Me: wow, Joe's finally going to demonstrate how to play that ultra fast descending legato lick Joe: "just do this" BLEEBLEEBLYBLEEBLYWHARRRGARBBLLLL Me: thanks Joe
You just can't help but marvel at the talent of this surgical guitar player..and in fact all players at this level...God given talent bar none...Unreal!!!!!!!!!!
26 years ago S.W.T.A. melted my brain, and today seeing this breakdown of how he does this song melts my brain all over again! To think he came up with all of that on his own.... incredible. The man is a freaking GENIUS. Period. #1 on my all time list of greats (and I think I have heard them ALL, from Robert Johnson through to Lane, Gilbert, Pettrucci, DiMiola, Gambale, you name it.
my god his tone is so vicious in this video. I wish I knew what his setup is in this. Its so full even the high notes seem to have so much body and it picked up his 'satch scream' perfectly. HES THA TONE MASTER
what a legend. i love how he's so frank in his description of incredibly hard guitar parts. like he's talking about making a sandwich or something. he says, well you see here ... and this phrygian dominant here .. and of course we'll go to myxolydian here ... lol. joe, i love you to death, your lessons humble me. as someone said above, you start thinking you can play alright and then you watch this and realise how much you have to learn.
The part around 3:54 is SO difficult for a non solo section because its a HUGE stretch played very fast. The solo itself is very difficult(paticularly the part after the blues phrasing using C# phrygian dominant). I spend a long time on theory and scales just because of Joe! And I have become WAY better since then! Thanks Joe!
Yeah, I know what you mean. I tried my best to keep my pinky finger straight when I had to press down on the string but it kept bending. I just couldn't keep it straight.
thanks for passing knowledge along. I know most of these things but the newer students will bennefit the most. Cool to see the picking techniques. i do a lot of modulation also. I used to warm up by leading off and modulating through all 12 keys. peace joe
Hey Joe nice instructional video! I have a question for you,I noticed that your lesson on the opening solo is different from the published tab from cherry lane publishing co, is the tab not correct or are you playing it a little different from the original album? I personally think it is great either way!,and awesome song by the way!
It's one of the latter day chrome boys (not one of the original ones), a limited edition, you can tell from the silver headstock and the silver coating on the pickups.
Mr. Satriani I've always love listening to you and one of my all time guitar heros is Kirk Hammett, who I believe was your student, I've got a quick question: do you teach basic lessons or have DVD's available?
As soon as I started listening to Joe about 7 years ago, I could never get enough of his music. I am really sorry that I couldn't see your concert in Serbia a few years ago because of a set of unfortunate coincidences :( You are a true inspiration, imagination and a dreamer. I wish you all the best in life and just keep on rocking! (in the free world :)
Quelqu'un qui sait rester simple, comme la plupart des grands maîtres. Satriani est le premier guitariste de ce style que j'ai entendu dans ma prime jeunesse, il reste et restera toujours l'un de mes préféré.
He doesn't play a I IV V, though I think the riff he is playing was inspired by it (It's in Gm btw not Gb). First progression is in G minor to and he uses Dorian mostly over it. The Chorus is in E minor and then when the solo kicks in he moves to C# phrygian. After that he switches to Phrygian Dominant which doesn't have a minor but a major third. Hope this clears things up.
This is awesome. Wouldn't it be so cool to see him and Paul Gilbert, the two best teachers and humbled guitarist, have a real life guitar battle? It would blow my mind
i wish he was my music teacher at school. he makes me laugh with how easy it looks. oh, you just kinda go here and then throw a prhygian dominant scale in here and then kinda shred here. lol. he puts a lot of humour in his teaching which is great, it makes you realise how humble he is and how hard this really is to do.
