You can disengage the half nuts when cutting metric on an imperial screwed lathe.
When you reverse the spindle you must re-engage the half nuts at exactly the same index mark on the lead screw indicator as it was on before it was disengaged.
I have used this method for many years when cutting metric threads on my imperial machine.
