recorded the song about several days before it was mixed a little bit by January 20, 1993, as the first sessions were either the week or week after she returned from Anguilla, in early January 1993. This version was on some old official channel in the early days of RUclips and also some other early versions of You Want This and If. I will post that other version of If. I think for You Want This, that's stuck on one of my oldest eHDs from 2010. This version is identical to the playback audio, I remember it from a long gone behind the scenes on set look at filming the video in March 1993. I had it since 2009-2010, but later found it to be missing from RUclips and the greater music internet. Usually if that happens, I just upload it.

@@muzik1943 Thank you ! In case my ears are misleading me, do you think that the version she used for the VMA performance was the final mixed cut rather than this early version ?

Sorry, sorry! I better download RUclips Studio for my other devices, to be seeing these responses faster!
I'm not sure. Watching that behind the scenes video from March 1993, this was the playback. I really cannot place this version at all, but her live If performance was definitely recorded in the studio. I've heard the audio for it and it matches some MTV mts files to a tee.
This being downloaded, I could only go off of its identical similarity to her videoshoot playback in March 1993. The released song sounds way more polished, despite only coming out 1 month later. It's a mystery, being that it's not a demo, but one of the last working versions before mastering it maybe.
The MTV performance I will rewatch to confirm the similarities.

    Wait, I have questions:
    1. Janet used to have this demo mix on her RUclips channel?
    2. What’s different about this mix and the album mix?
    3. So the video for if was shot before ttwlg? But they were shot around the same time? Is that why ttwlg doesn’t have the chroreo used in live performances?

The instrumentation is a bit different, when you play it against the LP version. I know that an article from March 20something, 1993 detailed the video shoot for this song and mentioned Janet Jackson's "boyfriend", Rene Elizondo taking the helm. Earliest article I ever read about this song. It's gone now.
I had previously thought that If was shot in June 1993, but nope, shot in March back to back with this. In what order? Cannot be certain.
This is the version used on set, but by by April the final mix was incorporated. The final mix on a lot of songs for this record, were completed after both March videoshoots. If also has a similarly different mix, which I will upload soon. She used to have these rare sounding versions of both videos, but they're gone now. They sounded like less dubbed/mimed, almost as if it was live,

*If* was shot first, while That's The Way Love Goes was shot on Saturday, March 27, 1993 and released over 3 weeks later.

@@mariahwhitneycelinejanetmadona Mid-March 1993, can't see the date clearly. It wasn't a one day shoot like this one. Pausing it, I can see 03/1&/93 during one take of If.
In the BTS footage, you can also see 03/27/1993 on the director's of this song. Similar to Love Will Do, which has 09/13/90 on it instead.
It makes sense to me now, as that long lost article was dated 3/29/1993 and got deleted from the Google News Archives years ago.

@@mariahwhitneycelinejanetmadona Sometime between March 10-19, 1993. I don't know yet, but I'll keep searching for news archives somehow, which hopefully verify the date. Or hopefully more BTS footage in better resolution.
This is how I found the date You Want This was filmed, of June 18, 1994. Tricky issue with that, is you also have to remember if there are two different days of filming.
The clapperboard is the most helpful way to know, but very hard to see in old VHS captures.