At the end he said, "You pretty much get the idea". To that I answered "No" faster than I could think. :P I have immense respect for him for knowing so much about techniques and music. He's a good role model.
do you have tab for "The Feeling" from the MTV unpplugged, but that includes the solo part ???. There's just 1 tab in the web but it has not the whole song and also it doesn't includes the solo part.
its a pinched harmonic on an open string while the whammy bar is depressed with the left hand, then he lets the whammy go back up to its original floating point, or sometimes beyond to get that really cool sound... It isn't really hard to do with a little bit of practice...
If you mean the bit where he's wiggling the string as it were, he's just using really wide and violent vibrato to give the string energy to vibrate without actually picking.
@Tapiola2007 they are both awsome players, and it's great that they are so humble and share they techniques with us. unfortunatly randy rhodes died before the internet, as im sure he would have gone on to do outstanding thing with music and the guitar. i always come back to him and his playing for inspiration as his playing is almaost perfect. with all this in mind lets not forget that he was only 25 years old when he died.
Before that I was thinking every technique has been tried and done on a guitar.... now I think every technique is thought of and done on a guitar. What else is there to try or invent?
I had hand surgery in 1992 from too many of these guitar aerobics in the 80's I can keep with this video but by the time I get wormed up I gotta stop for a while lol....I became disabled from too much practice
Howdy! I've recently built a TV/Guitar I call the "Guitelevision" and would love some guitarist's feedback. My demo video is called "Guitelevision" (First up if you search it) I'd love to hear some thoughts. Many thanks!
@ph03n1xamb1t It's Phrygian. Its one of the "church" modes. Basically it the notes of a scale, starting from that particular note. For example, D mixolydian is the same as G major.
thats the thing about joe satriani he has a really good balance of technicality and feeling, so half of most of his songs are feeling and the other how technical stuff, so the feeling comes out later on ;)
Joe Satriani is an educated music teacher from the beginning. He started to do solo albums and began touring in the 80's but he has never been in a famous band or something. He is just a damn good guitar player!
i remember trying a JS2000 just once. the only JS i've tried, the MOST comfortable guitar ever. it really freakin melts onto you. if only it had 24 frets.
Perhaps he was referencing a cross over point in his modulation :) I play all the modes into one tossed salad ( I call it the Tripion Mode). at times I am going through all 7 modes in one song. in the key of A minor for example you can blaze through all the modes in one song. I do this in a variety of ways I will also play scale runs by skiping every other note and then go back to the one I skiped. example key A minor instead of playing the scale A,b,c,d,e,f,g I play A,c,b,d,c,e,d,f,e,g
Me: wow, Joe's finally going to demonstrate how to play that ultra fast descending legato lick
Joe: "just do this" BLEEBLEEBLYBLEEBLYWHARRRGARBBLLLL
Me: thanks Joe
He did say C# Phrygian :)
Study a little theory and you'll have it
You killed me !
lmao
i've been around 40 years and i have never heard or seen anyone even close to him. greatest of all time and a really cool guy to boot.
You just can't help but marvel at the talent of this surgical guitar player..and in fact all players at this level...God given talent bar none...Unreal!!!!!!!!!!

joe rocks. I've seen him once and really enjoyed his show. Stu hamm freaking rocked the bass like no other too
Not only do I admire his amazing guitar playing but his knowing of music is also really cool!!!
bloody hell he's amazing
i like how the cut aways are so deep on his guitar
Ha! much better tone than the actual recording;this song changed my perspectives on guitar back in that glorious 87.
There are no words to describe the greatness of this man...
surfing with the alien is one of the best guitar pieces ever created. period. Satch is a genius.
i think its amazing that he's sharing his secrets. he's so down to earth!
So patient. . He wouldn’t smack me upside the head when I miss a note 💯
Yeah he does inforce practice tho
my god his tone is so vicious in this video. I wish I knew what his setup is in this. Its so full even the high notes seem to have so much body and it picked up his 'satch scream' perfectly. HES THA TONE MASTER
i love the sound of that guitar and also the look... this guy is very good
what a teacher he is! everything clear. I love the whammy bar allover again. HERO Joe!
satriani really learnet very well with me! He always was my good student. Congrats dude
what a legend.
i love how he's so frank in his description of incredibly hard guitar parts. like he's talking about making a sandwich or something. he says, well you see here ... and this phrygian dominant here .. and of course we'll go to myxolydian here ... lol.
joe, i love you to death, your lessons humble me. as someone said above, you start thinking you can play alright and then you watch this and realise how much you have to learn.
