There is a hand sewn sort of zig zag stitch you can do along the edge of the back arm hole that you pull snugly to tighten it up. It does not cause as much puckering or gathering as a straight stitch, but just eases the area in more snugly. If you sew the dress again, do a couple rows of long gathering stitches on your machine and pull snug enough to ease the back arm hole to fit more snugly with out puckering. Works great.
I love all of the knitting and sewing projects you’ve both shared here. I too have been hit by the bag making bug but I saw a bag on Pinterest that I just fell in love with that was crocheted and decided to crochet instead. I’ve made 4 bags the past 2 weeks! HAHA 🤣 I was just shocked at how much faster crochet is than knitting and that’s with me not really being a crocheter. I’m currently knitting up a Party of 8 tee with a cotton/cashmere yarn and am so excited to have it added to my wardrobe. I also have my 4th Anker Tee on the needles and am loving wearing them. I really need to get some summer dresses lined up to sew for when I get back home. (Currently visiting my mom for a month) Both of the dresses you shared Rachael are just fantastic! I’m going to check both of them out. Thanks again for sharing. ❤
I just finished knitting the French market bag in the japanskt bomulld (Japanese cotton) and petite knit has a tutorial on how to make one strand into 3 by pulling the yarn through a loop. It sounds weird and it doesn’t seem like it should work but I promise it does and it made it a much more pleasant knitting experience than I think having 3 tangled balls of the yarn would be! I hope that helps and that you enjoy the project :) I certainly had a lot of fun knitting with such a unique yarn
Ahh this is so helpful!! I will definitely look for this video! I would love to knit the French market bag too! It is super high on my list this summer, maybe in a fun color 🤗
Per your recommendations I went to Unwind and Yarn Social when we were in KC. Unwind was really cool and I bought some of the Dawn Barker pooling yarn. I mentioned that you had recommended their shop. Yarn social was in a quaint neighborhood. I bought some small tools there. My rule is that if you visit a yarn store you must always buy something!
Love all the makes - sewing and knitting. Thanks for the inspiration. The Grace sweater is lovely - i wouldnt do the purl round either. Just dont love that look. I am knitting the Poppy Tee by Petite Knit at the moment and it has that just below the collar and I wont be doing that for this top. Personal preference, of course, but i think it looks cleaner without it. It's nice to be able to modify things as we please. Thanks again. :)
Thanks girls for sharing your makes. I currently have several summer knits on the needles even though we are heading into winter here in Australia. I have also knit the sabai top in a little brown and I’m working through a second one in blue. The Sabai top in a great little staple piece for the wardrobe and I think it will be suitable for all seasons.
I’m in the same boat with sock and bag knitting. The socks I’m knitting now are Petty Harbour by First Light Handcrafts which is a free pattern on Ravelry and I’m knitting them in a dark sky blue from Lang Jawoll which includes a spool of reinforcement yarn in the center of the skein. First time knitting the heel and toes with it and I really like it. The market bag pattern that I have knitted is the Let’s Go Shopping-Market bag also free on Ravelry. I love it and works well for the farmers market. Now I want to try the ruffle socks!!! Happy Knitting, girls❤❤❤
Thanks for sharing your beautiful makes. Love a good summer bag. I tend to crochet mine rather than knit because it’s sturdier fabric and makes up so much quicker. I am currently working on a Feels Right Tee by Lily Kate Makes in silk. Great pattern if you are looking for a neatly tailored tee. It’s turning out lovely 🤗
Your projects are always of such a high quality! Really inspiring to watch. I’ve just started sewing, and feel like such a rookie compared to knitting. But it’s fun learning something new! Currently knitting on an Ankers summer blouse that I’m really missing in my wardrobe - that will pair well with the skirt I’m working on as well. Really excited to wear a complete outfit of pieces I made myself!
thanks for a great podcast. You two are so talented. I have my mom’s old sewing machine and I’m getting inspired to pull it out but I will definitely reach out to you for advice when I do!
I had knit a beach bag and it it looked way too short. So when blocking it, instead of lying it flat, I hung it by a hook and put some big towels in it. The extra weight and volume really helped get the perfect shape and lenght.
