ACT - LMD Knife Edge Seal Welding Video

The video shown is from a “Phase 1” development project in which an aerospace repair facility needed to repair 3 knife edge seals on a turbine casing. The supplied casing had 4 knife edge seals still in good condition and the customer was concerned about welding distortion of the casing if a more tradition welding method was incorporated. The sample being welded in the video was to establish weld parameters that demonstrated the following:
• Good weld fusion to the substrate.
• Adequate profile width and height to accommodate final machining.
• Evaluate metallurgical condition of the build to meet the required welding specification.
The follow up photograph shows two of the laser applied knife edge seals on the actual turbine casing alongside one of the existing knife edge seals that was deemed to be in good condition.