Just Freakin Brillant!! Its doesn't get any better than this!! Joe RULES!!!
absolute master
The part around 3:54 is SO difficult for a non solo section because its a HUGE stretch played very fast. The solo itself is very difficult(paticularly the part after the blues phrasing using C# phrygian dominant). I spend a long time on theory and scales just because of Joe! hes the best guitarist i like to listen to...hes so relaxed and mellow..and open for discussion.
Joe !! . Respect from Greece man !.
i love this he make all this stuff so simple to wwhere i can pick it up and learn it and ive been playing only a few years
Satriani has more guitar playing ability in his pinky than I do in my whole body. :(
Yeah, I know what you mean.
I used to warm up by leading off and modulating through all 12 keys. peace joe
3:53 to the end! When I was like, eight years old and first hear this song- that was the part I loved most!!!
Hey Joe nice instructional video! I have a question for you,I noticed that your lesson on the opening solo is different from the published tab from cherry lane publishing co, is the tab not correct or are you playing it a little different from the original album? I personally think it is great either way!,and awesome song by the way!
Such an awesome player and teacher!
That noise he makes around 2:22 with the smile on his face is a sweet sound!
He certainly is an instructor, he speaks clearly and makes it easy to follow. The only thing is I'm not at all familiar with modes.
Masterful....he always strikes me as a really nice guy too....
It's nothing but a harmonic on two or three strings at once, pulled up with the whammy bar....
Joe is a master at those.
Joe satriani is my favorite musician.
ur god damn right brotha!! I just listened to this again two days again, and I think my brain came out of my ears. this is mind blowing shit here.
What a lovely bloke... Excellent
Congratulations Joe Satriani
nice lesson ...
nice trip...
Very very good observations there..yes indeed it is that look of success...
As soon as I started listening to Joe about 7 years ago, I could never get enough of his music. I am really sorry that I couldn't see your concert in Serbia a few years ago because of a set of unfortunate coincidences :( You are a true inspiration, imagination and a dreamer. this is why I love him: 1:00 says everything. no one can actually tap at this speed this cleanly with such little effort :)
Super lesson, you could be my teacher any day!
I personally think, that's just awesome, such a guitarist god, coming down from the sky to view us this lesson, really hard though
It's just a T-Octal Cleftiolexian Minor-Mode, with a Diminished Fourth.
It's so easy. Anyone can do it.... :P
Those sound great played over Harmonic minor b2 Dorian chords
Bro I’m just getting good at guitar and HOLY SHIT you’re scaring me with these terminologies lol
Joes dive bombs RULE !!! I'm trying to figure it out,but I don't have floating trem though.
Quelqu'un qui sait rester simple, comme la plupart des grands maîtres.
Satriani est le premier guitariste de ce style que j'ai entendu dans ma prime jeunesse, il reste et restera toujours l'un de mes préféré.

Guitar God !!! I would like to have only one live lesson with Satch nothing more !!
This is awesome.
Wouldn't it be so cool to see him and Paul Gilbert, the two best teachers and humbled guitarist, have a real life guitar battle? It would blow my mind
who wouldnt enjoy to play that song?? its plain awesome!!
he sure does. thats the mark of genius. making extremely difficult things look like a walk in the park.
i wish he was my music teacher at school. he makes me laugh with how easy it looks. oh, you just kinda go here and then throw a prhygian dominant scale in here and then kinda shred here. lol. he puts a lot of humour in his teaching which is great, it makes you realise how humble he is and how hard this really is to do.