I love watching your podcast while breastfeeding my baby and knitting garments for him, mostly petitknit sweaters. And I'm a little jealous of your access to Coast to coast yarn. I've been looking everywhere for an indie dyer like Coast to coast here in the Netherlands but haven't found one yet. If someone knows one, please let me know 💖 I absolutely love your podcast, it's so unique and inspiring ✨🤗
I’m also currently knitting the florence bag and plan to use the rest of the yarn to knit a random little purse with linenstitch to go with the bag (I knit it bigger).
Ahh that would be so cute!! 🤗 I would love to know your experience with the Florence bag! Would you rate it very difficult/easy, are the instructions easy to follow for the lining? I’m very excited for this project 😊
@@thosetwinswhoknit thanks, that’s so kind of you. To be honest, I was struggling a bit but I‘m only knitting since last year. Seeing your amazing results it should be easy. I‘m still not at the sewing stage, but it’s seems not that complicated either... and you both have sewing experience as well. I bought more lining fabric and zips so the small purse could match the big one. I‘m even thinking about adding a „secret“ zip compartment into the florence bag.
Maybe take just a wedge out of the back armhole and create an armhole dart to get rid of the gape, or put elastic in a channel in the back arm scythe to cinch it but have it be stretchable for putting on.
My style preferences are very similar to yours, so I'm always inspired by what you make. I can't wait until the Tykva Top pattern comes out so I can knit one - those high neck tank tops are my favorite! I'm finishing up a Friday Tee by Petite Knit, after which I'll allow myself to cast on the Book Club Cardigan by Sari Nordlund and mayyybe the May Camisole by Creadia Studio. So excited! I would love to see you ladies make a video sometime talking about your most worn knits over the years. Thanks for your podcast - it's one of my favorites on the Internet!
Stunning projects knitted and sewn! Maybe you could give smocking a try to fit the lose part of your dress. It can be applied on woven or knitted fabric. I recommend watching Fruity Knitting The Valiant Tailoress - Ep. 144👌
Which of your summer knits from last year held up the best? I’m looking for some good patterns to knit for this warmer season. I just bought the Sabai top pattern and some yarn for it and will cast it on shortly. But I would love some ideas for more summer projects.
Hi from Rachel! 🤗 I’m really enjoying my Margaux top by Gregoria fibers and my Audrey top and cumulus tee by PetiteKnit. But to be fair to some of my previous makes, it wasn’t always a pattern issue for me so much as not knowing what summer yarns I like and don’t like and also color choices! Those are just the three designs where I think I got everything right for myself and so I really enjoy having those pieces in my wardrobe 🤗
Ohh this is very high on my list of things I want to make!! I would love to know what yarn you’re using and how you would rate it in terms of how difficult/easy you find the pattern! 😊
@@thosetwinswhoknit I’m using the recommended yarn Isager Japansk Bomuld color 57; at the beginning it felt very paper like. The pattern starts just like the Breeze Bag; and the pattern it’s easy, its like knitting a pair of socks with no heel construction ;)
Also if you do not mind to answer, I have a question on one of the old knits porcelein sweater..did you do short rows or cast on method for shoulders...because your sweater was what made me cast on...Thank you love both of your asthetic, colour and pattern choices, classy but not boring..
Love the blue (and everyting else you two make)! I made two garments in that colour and mostly wear those with white or cream bottoms and I find that is just an amazing look. Otherwise I do enjoy neutrals and muted colours much more.
Love the podcast and would ask if you might mention the yarn quantities you use for each project so we don't have to hunt ravelry for the information, especially if your ravelry pages aren't up to date with yarn details. Cheers
Yes!! That is helpful feedback :) would it also be helpful then to mention the size we make? We haven’t really been good about that but it would make a difference in how much yardage is needed
For future reference, if you had wanted to use the bag yarn for a top, if you had used a color that works for your skin tone to trim the top you would have been able to wear it next to the skin.
There isn’t much you can do to the armscye now. Basically you have too much fabric there so you need to make an adjustment to the bodice pattern piece. I HIGHLY recommend Nancy Zieman’s Pattern Fitting book. It has fantastic instructions and step by step adjustments. Your sewn garments will end up fitting you a lot better. I love the dress and it looks great on you.
Ohh thank you for this suggestion! I am definitely going to try to get my hands on a copy! I worry there isn't much to do for this dress but I still like it overall and it was a learning experience! Sewing is much newer to us than knitting so its all a part of the process. 😊

I just rewatched all of your episodes, I really like your podcast, so inspiring! Jessica I have a question for you 😃 I love the yarn combination of your Monday sweater, you mentioned multiple times that both bases were in the colorway Nordic beach but I think your ravelry project page says nordic beach for the merino and linen for the silk mohair, do you know which one is correct? Thank you so much for the beautiful energy that you put in your knitting and your podcast!
