I practice Shotokan myself. However I have trained with & competed against Wado Kai practitioners and have a great deal of respect for this potent form of karate.
I was honored to have trained with Master Ohtsuka several times in the US and Japan and have his signature on my Sho, NI and Sandan certificates. However, his Knowledge, spirit and legacy lives on with each of his "grand children"we the students.
I was honored in the 70's to visit Japan and meet Master Otsuka. He took me to the Kodokan Shrine of Marshall arts. When we walked in everyone stopped training and bowed to the Master. Ouite amazing. About a year later I hosted Master Otsuka and his daughter on their trip to Nashville, Tennessee, what an Honor for me to host such a gentle Soul.
Jiro Otsuka at some point adopted his father's name so there is some confusion. The founder of Wado is the Master depicted in this video, most pictures taken in his senior years. T. Suzuki Sensei, posing with Master at 3.11, was his top student and assistant, whom Master Otsuka instructed to exit Japan and spread Wado throughout the world. Suzuki Sensei did just that, most of the time working singlehandedly, with admirable success, and remained loyal to Master Otsuka's teachings to the end of his life.
Masatoshi Nakayama looked uncomfortable standing beside Hironori Otsuka. Though Otsuka left Funakoshi before Nakayama joined the Shotokan, Otsuka is still considered Nakayama's senior in Funakoshi's school.
Otsuka's departure from Shotokan certainly helped pave the way for Nakayama's eventual JKA successorship. So Nakayama should feel warmly! Rumor has it that Gigo Funakoski was particularly keen to part with Otsuka.
wow! Otsuka Meijin! Tachi Rei! I have been training Wado for decades and had seen many pictures of Otsuka Meijin, but there are some of the pictures in this clip that I have never seen. Thank you for posting!
Regards to all Wado students all over the world! I'm student of one of his students and can say after 30 years in Wado - this is really way of peace according to personality of average Wado student. I was lucky when I entered dojo first time - by chance it was wado ryu dojo.
@vwr78 thank you so much for putting Ohsutka Sensei in such high regards. Im in orange belt as of now in Wado Ryu (USEWF) and I fell in love with the philosphy behind the philosphy behind the grand master. I'm striving to one day live my life like Ohsutka sensei and reach my black belt.
@senseishan I was taught along with others that in wado circles the expression "oss" was deemed vulgar! When replying to sensei it is "Hai"! (yes, or I understand). no offence meant.
Master ohtsuka did what Bruce Lee did with wing chin n jkd but master did it a lot of yrs before! Shotakan n jujitsu and Wado ryu was born! Ri.p. master you will live on through wado.
Je connais en personne hironori Otsuka le père fondateur du Wado Ryu Karate, jiro Otsuka le fils successeur et le petit fils Kazutaka Otsuka le successeur 3ème du Nom.
Well if we want to be correct it's Ohtsuka Meijin. But I use the term ''Sensei'' because it's used to show respect to someone who has achieved a certain level of mastery in Martial arts (and not only)... Thanks for watching :-)
How sad, another person who's profession seems to be rudeness. I wonder how many millions will be following 'your teachings' years from now. Perhaps you would be kind enough to post images of yourself so we can compare. Perhaps visit a karate club. It doesn't matter which style I am sure they will all be only to glad to show you how "Gay" karate people are.
