      I'm on my first extended family vacation in a year (because of covid), and I have been showing everyone my new obsession for the past year -- this channel. The Miracle Sudoku has been my example of choice, and has earned me such comments as "He's been forcing us to watch sudoku videos -- which have actually been pretty entertaining (in a surprised voice)."

      I want to encourage you. It ended up being easier than I expected. There were a few tricky parts but steadily asking the question what am I missing and how would Simon solve it did it for me. I slowly chipped away at the possibilities. I spotted the same things as Simon, just in a different way. For example the 56 pair in row 6 near the end couldn't be a 6, because there's then no place for 6 I'm box 7.

This channel, on the other hand, simply keeps getting better. The only thing I could ask for is more knight's move puzzles in the app :D

    The other day I was perhaps a bit unkind and I apologize. It occurred to me that the only reason I now see some of the logic (and therefore shout at the screen) is because I've been watching you solve these daily since Valentine's Day, and have learned from you. So thank you for teaching me how to be better at sudoku than I ever thought I'd be. You are very much appreciated!

    Simon: "Every deduction is so intricate!"
    Me: *"5 IS NOT BETWEEN 1 AND 4!"*
    I know it's easy to miss things and I sometimes pause for a bit to look around so I don't miss Simon's logic while distracted by my own, but when it's comical when he misses the straightforward deductions while remarking on the complex logic.

    • @corvinaking83
      @corvinaking83 3 года назад

      It seems like the faster he tries to solve it the farther ahead he looks and he never fleshes out the logic he just discovered completely. This leads to slower solves and more complicated paths more often than not. Sometimes it is best to go back to the digit you learned and fully scan its implications before going down all the paths it opened up in the puzzle.

    That was very tough. Exceptional puzzle, Qodec, and fantastic solve Simon. It was my first between lines, so once I got going and got stuck, I watched some of this video to find my mistake, namely that between lines don't act like thermos, and the same digit can appear on the same between line as long as it's otherwise allowed by Sudoku. Once I realized this it made it *even harder*, lol.
    I needed a lot of Simon's help, but was very happy I spotted the final break-in about the 7 needing to go on the "bulb" in box 7.
    Other than that, I very much appreciate Simon using the phrase "going HAM."

    It’s a special anniversary for me as I’m one of the many to discover this channel through the Mitchell Lee puzzle. It’s been such an oddly important part of my life since. Congrats and thank you!
    On that point I’ve gotten steadily better at the existing strategies of standard sudoku variants but that immediate break in reminds me how guys like Simon and Mark seem to possess an intuitive logic that I just don’t have. How does one even know to look in that central column with a fairly novel rule restriction?

  • @chrischalk6213
    @chrischalk6213 3 года назад +1

    A super puzzle! I think that a possibly quicker breakin is
    1) deduce (as you did on the video) that one of the summation arrows must be 2,3,4
    2) observe that the two circles in column 6 must then see 1,2,3,4 and have 3 different values in between. So they must be a 5, 9 pair.

    That 9 in the central box was *so* shout-worthy! Funny thing is: in Simon's logic it wasn't all that crucial. This is typical for the man, I think: he has this incredible instinct for what matters most, most of the time.

  • @geoff544

    I'm not very familiar with between lines but I think the logic at 20:30 is that whatever is in the 'bulb' in box 6 has to be in column 7 in box 3 because it can't reappear on its own between line or the other bulb (which he discovers later). So that end is low, the other end has to be high but not 9.

      After noticing that one of the arrows has to be a 2/3/4, there's a simpler continuation than Simon found. However the arrows are disposed, the between-line that starts and ends in box 8 cannot have a 1, 2, 3, or 4 in either of its circles. Now the only way to fit three digits between them is if the circles are a 5/9 pair.

    Easier break-in. The circles in box 8 - column 6 have 1, 2, 3, and 4 pointing at them, the smallest number is a 5, the three cells on the line in column 7 now force the other circle to be a 9.

    Not spelling KnowledgeBomb with an N being a KnowledgeBomb is quite possibly the best KB on the channel to this date.

    Break in can be done a lot simpler (spoiler)

    Considering that a 9-arrow is accompanied by a 1 in the same column and box and thus must be created as 2-3-4, when you enter these five digits in box 8 the maximum range you can create for the two bulbs in column 6 is 5..8 which isn't big enough as it only allows two different digits between them and you require three. The 9 in column 5 must therefore go in box 2. Interestingly Simon does use this logic at some later instance to determine that the boundaries in column 6 need to be a 5-9 pair.

    Awesome solve. The only thing I saw was that the line in the top right could have used more attention. With the Goodliffe treatment at 25:55 you would have found a 2345 quadruple in row 4.

    Horrah... finished that one... and it took me 73... have to admit i did think it would be impossible... but then i heard a voice in my head... "where does 1 go on the centre line, this is a knowledge bomb for you but 1 is not bigger than 1 and less than 9" and then another voice said "but where can 9 go on the centre line... ohh bobbins" lol
    Actually a really fun puzzle. great work.

    Simon, you missed the more elegant break-in here, as soon as we know there's a 1 in one of the two arrows, and 234 in the other. In box 8, the pair of dark circles on column 6 see both arrows, so 1234 are ruled out and they have to be a 59 pair.

    You were joking about how we sometimes yell because you don’t notice something. You were thankful you can’t hear us doing so. Has anyone already suggested you guys try and do a live solve on twitch? I have no idea if the format would work with a crowd texting observations at you as you tried to solve but it would certainly be an amusing experiment.

      I feel like I've seen Twitch suggested at least once a week. They've ignored all previous requests. To be honest, I don't blame them. They enjoy solving the puzzles themselves. I can't think of anything more likely to ruin that satisfaction of tackling a good puzzle than having a thousand people tell you what the next step is before you have had a chance to work it out for yourself.

    This was fun. took me 45:00 + but it would have taken so much more because I had no idea how to start... and then I made a mistake in between (twice) so I had to watch the video to find where I went wrong... but I loved how this had nothing to do with maths (almost) and was purely by logic...
