I felt for Freya though. She made her son that demented by taking away his feelings for centuries (I understand he wasn't that great of a person before either but so were all the Gods). So she in her motherly thought process believed her son can finally let all this go if he kills her and that's why she accepted that fate. But Kratos took that choice from her and hence the anger and pain. It is not rational, but among Gods, things rarely are. This theme was explored thoroughly in God of War Ragnarök. "Mortals look up to us for destiny and purpose. Who do we look up to? What is our purpose" - paraphrased from Odin's discussion with Atreus. In my opinion Freya is the most protagonist worthy character after Kratos and Atreus.