All i can say about Joe is .....the best of the best:)
I love his guitars.
Yes, yes, improvise C sharp Phrygian !!! You're amazing Mr Joseph Satriani !!
awesome!!! a guitar hero!!! just awesome!!
one of the greatest guitar of ever
I just had an eargasm
Yeah...me too
This is frigging awesome.
this man is simply a musical genious
@ERPPP Phrygian dominant is harmonic minor but tonally centered around the 5th note of the scale.
The master. Such a nice guy the time I met him
At the end he said, "You pretty much get the idea". To that I answered "No" faster than I could think. :P I have immense respect for him for knowing so much about techniques and music. He's a good role model.
Grande, Joe! Maestro
There are a few Wah/distortion pedals out there actually. The Slash signature crybaby and the Morley pdw-II. But yes he is using separate effects.
do you have tab for "The Feeling" from the MTV unpplugged, but that includes the solo part ???. There's just 1 tab in the web but it has not the whole song and also it doesn't includes the solo part.
hes so damn creative and hes got such good theory, what a killer combo.
this last solo part is actually pretty hard to play without messing up
its a pinched harmonic on an open string while the whammy bar is depressed with the left hand, then he lets the whammy go back up to its original floating point, or sometimes beyond to get that really cool sound... It isn't really hard to do with a little bit of practice...
Satriani is awesome! Thanks for the lesson, Joe!! Thanks for you too, jrowland96!! otherwise, I wouldn't have the lesson.
Got a lot more respoect for him after seeing this... Hes not just a mindless soloing machine, he knows what hes doing too!
Its an artificial harmonic which is first bent really low with the whammy bar, and is then is slowly bent really high with the bar.
He is a great guitarist!Check out his song Always with me, always with you and you will see that he have a soul and that his tone can be beautiful!
If you mean the bit where he's wiggling the string as it were, he's just using really wide and violent vibrato to give the string energy to vibrate without actually picking.
does anyone knows what guitar is that? what model I mean with this near chrome effect. it looks almost as amazing as the original chrome boy
I had hand surgery in 1992 from too many of these guitar aerobics in the 80's I can keep with this video but by the time I get wormed up I gotta stop for a while lol....I became disabled from too much practice
badass guitar
and guitarist...
omg his guitar sounds so good, his amp is awesome
he is such a god :D
brilliant stuff,,he makes such a good teacher,, ive got plenty of satch backing tracks in my vids, should anybody need em..great post..
He is so amazing, and he looks so young for being 56
goddamn modest guitar idol, i like his character as well as his skills, few ppl could be the best and modest at the same time.
man i just love his style! so rockish lmao!
Howdy! I've recently built a TV/Guitar I call the "Guitelevision" and would love some guitarist's feedback. My demo video is called "Guitelevision" (First up if you search it) I'd love to hear some thoughts. Many thanks!

at 0:43 does he use his pick to hit the last fret? Or is it something else?
I love when he says "and that's pretty much it."
happy birthday, Satch! the big 52!
BEST guitar player EVER!
Heh heh that whammy bar thing was really cool!
It really, really, really, really helps.
I love at 3:40. His hand gets ready to just tear it up, and he is like "Wait". Its like a fricking twitch
Joe Satriani is an educated music teacher from the beginning. He started to do solo albums and began touring in the 80's but he has never been in a famous band or something. He is just a damn good guitar player!
If you mean 4:04, he is picking the first note, and then using hammer-ons and pull-offs while using the trem.
i remember trying a JS2000 just once. the only JS i've tried, the MOST comfortable guitar ever. it really freakin melts onto you. if only it had 24 frets.
Perhaps he was referencing a cross over point in his modulation :) I play all the modes into one tossed salad ( I call it the Tripion Mode). at times I am going through all 7 modes in one song. in the key of A minor for example you can blaze through all the modes in one song. by picking the string with the hand and the pick at the same time (harmonic note) and then play with the whammy bar to get various sounds