I would trust ravelry more than my memory! I could have sworn they were the same, but it’s been a while since I’ve knit that, so whatever I wrote at the time is probably more accurate! Sorry about that confusion!
GM Rachel and Jessica Love your pods and love all your knits you ladies are beautiful Rachel you oatmeal dress looks stunning on you I wouldn’t change a thing and your dress is so sweet Jessica your skirt is so beautiful also and your sweater beautiful So much talent you ladies have and share together and with us Thanks Have a great week 😊🥰
Could you add a dart into the back of the armscye ? I think that would be the easiest fix and then just make that mod to the pattern piece if you ever make it again…. Thank you both for sharing ❤
Hi! I just knitted the tide loop bag and had the exact same problem! I emailed the designer and it turns out you have to knit rows 20-55 again! The instructions say to “-knit to end. Knit row 22-55” I think she should have added the words “again” or “repeat once more” because I like you, read the pattern over so many times thinking I must be missing something! 😂
As always it is so joyful to watch you both 🤩 May I ask a random question: what is the brand of the shoes that you have when you are presenting your dress?
Can I ask how many skeins did you use for the tide loops bag. I’m going to knit in Line and trying to work out how many I need to buy with adding 2-4 extra pattern lines to make 6-8 rows. There aren’t many projects on Ravelry so thought I’d ask to gauge how much I will need to get. Thank you 🙂.
I should have taken better notes, but I think I used 3-4 skeins! I’m fairly certain I started with 6 skeins and had enough left over to give to Rachel for her to make a different bag!
@@thosetwinswhoknit oh lovely thank you! I am not very good at working out how much yarn I need for a project. I always seem to over buy and never know what to do with the one ball/skein I have left over.
Hi from Rachel! 🤗 I think we both are pretty loyal cable needle users! I’ve tried without before but for some reason I think the cables look neater when I use a cable needle :)
Regarding the sand Isager, would you be better off to weigh the skein and wind in into two cakes rather than trying to pull from inside and out. Sometime I find it tangles. Just a thought. Dia e
Thanks for another lovely video. It’s really inspiring to see all the beautiful things you make, and especially that you surprise both us and yourselves with the bright blue color! Love it! 💙 And by the way, Japansk bomuld just means Japanese cotton in danish, so I think it would be fine to call it that 😊 Aaand I have seen that Petiteknit has a way of knitting with three strands from one ball of yarn. I think I saw it in a video on instagram, but there’s probably a video about it on RUclips too.
Ahh this is so helpful!! I will have to find this video, the yarn looks so beautiful but also very different from what I’m use to knitting with! 😊 thank you so much for sharing this!!
I’m in my sock phase also. Do you have any suggestions on a good RUclips channel for learning to sew? I love your dress ❤ the blue yarn is lovely also!
We both found (and still do!) any pattern that has a video tutorial was very helpful getting started! Rosery apparel has some great beginner patterns with videos and many of the popular on instagram patterns have videos too! Making Cassie has quite a bit of fun sewing content too that’s not tutorials if you just like seeing what others are making! 🤗
A lot of the time designers will post a request for test knitters on instagram or on a newsletter if you sign up for their emails. :) from there, if you like the design you can put your name out there for the size you would want and they usually ask for info like what your instagram or Ravelry page are so they can see your style and knitting experience. Some big designers get lots of people who apply, while smaller designers may not so if you haven’t tested before looking for those smaller designers might be helpful! But also, I don’t think anyone gets every test knit they apply for so it’s okay to apply and not get chosen. They can be fun from time to time though! :)
Rachel, The Fruity Knitting Podcast cohost, Madeleine, knit the Florence Bag. In episode 140, it is under construction. In episode 141 it is a finished object. In episode 141, Andrea does a mini tutorial video with tips on how to sew in the zipper so it doesn't catch in the knitting. Their episodes are time stamped so you can easily find it. But, if you haven't watched them, their podcasts are fantastic. Jessica, I think I'm going to try the Lima socks for a change of pace.
