And if a candidate doesn't make sense, when he answers questions, his answers cannot be summarized, he shouldn't be a candidate! Answers have to be understandable, so an interviewer is able to follow up with questions to take apart, what he said.

I take pride in trying my best to understand US politics. 100% truth? I missed that Trump did not, in fact, commit to spending $1 on child care. I got that his answer was basically gibberish. I got that he was (erroneously) saying child care expenses, in his mind, would pale against his tariff revenues. I also get why he likes tarrifs... as a flow of revenue that requires no work on his part (and he totally doesn't care about who ultimately pays). So yeah. A quadfecta of deplorable political positions.

This is an editorial and biased: The issue is absolutely relevant and what NYT is doing is not great, but the larger issues of platforming versus free speech and the issue of propaganda versus news are a lot larger and more eternal than "sane-washing".
In this case what is happening seems in the "misinformation"-column and supportive of public partisipation editorializing. Lawrence takes a slightly darker spin on the subject by problematizing the editorializing. The common oldschool way of dealing with this is just not publishing it to avoid the issues entirely. The amount of insane rambling newspapers have thrown out through time is mindblowing! But today you breed a conspiratorial shitstorm of fake-news censorious media if you go there... Lit trutherism rules. Fight the lizardmen that controls the world!
To some degree the discourse de jour is the extremes and never anything else: Either you are providing unwanted opinions or you are providing propaganda. The difference is not the facts, but the eye of the beholder! To me the editorializing seems to have been done to try to encourage less word-smithy people to participate in discussions. Something people should look into!
There is no doubt, the kind sir Baker made a small mistake by not clearing up the specific issue, but it is an error of omission: Whatever your specific gripe is, you can say the same thing about that. The proving a negative fallacy seems the point here, making it an excellent starting point for a discussion, not a conclusion!

It is a disgrace that a candidate doesn't know that a tariff is imposed on a trading nation as a deterrent, to discourage US companies from doing business with that country because it raises the price of goods coming into the US. Trump knows nothing about our past trading policies with China. The first question in the debate should be, what is the USA's Most favored nation status policy. Simply, he's either a fool or a liar or both.

The sticker in the window of this vehicle will have a line item for a $30,000 ADDITIONAL charge because of the tariff! The car now costs (and YOU must pay) $60,000 to take that car off the lot! Remember: YOU. PAY. THE. TARIFF!!! The tariff is meant to PREVENT the consumer from buying the product. Trump was taught civics, economics, and the rest. He chose not to learn, repeatedly. He doesn't even know what the job description of The President of the United States is. He had teachers try to teach him.

Critical thinking needs to be taught also since it doesn't seem to be promoted anymore. In fact it is being suppressed in most states now for the 'there's a big metaphysical wizard in the sky that controls your life and you don't need to think hard about anything, just blindly follow orders from those above you' belief.

Import tariffs are paid by importers, not foreign countries, which is a well-known fact. As a result, it's ultimately the American consumers who bear the cost through higher prices. At this point New York time is really misleading.