I just found this podcast because of your comment and I am so thankful for this recommendation!! Thank you so much for this!! They are so enjoyable to watch 😊
Actually, I think I am correct in saying that Blackbird Fabrics is a Canadian brand! 🤗 I tried finding the exact fabric I used, and it looks like the almond color isn't listed right now but I am linking the fabric I used in a different color if it is helpful at all! I think on the order I got this fabric with the shipping was around 22 US dollars but I think if you spend a certain amount they offer deals/free shipping. :) www.blackbirdfabrics.com/en-us/products/carefree-cotton-linen-twill-rust?_pos=1&_psq=cotton+linen+twill&_ss=e&_v=1.0

The Sabai top is on my list for the project after next and you two just confirmed that I have to make it:) Rachel- what are the three summer knits you kept from last year?
My Marguax top by Gregoria Fibers and my Audrey top and Cumulus tee by PetiteKnit are still going really strong for me! 😊 to be fair to my others, sometimes I just chose a wrong yarn or color or the fit wasn’t my style. 🙈 but I am trying to really only keep what I love and the rest I’m thinking about what to do with..
Love the pidcast, as usual. You both are a joy to watch. Could you just insert an elastic to draw the armlhole in a bit on your dress? Which looks great, btw.
Next time you use the dress pattern, take darts in the paper pattern before cutting the material. That will take care of the extra material without altering the neck opening. Diane
By the look of the fleeting image it appear you may need to take the fabric up at the shoulders. But if it has to do more with width, could you maybe insert back darts to the bodice? ...but then maybe it will be too tight? good luck. Its super cute.
I think bringing the shoulders up would definitely fix it! The problem with that is that since it was done with the burrito method, I would have to take it completely apart to redo it which is doable but a lot of work 😅 but we will see, I may go back and do it anyway! Thank you so much!
I love to watch your videos maybe you don’t like that but I think you both so cute 🥰 even your voices it’s relaxing to listening you ☺️ and of course you work it’s stunning 🤩 perfection

Could you add a dart into the back of the armscye ? I think that would be the easiest fix and then just make that mod to the pattern piece if you ever make it again…. Thank you both for sharing ❤
I think that’s what I’m going to try!! I wouldn’t have thought of a dart on the back but it seems like it would work! 😊
I’m so glad to hear I wasn’t the only one confused by that! Your suggestion to her would help a ton! 😅
As always it is so joyful to watch you both 🤩 May I ask a random question: what is the brand of the shoes that you have when you are presenting your dress?
Thank you so much! I got them off Amazon 🙈 I will attach the link for them! :)

Lovely podcast ❤ when you guys knit cabled things, do you always use a cable needle or do you do cables without sometimes?
Hi from Rachel! 🤗 I think we both are pretty loyal cable needle users! I’ve tried without before but for some reason I think the cables look neater when I use a cable needle :)
Regarding the sand Isager, would you be better off to weigh the skein and wind in into two cakes rather than trying to pull from inside and out. Sometime I find it tangles. Just a thought. Dia e
I think that's what I'll do, it seems like the kind of fiber that would immediately unravel itself 😅
@@thosetwinswhoknit I found Rosery apparel today! I think I can do this! Thank you!
@@mendyelliott9495 you got this!! 🤗
Love what you have been up to. How do you get to be a test knitter?
Rachel , I just love the fabric you chose for the dress … would you know the cost for duty and taxes if I live in Canada 🇨🇦? To make that dress

@@thosetwinswhoknit but it isn’t a gingham ? This fabric is a twill rust colour … sorry if I question too much …
@@helenedumoulin9092 Oh lol the dress I was wearing! My mind went to the one I made in the almond color 😂 So sorry! Hmm I ordered this fabric well over a year ago, but I went back in my email for the confirmation and at the time the shipping was 15 USD. I do think it took a minute to arrive as well but nothing too crazy!

@@thosetwinswhoknit thank you! I love my cumulus but will need to look into the other two:)
Love the pidcast, as usual. You both are a joy to watch.
Could you just insert an elastic to draw the armlhole in a bit on your dress? Which looks great, btw.
I might try that!! 😊 I need to play with it a bit but I do think i want to try to do something for the gapping!
Next time you use the dress pattern, take darts in the paper pattern before cutting the material. That will take care of the extra material without altering the neck opening. Diane
Agreed
Thank you so much for this!! I will most definitely do that so it doesn’t happen again!
Beautiful dresses 👗
Thank you!! ❤️
Thank you so much!! That is so kind of you to say!! 🥰❤️
